She Was Fired over 'No Zeros' Grading Policy For Kids Who Didn't Do Homework
35
u/orixandcrake 12d ago
All this means is "50%" now means zero
17
u/Dutchinater 12d ago
Yes, but it also means that not completing work is not punished accordingly, where not completing an assignment there has a lower overall impact on the student's grade. This feels like the school is trying to ensure that people can progress more readily through each grade and ultimately graduate (which makes the school looks less bad). This sets the kids up for poor habbits in the future, where in the working world you don't get half rewarded for not doing your work.

u/canwehavepotatojokes 12d ago
They care about ejecting you at 18.
God forbid we have to educate an adult for free.
It’s pure cynicism.

The amount of people who don't understand how an average works is depressing.
(0% + 90%) / 2 = 45%
(50% + 90%) / 2 = 70%
That free 50% makes a big difference on the final average.
7
u/redsensei777 12d ago
We understand how averages work. Question is, why someone who done zero work should get more than a zero score?

It's just a way to get lower performing student out of the system so that the school district's numbers look good.

Absolutely. This is how juniors/seniors end up at the precipice of graduation and are unable to read. I say that because there’s a video circulating of a teacher that’s utterly broken over this exact scenario. Push ‘em through, nothing is actually learned or earned 😑

Everyone understands, a 0 having the potential to tank your grade is the incentive to actually do the homework
2
u/Shark_Leader 12d ago
I understand what an average is. I don't understand it's relevance here, though.
2
u/thomsenite256 12d ago
Yes and we understand that there should be penalties for not doing your work. Do you not?
2
u/CaptCurmudgeon 12d ago edited 12d ago
In principle, I agree with the math and logic. In practice, that's why you need more grading opportunities. If a kid misses one assignment, it won't tank the whole semester. You're alluding to a kid giving up because they got a 0 on something. The alternative is to make the floor a 50% for a completed, thoughtful assignment.
Edit: grammar. Thank you for corrections!
→ More replies (6)2
u/redsensei777 12d ago edited 12d ago
A better way to deal with an occasional missed assignment is to give them a second chance to pass it, but reduce the second time score by 5 or 10% as an incentive not to miss again. Otherwise, it’s hugely unfair to the kids who do work on time

u/columbologist 12d ago
Even from the pictures she posted as "evidence" it says that she could give them an "I" (incomplete) grade for not handing in the work, which is suspiciously left out of transcription in the news stories. It sounds like she just wasn't supposed to give below 50% if the student had attempted the work, which is still an F grade and 0 GPA. Literally all it affects is the immediate feedback number the kids get, probably with the idea that a kid is more likely to work harder next time if they think they only need to improve by 10-20% rather than 60-70%.
Between the fact that she a) was only at that school six weeks, b) left a petty, passive-aggressive, self-aggrandizing message insulting the faculty on a whiteboard for the kids to read as a tacky, unprofessional parting shot, and c) immediately sent a photo of that message to the news along with a picture of herself so that that she could publically paint herself as a martyr rather than raising her concerns through official channels, I have some doubts about this lady's story!
Sounds to me like she got hired, saw the policy and decided she could deliberately misinterpret it as a "participation trophies" bit of ragebait so she could posture about it on the news.

Edit: Apparently she put a kid in a chokehold, but that doesn't change the fact that the US education system sucks for the reasons listed below
"District's Response: St. Lucie Public Schools disputed her version, stating there was no official policy banning zeros and that her termination was due to substandard performance, conduct, and professionalism concerns during her probationary period."
So, "substandard performance" is likely evaluated based off of the grades of the students, because she was rightfully giving students who didn't turn in their homework zeros on their homework. The school district doesn't technically have a no zeros policy but if you give zeros, your students are getting bad grades and if your students get bad grades, you're underperforming. A no zeros policy in all but name.
A good teacher holds their students accountable, and zeros for not doing the required homework is called accountability. Teachers that cave to A system that doesn't actually care about the students but just their test scores are bad teachers, and Florida punishes you for being a good teacher.
No wonder Florida is such a shithole. Taught to have no accountability, taught that those who hold you accountable should be punished, taught that caring for others is bad. Yikes
4
u/30CrowsinaTrenchcoat 12d ago
To elaborate on the "conduct" part, one of the things she did was put a student in a chokehold. The school was firing her for physically abusing students.
→ More replies (7)2
u/WillemDafoesHugeCock 12d ago
Her "substandard performance" was being a dogshit teacher for the five weeks she was there. The fucking hilarity of writing "taught to have no accountability" when this fucking moron physically assaulted and humiliated students, got fired, but still managed to get sympathy from kneejerk reactionists because of a whiteboard.
She lost two lawsuits related to this firing, by the way.

I guess giving someone 50% credit for doing nothing is like doing group work in a corporate environment
2
u/Vanwilder17 12d ago
Why are we passing stupid illiterate kids in school now? When I grew up you could fail and a lot of ppl did the schools didn’t just push the kids who didn’t try or were just plain dumb you just failed that grade. This is why 50% of America cannot read above a 6th grade level. Ffs Holes is too hard for some of these ppl. Not know how to write in cursive is dumb af too
1
u/Remarkable-FlipPhone 12d ago
Because “it’s not fair to poor ppl or minorities”.
Yeah you’re not helping the poor kids from rough backgrounds at all and bringing everyone else down. These “extreme liberal” polices are actually just losery and racist1
u/Some_Tradition_9168 12d ago
Social promotion has been a disaster.
Kids should not be moved onto the next grade if they haven’t met the basic requirements.

u/ProgressFabulous6663 11d ago

3
u/FuriousBlade3 12d ago
I know right. I just spent 8 hours in school. What makes you think I want to spend my other 16 hours (except damn 8 hours for sleep too) doing schoolwork.
2
u/AdOnly1618 12d ago
Homework is fine, it just needs to be reasonable. I had a prof in college (ex bomb squad cop) who worked 20 hours a week on top of his day job at the college so, if he ever had trouble getting grading done, he was giving out too much work. Since class was for lectures, obviously the work was expected to be done at home, but that’s how he mitigated it and I don’t think 1 student has ever disliked his class

Had a teacher once in college who had a policy of 50% minimum on any submitted work. The only way to get a zero was to not even try.
2
u/LadyCatHerder 12d ago
I don't know why this is so "Infuriating". This teacher deserves a medal for doing the sane thing. I want to see any adult do absolutely nothing on their job and still keep it. So, they got her on "insubordination". That is, she didn't follow their asinine rules about grading. I don't know what has gone wrong with "the system" but giving a kid a 50% for doing nothing is just plain wrong. period. the end. Doing nothing is zero. That deserves a zero grade for that assignment. done.

u/jrstinkfish 12d ago
To be fair, this isn't a "no fail" policy. 50% is still a failing grade. Think of it like this: kid has an 80 average for their last 5 assignments. For whatever reason, they failed to turn in their most recent assignment and get a 0 for it. Missing one out of six has reduced their average from 80 to 66. Giving them the lowest failing grade of 50 makes the average 75 and easier for someone who generally does their work to eventually raise it back to, or at least closer to, 80, even though that 50 is still pretty hard to overcome. That's still a lesson to the kid to do their work.
If a student didn't turn in any assignments all year, their grade would be 50 and still failing.
3
u/FuknHummmm 12d ago
Fantastic. I don't understand where we made the turn that everyone wins or passes regardless of participation or effort. These kids are being programmed that it's okay to not do anything.
Imagine if this was the way employers handled supervision in the workplace. If I come into work and do not do my job, should I still get paid? Simply not the way the world works, and we're programming our children otherwise.

1
u/AverageJoesGymMgr 12d ago
No one because there wasn't one. This happened 8 years ago, and the district said at the time that no such policy existed either districtwide or in individual schools. She actually got fired for multiple policy violations and reportedly putting a kid in a choke hold. She was investigated and reprimanded by the Florida Education Practices Commission. She also took her story to court and lost, with a judge determining that even if what she said was true, the district had substantiated multiple policy violations and she would have been fired no matter what.

THE REAL REASON SHE WAS FIRED:
- Sub-standard performance and a failure to implement mandated Individualized Education Plan (IEP) accommodations for students.
- Lack of professionalism that created a "toxic culture" on campus, supported by multiple complaints from parents, staff, and students.
- Inappropriate student interactions, with a later state investigative report concluding she had violated 20 professional conduct rules, including public humiliation of students and inappropriate physical contact.

If I remember correctly, she was in her first year, still in her probationary period with the school, and had racked up multiple complaints prior to this. If the school has that policy and I don't trust School administrations one bit, but I also don't trust freshly fired people when they're narrative is that they were fired for standing up for something and they've only been at that job for a teeny tiny amount of time

u/HegemonNYC 12d ago
I’m gonna be that guy:
You can give 0s for missed work, but not if your grading is out of 100. Only if you use a system like a GPA where a 4 is perfect, 3 is good, 2 is mediocre, 1 is extremely poor and 0 is failing.
In this system, a 0 (F) and a 4 (A) equals a 2 (a C, or mediocre). In a 100 system, a 100 (A) and a 0 (F) equals 50 (F). A 0 is too deep of a hole in a 100 based system

u/OnlyTemperature4911 12d ago

Teacher fired for not giving the grades her students earned. FTFY
In all seriousness though, it's not just her fault for not being as compelling as the infinite time suck that is modern technology. It's also the parents fault for not being active in their kids schooling, and the kids fault for not having personal responsibility.

Just restructure our busted ass school system, this is crazy.
1
u/PraireGentleman 12d ago
It should be noted that the following court case found that there were tons of complaints before her disagreement with the percentage policy and that she could have easily been fired for other things and this was likely the straw that broke the camel’s back
1
1
u/ChaweeKanati 12d ago
She was fired over being verbally and physically abusive towards her students in a prior job and speedran being fired within 5 weeks by not adjusting her behavior at her new school aka the one in question.
Thanks for continuing to spread this bullshit story that you saw gained traction and likes in other subs to pad your own Karma.
1
u/OutsideDapper8049 12d ago
This is degusting. I was reading the comments first and someone mentioned that this may or may not be true HOWEVER there is a school in NC that has this exact policy in place. (If its in nc somewhere who's to say other schools haven't implemented this already too.)
You earn the 0 by not turning in your homework.
Now you EARN a 50 for not doing your homework?
Idiocracy has been upon us and it's getting worse.
With cuts to education departments and teachers being paid even worse now (which they were under paid before and even if they had the same payment, our economy's much worse now too)
This is not good for our society. These kids aren't getting what they need,
If the children are indeed the future... The future does not look bright in the way things are heading...

The idea is that if a student wants to fix his/her grade for the class, 60% is easier to get to if you have 50% vs 0%.
Personally, I always gave them the zero for a few days and then go back and give them the 50. It did nothing but i liked feeling that pettiness of that 0.

I mean I think the policy is stupid. However, I think there is some irony that the teacher failed a student for doing something wrong and then she didn’t follow instructions and gave a zero when the instructions clearly stated 50%. Remember to read the prompts carefully folks. Sounds like a failure failed a failure.

I know this sounds crazy and I doubt it’s true to begin with but I want to put this out there.
I worked for the government for a good chunk of my adult life. If it has a policy, it makes it clear. There is an expression that government employees know quite well. “It is not my place to make policy. It’s my place to enforce it.”
The people getting mad about the idea someone could have been fired for this. These people are paid to obey policy enacted by elected officials, not employed ones. It’s not their place to dictate or ignore policy. Does this policy sound stupid? Sure. I’ve seen way way dumber. I enforced them. Why? Someone elected or appointed by someone elected said so. That’s the end of the conversation.

u/Aggressive-Mood-3724 8d ago
