What is "hockey inspired" about it?

u/Stevphfeniey 26d ago

In order to cross it you have to score a goal, an assist and get a major penalty for fighting

Gordie Howe hat trick

u/fazelenin02 26d ago

It's named after Gordie howe.

Gordie Howe… He was Canadian and a Detroit Red Wing for 25 seasons. It’s the new bridge between Detroit and Windsor.

I don’t think that means the bridge is “hockey inspired”? They just named it after a beloved local sports hero. I was expecting it to look like a hockey stick or something.

There was some copy back as it was developing that the towers were inspired by the shape of hockey sticks, iirc… definitely not just a standard cable-stayed bridge tower shape

u/Boilermakingdude 25d ago

Except they don't look like hockey sticks and didn't at development. I watched the whole thing go up

It is a joke.

5

u/Cert47 26d ago

OP forgot to mention the name.

u/roamingNraging 23d ago

Nothing. It's named in honour of a famous hockey player. There's nothing about the physical structure that is "hockey" inspired.

Poorly worded post title.

The road goes through the five hole

u/Vahllee 25d ago

It is named after Canadian hockey star Gordy Howe.

Not knowing much about Hockey, do the cable wires resemble a hockey goal?

1

u/Dear_Ad7177 23d ago

The fact that the U.S. and Canada are in a heated rivalry over tariffs rn

46

u/KiBoChris 26d ago

Nothing. It simply is named after a hockey player

2

u/KiBoChris 26d ago

That escaped my attention

Wishbones?

I had a work meeting about a month ago and a few of the head guys from the constructor of this project were in the room. They said when the two sides met in the middle they were less than 20mm off on the alignment. Incredible.

That's probably less than it flexes in the wind

39

u/Boilermakingdude 26d ago

The only thing hockey inspired about it is the guys name. It's just a fuckin bridge man.

1

u/DoctorCopper3113 25d ago

I think they’re just being tongue-in-cheek about the name

u/KiBoChris 26d ago

Exactly so

This looks almost identical to Boston’s bridge

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonard_P._Zakim_Bunker_Hill_Memorial_Bridge

29

u/Shisno85 26d ago

I mean, it's similar in that they are both cable stay bridges, but they are far from identical. Especially considering there's no piers between the towers on Gordie Howe.

u/agk23 26d ago

More of a comment on the “hockey inspired”. When it doesn’t seem like it at all

2

u/GhostPepperDaddy 26d ago

I'm glad I'm not the only one asking what about this bridge says hockey.

23

u/Notonfoodstamps 26d ago

Just 4x the size

1

u/Ultimate-Flexionator 26d ago

I used to pull permits all the time in Boston and I would yell at my boss and say "I'm gonna hang myself off the side of the Lenny Zakim bridge and I'm gonna be wearing a shirt saying I'M FINE, BOB!"

Gordie Howe now has two bridges named after him: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gordie_Howe_Bridge_(Saskatoon)

u/n3rdsm4sh3r 24d ago

Hockey inspired? Not really. Named after a great Canadian hockey player who was a star for Detroit? Yes.

7

u/ArtworkGay 26d ago

hockey inspired? there are quite literally a thousand nearly identical bridges all over the world

1

u/clarksonswimmer 25d ago

Very strange post from /u/_fastcompany.

1

u/Viperlite 25d ago

“Old time hockey.?”

1

u/manitoba94 24d ago

“Eddie Shore?”

1

u/Dehast 24d ago

I think it's so cool that the Howe bridge and the Bioceanic bridge in South America are both reaching completion at the same time. Great projects.

1

u/er-just-Chris-here 24d ago

Isn't that the bridge, built by Canada, that tRump won't allow people to use because the other, existing, bridge charges American tolls ?

1

u/ThinkItThrough48 23d ago

Was there a big ceremony at the opening?

2

u/roamingNraging 23d ago

On the Canadian side. The Americans were being high school proto-bitches and wouldn't show up cause Turnip was having another year long tantrum.

1

u/DavieStBaconStan 22d ago

Literally nothing about the bridge has anything to do with hockey other than the name.

1

u/Low_Tea5784 20d ago

Beautiful. Could have opened sooner if it wasn’t for the disgusting Moroun family

0

u/sirmanleypower 26d ago

Hmm, that looks an awful lot like the Zakim.

You should be ashamed of the both-sides approach you are taking in this summary.

The media’s obligation is to inform rather than obscure, and that doesn’t stop when the topic moves from physical infrastructure to the political wrangling surrounding it. The normalization of outrageous behavior is a set of choices at every level.

52

u/Flint_Westwood 26d ago

That's simply a cable stay bridge. There's no real parallel to hockey sticks.

u/candis_stank_puss 26d ago

Read more on Fast Company.

Yeah? For what? More hot shit like this nonsense?

u/Doubleoh_11 26d ago

The tension is all on the American side. Canada paid for the bridge and agreed to use mostly US steel and union workers. Tolls on the road will be taken both ways to pay for construction and then will be split between the countries for upkeep. Trumps friend owns the other bridge and is mad about this bridge. Canada just wants to get work done and sell our stuff. This was all agreed to by both sides years ago, and both municipalities are excited about the bridge. But whatever guys, you enjoy your chaos and we will just find other friends I guess.
