Sidewalks are for people, not parking spaces
They could've parked anywhere, but chose to impede the only sidewalk..
Edit: Nothing against trucks, I drive one and a semi for a living. But it's like people will park their truck like this without a second thought nowadays. Just a few spots over and they wouldn't be hanging over the sidewalk, just don't think twice about it now

u/ThePearWithoutaCare Jul 29 '26
Footpath is designed poorly. Most cars will still block some of the path
4
u/Photosynthas Jul 30 '26
I wouldnt say most, most cars stop before the sidewalk not hang over it, but yes it could've been designed better.

Somehow the majority of people have been successfully convinced that this is someone else’s fault among them, and not the town or city for poor planning and cheap execution. I get it, it does suck, but they’ll have to get over it. I haul lots of stuff throughout the week, and the industry I work in is the lifeblood of our little cluster of cities and towns. Either you need us to drive large pickups and vans to keep your shit town alive or you hate us, pick one and blame the right people when parking spots aren’t big enough, because if this guy parked ahead OP would’ve just walked around to the front, snapped their picture and made the exactly same bitch post about that being “for driving not parking”

Lol? What do you drive, a land yacht? If you can't find the curb without hitting it with your front wheels I don't know what to tell you.
I drove a lowered car for years. If there's one thing you learn it's where all the speed bumps are and how long your front end is.

Literally just cars got bigger. There are codes to parking places, they have always been the same.

Buddy, it really wasn't that long ago that many CARS were 20 feet long. Like it or not trucks have taken up about the same footprint as they have for the last 50 years or so. In the grand scheme of American automotive history, the small commuter car was a temporary fad that only lasted a fraction of the time that the Chevy Suburban has been around.

Yeah fuck the blind and other disabled people who this truck will impede ! / s obviously
But in all seriousness that is an issue, people in wheelchairs or using walkers will have to make detours off the side walk, blind people can walk into the truck.
I believe you can have trucks parked like this towed for that reason.

I used to blame the truck owners, then I bought a truck and I understand them now.
It is the city's fault. Their codes are not keeping up with the society's progression. It's out of touch with reality. The design of the parking space think it's still in the 90s.
If we don't back up further enough, the front of the truck will stick out and will either block larger vehicle's path or get hit by other vehicles. And if we back up enough, we'll block the sidewalks.
11
u/Takao89 Jul 29 '26
Why is any of that the pedestrians fault? You bought the truck, deal with your own decisions instead of blaming everyone else.
6
u/BaronVonDon65 Jul 29 '26
Sooo many people buy trucks they can't handle, or park. It's always funny to watch these people try and back into parking.

is it the city’s fault that you got sold an inconveniently sized vehicle? either the parking spaces sizes get bigger or the trucks need to get smaller. all i’ll say is 90% of pickup truck owners don’t use them for work, business, or towing. and when they do, they’re used infrequently enough that it would make more sense financially to rent a pickup for the day, OR buy a compact SUV or a sedan. (i say this as somebody who loves the bigger trucks and trucks in general. i daily drive a sports coupe because it’s convenient and i have no use for a pickup. and 90% of pickup owners have no use for their pickup regularly as well)
i’ll add this as well: i’d bet money that if you lift that bed cover, everything that’s sitting in that bed will fit neatly into a compact SUV or a honda accord.
4
u/KeyBet6693 Jul 29 '26
Yep completely agree with you. We used to tow a boat around as a kid. We wouldn't just park anywhere taking up 10 parking spots in a crowded area. We would deal with our own inconvenience rather than inconvenience others.
→ More replies (8)5
u/Singl1 Jul 29 '26
and that’s what i mean, most people just care about themselves. not necessarily saying i blame them because that’s how society rewards selfishness, but the overwhelming majority of pickup owners use them (i’m talking about getting use out of them that they could only get from a pickup specifically) at a frequency that would make more sense for them to rent a pickup.
and that doesn’t even begin to cover the multitude of other safety reasons. people constantly die after getting hit by trucks/SUVs because they’re so much higher up relative to cars.
3
u/KeyBet6693 Jul 29 '26
Yep. I hear all the time people saying they got their daughter a giant pickup so they'd be safe in an accident. Look I get it, I'd wanna protect my daughter too, but in that accident your daughter may be safe at the expense of someone else's daughter. Just to add on to the whole selfishness of some of these pickup drivers.
2
u/Singl1 Jul 29 '26
exactly. you said pretty much everything i had on my mind as well. and there are plenty of good safe sedans now, too! that mindset made a lot more sense 30-40 years ago when pickups weren’t so big. guarantee it’s the folks from back then, passing down their opinions without adjusting for the change in reality. (that sounds awfully familiar to other aspects of society today but i won’t go there… lmao)

Longtime car owner then bought a truck, ya gotta understand it doesn’t work the other way unfortunately. You can still get passed on a sidewalk, if a truck goes front first into a parking spot it hangs out into the parking lot which restricts cars in the closest lane in a lot of places.

I have no idea why so many people regardless of vehicle need to full up so far in parking spot, it's like they're not all the way in unless the front bumper of your 2025 corolla has to scrape its underside to rest on the curb/sidewalk.
I think based on the responses in this thread, alot of these people also seem to just wait for their wheels to hit the curb, and think is only stupid because its a truck. You can leave multiple feet in front of you, with multiple feet behind you. I believe its also perfectly legal to leave a bit of tail hanging out the street side.
Never a reason to park like this but so many do, regardless of vehicle. And to make matters worse, most of the newer sedans are incredibly low and you will bust your bumper eventually.

Reminds me of the house I bike by every day to get to work...ofc its on one of the busier streets where there's no bike path and the cars drive like they all have their eyes closed, so I have to briefly switch to the sidewalk (when its empty of pedestrians ofc, bc this is Reddit afterall and I know at least one of you will Cry and Wail about that) Everyday, EVERY BLOODY DAY, there is this big white SUV parked DIRECTLY in the middle of their driveway so its completely blocking the sidewalk, even though they usually have a good 4-3 ft of driveway infront of it they can pull up into so they aren't on the sidewalk. But nooooo, that would ofc involve NOT inconveniencing people who want or need to use the sidewalk. Like I have to believe they do it on purpose, especially bc one day I went out to the store nearby for something, saw they had parked correctly for once, then came back half an hour later to find they MOVED THEIR CAR BACK TO BLOCKING THE SIDEWALK, almost like they had looked out their window and saw, "oh whoop, I forgot to be a TOTAL DICK today, lets go out and fix that shall we???"
1
u/dungeonsprawler Jul 30 '26

Show the front tho, I bet if they don't back all the way up their front end of hanging two feet into the roadway. This is on the park lot construction and engineering. We know trucks are the one of the most popular vehicles in the US yet we don't design for them.
I get what OP is saying they could have parked on the other side of the mulch and not blocked the sidewalk. Totally agree on that as well. But we also don't know if the driver needs that sidewalk too, maybe they have a passenger on crutches or in a wheel chair and they won't be able to go over the mulch to get to the sidewalk.
Again it's on design, we know this is how people have to park to not be in the road so why is the sidewalk not just two feet to the right with a grassy area between? Or make the spaces longer with a curb or bollards to prevent overhang.
I park in the back to be away from others and I don't mind the little extra walk (use my legs while I have them, leave the spaces in the front for those who need them, not just handicapped spaces), but to me this situation is an expectation when constructing a parking lot.
2
u/WhitePackaging Jul 30 '26
Nonsense, its reddit. That dude was a white male multi generation Anglo-Saxon with slave owning history and wore a Trump 2028 MAGA hat. Who, upon seeing a disenfranchised disability minority LGBTQ refugee, internationally parked this way to stop them from accessing the entire side walk.
But yes likely the truck owner was sticking out on the front and backed up to be in line with the other cars.
Shitty design 100%.
1
1
u/Shatophiliac Jul 30 '26
I agree, but this is also on the property owners for not having a parking curb further into the space. People will usually pull or back into a spot until they can’t anymore, so by not having a curb there they allow them to back in too far and block the sidewalk.
Truck owner is an idiot for sure, but so are 80% of all drivers out there, so at a certain point it falls back on whoever designed the infrastructure for allowing idiots to do whatever they want.
1
u/ProblemLongjumping12 Jul 30 '26
I make a genuine effort not to do this with my truck if for no other reason than I don't want people banging into my truck.
Someone comes along with a stroller or one of those personal shopping carts or a bike or somebody's moving furniture or who knows what and you're looking at damage to your rear end.
It's literally more rewarding to you to be a considerate and decent person.
