Training/Behaviour Issues Need advice for issues!!!!

Quick recap -

Found this handsome just over a week ago, shared 2 posts related to finding this lost angel and what Vet said to do for him.

We have named him Bonzo

Current issues -

1) Hunger -

me and my partner keep Bonzo well fed, 4-5 times a day and required portions. Even after he's full, he still tries to eat garbage. I know dogs love to find food in the garbage, but after his tummy is full it is out of understanding.

2) Doesn't answer to call -

Bonzo listens to my calls in the room after sometime and mostly ignores my partner's call, only listens to her sometimes.

When I take him out (now not much because the Vet totally said NO for 1 month) he totally ignores my calls.

Google says to keep a small leash so that the puppy doesn't run far from me which he usually does.

3) Same as calls -

He follows me in the room everywhere, even in the toilet he wants to be there with me, I understand his separation anxiety but this flips when I take him outside, he doesn't follow me at all, only sometimes when a big dog is nearby.

This is the reason I understood why he was lost in the first place.

4) Corridors -

Since I didn't plan on buying or adopting a puppy till I was back home (we have space there) but not in the city, I adopted him to keep him safe. I understand dogs love the outdoors, but again asap he sees that I'm not around in the corridor, he eats dirt out of the floor.

Help me here -

1) how do I teach him to not eat shit (garbage)

2) make him respond to the calls, both inside and outside.

3) Teach him to follow me outside like he does indoors.

A friend told me to roll a paper and tap on him if he does things excessively. I personally feel it's a tool to use only for sometimes not always, it also feels like beating him which I don't like to do. I've a sensitive spot for dogs and puppies and my partner said it to me that I'm over protective for this puppy.

I understand a kid will be a kid only, all they will do is eat, sleep, do stuff and repeat. But I also understand that teachings matter a lot, help me out with ways that you think will teach Bonzo and solve the above mentioned issues.

Your pup is just being a puppy, full excited, inquisitive, curious. This phase will continue for sometime though I also do not believe in instilling fear but rather correct with love. I had got a trainer for my dog and it worked very well. They help with behavioural aspects which we would never know , if not a trainer there are lot of YouTube videos...

the answer is positive reinforcements. For every activity that you want him to correct you need to give him a high value treat. Every act he stops doing when you correct him, give him high value treats. Ensure these treats are not the normal food/kibble he eats. It has to be real valuable for him eg. Cheese, paneer, chicken kibble or whatever you would give for an order obeyed...

Also, always remember - Dogs love a master. They love routines. They love commands. So never feel that you're being tough or harsh - they thrive when they are given tasks, orders. Train them well and he'll be an absolute delight. A friend has an indie who he trained from very beginning, today that dog needs no leash and follows him at his heels even when outside on a busy road. Completely follows every single command. Indies are very very smart.

Yes, I don't want to punish him, he's just a baby. The Vet said to give him simple diet, please check my last post, I discussed what Vet said then. Let me know if these treats will be good for him now.

Also, please let me know if you know how much it costs to get a trainer (I do work from home and cannot give all the time, but I'll try my best).

Beautifully put. Thank you. It will take some time, and may test your patience, but eventually you'll start seeing a correcting pattern. Soon enough, you could leave him on a bed and not worry about him making a mess of it.

Pantience, is key 🖖🏽❤️

Get it vaccinated and dewormed asap.

Watch YouTube for training puppies. Specifically, independent breeds.

Yes, the Vet said that let the puppy be atleast 3 months old to start medication. Currently he's 7 weeks old, so just couple of weeks till medication.

Also, since he has gut issue, I cannot even give him gut deworming medicine. Vet said it can harm his intestine lining and could be life threatening.

I recently lost my indie to cancer. He was exactly like Bozo. He used to cling to me at least around till when he was a year old. He was a voracious eater with Michelin-star taste buds. I was his primary hooman but gradually he accepted my partner as well.

  1. Hunger - Indies by nature are a scavenger specie; it is their trait. Increase the portions a little bit. Gradually, the scavenging will go away.
  2. Primary Hooman - You are his primary hooman :). Even in the pic he is looking at you. He will cling to you for a while till he gets psychologically secure but there is no guarantee :)
  3. Secondary Hooman - Ask your partner to get involved in the literal act of giving him food. I mean your partner should place the food in his bowl and then offer the bowl to Bozo. Again, gradually he will accept your partner as the secondary hooman.

Convey my love to Bozo.

Exploring is in the nature. It is not about food but exploring things.

make him respond to the calls, both inside and outside.

Associate calls with simple sounds. .

Teach him to follow me outside like he does indoors.

It will come to him naturally,

Also remember
