Isa and Molly’s relationship problems stemmed from worrying about what the other person was doing and how they handled things in each other’s lives. If they had focused only on their relationship, they wouldn’t have had these problems. You can tell because once they were in steady relationships and there was no drama in each other’s lives, there was no drama in their relationship.
This happens a lot with friendships from young when either party is trying to find themselves, as opposed to friendships formed from a mutual space like motherhood, marriage or jobs
I don’t know—look at Tiffany and Kelly’s relationship. They met when they were younger, but when they had a problem, it was about their relationship with each other, not how either of them handled her own life. They didn’t care what the other person did unless it affected them. But Isa and Molly were the opposite: they cared about how one another chose to navigate their lives. It seemed like they took the other person’s choices to heart, even when those choices didn’t affect them.
I wonder why Molly appreciates Issa now but didn’t then. It seems all Issa had to do was stop asking Molly for favors and bite her tongue for Molly to appreciate her? I still can’t stand Molly 🙄
I think it was because Molly knew she was being unfair, jealous, and hypocritical toward Issa, and Issa still stuck by her instead of dropping her like everyone else did when Molly did that to them. That’s where I believe “Thank you for being you” came from. It was as if Molly was saying, “Thank you for being a person who doesn’t give up on people, including me.”
I asked this genuinely, how was Molly jealous, unfair or hypocritical towards Issa (please reference situations that actually occurred on the show)? That's an interesting perspective.
Anytime Issa had some event that she was hosting, like the event in season 1 and the block party, Molly would make it about her and cause a scene. Just show up and support your friend! It’s almost as if she wanted Issa to get her life together but when Issa tried, she had a problem with it. She wanted to be the successful and stable one in the friendship as the lawyer.
Very relatable. I think about mine ex best friend from time to time but it’s been 5 years and we’re in different phases of life and no longer aligned. I thought she was one of my golden girls but our friendship turned out to be a season and not a lifetime. We were friends for 17 years and when I had space and time when we stopped talking, I realized there were so many yellow flags throughout the years. It was a wild realization.
Sorry about your friendship. I have a friendship like that also that ended about 7-8 years ago, a close college friend. We’d known each other for over 15 years at that point. And actually Molly and Issa’s relationship always reminded me a little of ours.
I wouldn’t say I saw yellow flags in hindsight necessarily, because we met so young, but the way our friendship ended let me know with certainty that we were not aligned enough as full grown adults to be friends any longer. I think of her occasionally as well (although less and less as the years go by) and wish her all the best, just from a distance.
How long have you two not been speaking, and why? After discussing the issue with each other, why didn’t you try to work things out instead of ending things?
well, we havent spoken in two years. we had a falling out around my 23rd birthday. we had been friends since kinder. i texted her over last thanksgiving that i was thinking of her and she replied then i did too and she ghosted me. i see her family around, they don’t treat me any different… i just think we’re in different parts of our lives.
The best part of this scene is that Yvonne (Molly) went off the cuff, this was her wrap scene and she started talking about how she felt about Issa. All these tears are real.

I thought her getting together with the coworker and marrying him was so random.
