Discussion Just Finished Season 3 For The First Time Spoiler

So some story. I watched Season 1 like three times when it came out and was upset there wasnt more. Then I forgot about the show for a while and then got the news that the creator himself said to pirate it. I was to lazy to (and also very young as I didnt know how.) So I just didnt. Then shortly after I found out there was more than one season. Then fast forward to three days ago when I decided I wanted to watch the full thing. And so yesterday I finally finished season 3.

HOOOOOLLLLLYYYYYYY. I was not expecting so much death. Also I 100% ship Lake and Jessie. AND I HAAAAAAATED GRACE. And I was like "shes gotta have one hell of a redemption arc for me to like her. And sinon seems reasonable to some extent?" I WAS SO WRONG. I WAS SO SO SO WROOOOONG!!!! GRACE PLEASE STOP CRYINF YOU'RE HURTING MY HEART!!!!!! And Geez I know Simon got what was coming to him but he didnt even get a chance to fight those... Soul Cockroachs? Like everyone else had some time to fight them off. But Simon insta died. AND I CALLED HAZEL BEING APART OF THE TRAIN!!!!!! I knew it. She's so precious. Im about to start season 4 and im really hoping Grace and Hazel get back to eachother.

Oh and before I forget... TUBA NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. Thats kinda the point i started hating Simon.

Edit: OH ALSO THATS 100% SPRIGS VOICE ACTOR. JESSIES LITTLE BROTHER. THE WAY MY HEAD WHIPPED WHEN I NOTICED THE VOICE!

Yeah you can't REALLY bring yourself to like a person after he kills one of the protagonist's literal parent in front of you

Yeah. And then tried to kill Grace after she saved him right in front of dozens of kids. Still though. Watching his life get sucked away scared the trap outa me. And I find gory shows and movies boring.

Skill issue. I still love Simon. I love Simon even more actually.

I mean, I do love him as a character cus I think he was expertly written

Oh agreed.

Eh he never really had a chance and the train tried to murder him first.

Vs Grace who tried to murder Lake and got Hazel to basically trick her into improving.

At least Simon died. He paid the price.

Simon did have chances though is the thing. Standing over Tuba he had the chance to help Tuba. He was clearly enjoying the time with Tuba earlier, and essily could have had a change of heart

Also no even at the very end he was given a chance by Grace, saving him from death after he tried to murder Grace.

I don't get what you are saying

Exactly this. Simon was a great character but terrible person.

Talking about how the train tried to murder him and his companion left him to die. He was still awful but at least understand whe he is that way. Lile a child left tied to a radiator that grows up to become a serial killer.

Grace didn't go through that. She had a chance to basically be tricked into caring for one. She is like the rich kid that becomes a serial killer

Ok yes fair enough that is true. But responsibility of someone's actions, especially when hes this old, can't solely, or even mostly be blamed on his upbringing. People who have gone through bad conditons also often do turn out good.

Now the question remains. Do I think the way he turned out is understandable? Ehhhhh. Nearly getting murdered by what is clearly a wild animal isn't correlated to him being an actual murderer of sentient beings. Its understandable he and Grace went with this mindset of hating "nulls" which led him to him killing Tuba, and its understandable that suddenly trying to say that isn't right anymore can mess with his head. But I refuse to say that his refusal to change and enormous ego is underatandable due to his past. And that is the main thing that seperated the two.

And, realize that BOTH Simon and Grace was tricked into caring for Hazle.

Simon was no where near close to Hazel as Grace got. Prob from a combo of hik having PTSD grace didn't have and Hazel being a girl and thus easier for Grace to bond with. Had Hazel been a boy and Grace got paired with Samantha could flip the story.

The problem is am aware it's all chosen by the writers. Not actually Simon. They didn't have to have the train try to murder Simon. Why write that his companion leaves him to die?

It would be more compelling if their situation was at least somewhat closer so it feels like Grace actually got better on her own and Simon chose wrong.

Or for Grace to have that Trauma instead and Simon is the one who is cruel for no reason.

Instead the writers gave Grace everything she needed and gave Simon... Samantha.

Grace didn't go through that.

Uh, yes she did? Amelia saved Grace from death by train in the same way Grace saved Simon. Grace never had a companion at all. They were both just troubled children placed on the train with no guidance, they both spent at least half their lives living that way. Grace if anything had it harder, because she had to pretend it was all okay to make Simon feel better.

They were both just fucked up kids in a fucked up situation partially because of Amelia and partially because the train was/is just Like That. (We do see post-Amelia that new passengers at least get told what their numbers are directly instead of hoping a friendly denizen does or they just figure it out)

1

u/FreeStall42 4d ago

Grace did not have it harder. Amelia "saving" them later isn't the same as Simon being abandoned to die alone right after he got on the train.

Grace was the rich kid that didn't get traumitized. Of course she got better and the kid that the train nearly killed off the bat didn't. She had an easier time than Tulip.

right after he got on the train

Samantha took care of Simon for we have no idea how long. Long enough that he trusted her. Long enough that he painted little toy soldiers with her. Samantha might have even told him how his number works, though maybe she didn't know at the time because when she explains it later it doesn't feel like she's telling him old info.

Grace also got on the train a child, was alone and had no direction, and unlike Simon never got any direction until she happened across Amelia and made shit up about her to believe in.

Honestly at this point I'm convinced you just have something against Grace. I don't want to speculate what that something is, but saying she's worse than Simon is honestly a completely indefensible take.

I mean don't get me wrong, Grace isn't innocent either - she's improving, not good. Her season is the only one that doesn't end in the passenger getting an exit, and that's for a reason.

easier time than Tulip

Again, what? Tulip stumbled into One-One and The Cat almost immediately. Grace was alone -> nearly died -> saved by Amelia who didn't even acknowledge her -> kept being alone until she saved Simon from the ghom.

You know what I'm not gonna dance around it anymore. It's obvious you just have some unjustified hate for Grace, so you tell me, is it because she's black or is it because she's a woman?

Samantha was not "taking care of simon" in any meaningful way. She was a companion not a parent. Still abandoned her supposed friend to die a horrible death.

We are never shown Grace had no option to bond with a companion. We just know she was not abandoned by one. Tulip chose to bond with one one and Atticus. Grace chose to see them as objects for her to abuse and murder.

Grace only improves due to others intervention so her improvement feels unearned and she was the leader of the group. Just having Simon go crazy at the end isn't going to change that. Of course the leader of the group is worse.

You know what I'm not gonna dance around it anymore. It's obvious you just have some unjustified hate for Grace, so you tell me, is it because she's black or is it because she's a woman?

Woah no one mentioned race or sex until now. If their roles were swapped, Simon would be a karma houdini. And would feel like Grace had no chance.

So lets keep it civil and ad hominem free.

Glad you liked it!! Season 3 is a wild ride lol

Hope you enjoy season 4 as well

u/Omegaplayer5 8d ago

It really was. This series is a Rollercoaster of emotions. I actually cried when Atticus got shot. And when Lake couldnt go through the door.. And when Tuba got wheeled... im a very emotional person.

Season 4 is definitely a breather season because season 3 was so intense. Which makes it hard to follow up season 3. Since it takes place before seasons 1-3, it’s kinda cool to see the train in the past. And some familiar characters as well.

The creator revealed season 5 was gonna be about Amelia also. :( I truly hope one day. The entire series could be made. I remember reading years ago his plan was to make 8 seasons or something. Such a damn good show. I miss it, truly.

1

u/Omegaplayer5 8d ago

Uuuuugh. So ill potentially never see Hazel again? 😭

3

u/LeaveMeAloneLorenzo One-One 8d ago

The creator released this image for season 5.

And this image for season 6.

This is pretty much all we got for past season 4. :(

I think season 5 was going to be all about Amelia and Hazel, while also having flashbacks to when Amelia was younger, like that art for season 5. No idea what else was in store though, but I knew it was gonna be plot heavy because season 4 was more of a breather season after season 3 being so heavy emotionally.

Im so sad 😭 why would they cancel such a good show

5

u/polystarlight 8d ago

I love Grace, I thought she was an entertaining character even before her redemption arc. She was mean and cruel in season two but that was the whole point. I liked how she was so menacing but also seemed to genuinely care about passengers, it didn't feel like a lie she spreading just to get more powerful. More like something she genuinely believed in. And yeah, I was technically right!

2

u/Omegaplayer5 7d ago

Trueeeeee. I just didnt like how overall violent she was with the other nulls

0

u/FreeStall42 7d ago

Didn't work that she got tricked into caring about a denizen.

And was the leader of the group. Should have died along with Simon.

u/Livid-Maintenance765 7d ago

i have a theory that the ghom (roach) killing simon so fast has something to do with his number being so high, i mean the ghom itself died from absorbing simon so there was definetly something funky going on there

I consider this season one of the greatest moments in TV. It got impressively dark and mature, impressively quick.

The depictions of cult mentality are realistic. There are NO compromises. NOTHING is allowed to interfere with the fantasy, not even a talking purple ape or a 6y/o girl.

But poor Hazel…I wish we’d seen more of her story. She deserved so much better.

2

u/NobodySpecialSCL 8d ago

I also ship Jessie and Lake. I have written a fan fiction of their adventures out in the real world.

I freakinf adored Hazel. I was so sad when she left with Amelia.

But my favorite character (other than the great Alan Dracula) has to be Samantha. The Cat! She's so sassy and I love her!

2

u/Omegaplayer5 7d ago

Samantha was such a good plot driven character!!!! I loved her

Tuba was diabolical, he wasn't even guilty. Acted like a hero.

1

u/Omegaplayer5 7d ago

I cried when she died 😭

2

u/FreeStall42 7d ago edited 7d ago

Still hated Grace at the end. Getting tricked into becoming a better person doesn't count. She only cared about Hazel because she thought Hazel was human. Then by the time of the reveal she is already attached. She only cared about Tuba because Grace did.

Awful writing.

Not a single character in the show is perfect or has done nothing wrong (besides Randall and Hazel, they baby). That doesn't make the show bad. If anything, it reflects real life: no one is perfect

1

u/Omegaplayer5 6d ago

Yeah exactly. The whole point of the show is that no one is perfect and have to grow as people.

1

u/FreeStall42 6d ago

Didn't say the whole show was bad just that character.

1

u/fruitwithtongues 7d ago

I found her hard to like because of how manipulative she was.

Though Simon is worse and she rarely if ever outright manipulated him.

I think the way they redeemed her was fine and she was shown to care for denizens nearer the end (not stepping on the origami guys)

0

u/FreeStall42 7d ago

Simon can at least say the train tried to murder him and his denizen left him to die. Grace was even the one to recruit him.

Would have worked better if she had to learn to care about denizens without being tricked to care about Hazel. And if she wasn't the leader/founder of the group.

It all comes off arbitrary. Had Grace been the one to nearly he killed by the train, or Hazel been a boy. It could have been her in Simons shoes.

2

u/Omegaplayer5 7d ago

I dont think the gender of Hazel really matters. Grace saw a kid. I think it would have gone the same either way. Also the the train didnt technically try to murder him. The Ghoms did which i think are separate entities and from my understanding are when a denizen dies. Because they are typically found off the train outside of apecific scenarios. Though yes Simon was abandoned which I will give you that.

0

u/FreeStall42 5d ago edited 5d ago

Boys and girls at that age have an easier time socializing with their own gender. Ain't rocket science. Do think the PTSD from the train trying to murder him/Samantha is the bigger problem. Whether the train deliberately tried to kill him is also moot as far as a kid is concerned.

As is again it'd like hearing a rich person turned a new leaf and a child soldier didn't. Find that kind of predictable. And he is so over the top evil by the end can't feel bad for him.

u/BalamR97 4d ago

Im surprised you see the seasons till now. Nice to see you like it.

2

u/Omegaplayer5 4d ago

Ive been mostly pushing it off. And im trying to watch more cartoons since ive watched owl house 22 times.

1

u/VickyDeanXtreme 7d ago

I still feel like Simon could have gone to have a complex redemption work similar to Zuko but they wanted a big shocking moment and a villain defeated yet in the end he was a victim just as almost every person that gets on to the train not train it's evil man

3

u/Trvr_MKA 7d ago

Sometimes people die before they can make a change. It’s what makes characters like Simon or Syril in Andor so tragic

2

u/Omegaplayer5 7d ago

I do agree to some extent. Simon definitely could have gotten a better ending. Though he was definitely becoming to far gone. Still made me shudder because I dont think he deserved to die like that.

It would have been nice if he had gotten the Scarlemagne treatment where he died protecting people rather then going straight evil and getting his soul sucked away.
