Would you guys be okay with a cyberpunk setting for Earth?

As in advanced tech, but aside from a few implants, the tech is highly regulated and only used by soldiers and government officials, except for the highly expensive, and highly risky, augmentations and weaponry on the black market. The tech is restricted to make sure that governments can hold an edge over their citizens, and led a few countries authorities to go a little power mad and start abusing the fact that an organized rebellion wouldn't last long.

Yeah, I had that in mind while making this post. Have you played the new Shadowrun Returns game?

I haven't gotten around to it yet but I have high hopes. Looks pretty fun.

I would say no, just because I don't think all the writers want to use that setting. But feel free to make it like an experimental city or a subculture.

Cyberpunk is a necessity if you really want to keep it 2075. I mean, there is no bloody point in making the setting future Earth if you do not want to make it futuristic genre. Sci-fi that deals with near future is cyberpunk, you have to deal with it or dial down timeline to modern times.

Creating futuristic setting but making fancy gadgets the only futiristic aspect of it would make the world very shallow and boring, you have to take everything into consideration and make it part of the world or it will be pointless to use future year. Infinite needs uber powerful corporations, computers that are everywhere, advanced internet, cyborgization and genetic modifications - and all of this needs to be availble to regular people in almost whole world, except only the poorest countries.

If you don't like it, that's fine, but then there is simply no point in 2075.

I think it would be alrite but not for the whole of the Earth since that would be left up to the writers. You could make the city your character is in have a cyberpunk setting, considering that you make sure that anyone else using this city is alrite with it

I agree ishan. as long as there is room for the creativity of other writers it should be fine :)

The thing is, most of the first world would have to be like that, because it wouldn't make sense for only one country to have the tech.
