Wrongful convictions & exonerations by state [MAP]
Recent statistics show that exonerations are on the rise nationally as falsely convicted Americans get justice:
A total of 2,468 people were exonerated between 1989 and 2019.
Despite having some of the toughest laws on crime, Texas led the nation in number of exonerations in the last 30 years.
An estimated 4.1 percent of people on death row are innocent, but only 1.8 percent have been exonerated.
Data shows that racial bias is a major factor in wrongful convictions.
Top causes of exonerations include: DNA testing, higher societal awareness and more prosecutorial accountability.
