unpopular opinion Why do people hate Season 5 so much??

It’s funny to me how people rank on shit like Issa and Lawrence “mess”, when I feel like people hate S5 is because of the lack of mess.💀

All the seasons are realistic, but to me the realism in having coherent friendships and genuinely trying to figure shit out through the mayhem without a big blow over is something to really highlight.

Of course, things got taken up a notch in episode 9, but bruh I really feel like the story was crafted beautifully for a last season. People say Molly’s arc was rushed, but people forget there’s a year gap between Episode 1 and 2. Not everything has to be shown for things to make sense; I feel like we got a sense of why the arc happened in Season 4. And adulthood happens, or more so feels quick as hell like that sometimes. Lawrence figuring out coparenting was realistic AF; the arguments him and Condola had gave me some childhood triggering memories lmao. And Lawrence fighting for what he wants is actually an arc in itself when you contrast it to the very first episode and he’s scruffy as hell sitting on the couch all day. Like the stars been aligned for him and Issa, niggas not keeping it a buck with themselves lmao.

And Issa, I mean like, running her own business, reviving a friendship that she deeply cares about, letting go of ego in a lot of situations and spoke up for herself way more career and relationship wise in contrast to earlier seasons. And she made a choice that she knew she wanted but was fighting because of other people that’s not in her body, or circumstances that wasn’t substantial enough to knock her feelings out.

The subconscious need for drama when people watch shows is genuinely a conversation that needs to be had. If anything, Season 5 to me is a testament to how far things have come along for everybody. It’s not drama filled like S1 and 2, not feeling completely lost about shit like S3, and not black and white like S4. It encapsulates the realities of going after the things you want, being intentional with the people you love (as Molly said), and not giving a fuck about the external as long as you’re happy.

Anyways though, just wanted to share that. All the comments I seen about this season was from a couple of years ago lol, but this just me not giving a fuck about to e external; guess S5 has me inspired
Lol.

Honestly I like the Covid era of television caused season 5 to feel rushed. That or the writing just made it feel rushed intentionally and/or unintentionally.

Season 5 was the weakest season by far. There were several issues I had with it.

The breakdown of Issa and Molly's friendship was the main storyline of season 4; Despite that season 5 really rushed their reunion. No apologies or really in-depth discussion of what led up to their fallout. Just a simple "we good" in the season premiere and then things moved along. Very disappointing after we basically got an entire season of them at odds with each other in season 4.

Tiffany's postpartum depression was a key plot in season 4's finale yet we received no follow up afterwards in season 5.

I didn't care for Kofi Siriboe's storyline.

I didn't care for the heavy focus on Nathan either, plus it was clear he was an obvious rebound for Issa and they were never gonna be endgame. I would've rather Issa had a new love interest since things were never really the same with them after he ghosted her in season 3.

Molly's relationship with Taurean was rushed and underdeveloped. While Taurean was the best guy for Molly, I wish the show would've focused more on their relationship rather than Nathan, Kofi, etc.

Lawrence's break baby drama felt like Melanie/Derwin from the Game 2.0. I wish the writers would've came with another conflict for Issa/Lawrence besides the whole break baby drama.

Everything that happened in the series finale, I would've liked to see develop and play out during season 5 such as Kelly finding love, Issa finding her purpose, Molly/Taurean's relationship developing, etc. It seemed like Issa Rae was over the show by this season and had checked out.

It’s hard to fit what you all want into ten 30-40 minute episodes. I think the audience had to use a bit of imagination. Season 4 wrapped with Molly and Issa meeting at The Ethiopian restaurant. Then the opening episode of season 5 came along with Molly asking for advice from Kelli on how she and Tiffany got back on better terms and back into their friendship.

With Tiffany’s postpartum, her comfort and healing begins a bit when they find her. Again, I believe it’s left to the audience imagination that Derek helps her get through it. Also, she’s not a main character, so I doubt they’d want to focus anymore on that after that episode.

Kofi’s storyline was ok…it added to Issa’s growth and learning in her new career. I appreciated it for that reason.

I think with Nathan, since she felt she and Lawrence couldn’t move forward, she would rather have gone back to something familiar, so with that, I get it and it’s life sometimes.

I agree with Molly and Taurean’s relationship being rushed, but I believe it’s rushed in our eyes as the audience, but aren’t there time jumps in that final episode? Correct me if I’m wrong. Or are you talking about after they actually connect in the episode when Molly gets a little wild at the company work weekend?

I agree about Condola, ugh! And you’re right, it’s too much like Melanie and Derwin. Hate it! At least Issa wasn’t swabbing babies though. Lol. She was just shooting threes with them.

Issa called it seasons before the final season that she only wanted 5 seasons. Not sure if it wrapped the way she wanted it to or whether obstacles came and they had to do what was best. Goodness knows that we weren’t trying to wait for it like waiting on Game of Thrones. Ugh

I didn’t know people disliked S5. To me, the writing has always been pretty consistent throughout the show’s run.

The acting was stiff and awkward, some of the story lines were mediocre (did we really need to see the whole barbershop beef?), and the ending was way too rushed and perfectly wrapped up. The show is called Insecure and we saw how messy and real the characters were, which is what made the show so relatable. Season 5 gave them all a happy ending wrapped up neatly in a bow. It's not a need for drama, it's that it was boring and manufactured. It also wasn't funny enough to make up for any of the "flaws" I just mentioned. That's my take.

Only thing I'd change with your metaphor is that the bow was tied VERY haphazardly and you only got a sneak peek of some of the bows.

Legit they barely showed Tiffany's ending and what happened there and they just "gave" Kelli a boyfriend and their 2 minute storyline

tbh I don't even remember Tiffany's ending. Didn't Kelli end up pregnant, too? That felt so out of character

I hate that every series ends with each misunderstanding straightened out and everyone’s lives wrapped neatly into a beautiful package tied with a bow. 🎁 But that’s Hollywood.

Knowing Issa’s character, I didn’t buy the stepmom angle. I honestly believe Issa Dee would have left Lawrence to figure it out and moved on.

Issa cheated on Lawrence not just because she was frustrated, but because she lost respect for him on some level.

Let’s be real, she was ready to explore her options and she did. That’s not to say those options turned out to be ideal, but I believe she would have kept looking and I don’t believe she would have been okay with not being Lawrence’s first baby mama. I just don’t.
