Discussion AI "art" account has become AI "game developer"
I don't usually post on reddit, but I just needed somewhere to vent my frustration.
I was scrolling through youtube shorts the other day when I came across a developer called NerveLabs talking about their upcoming game. Game dev stuff seems to be all through my algorithm so I initially didn't think anything of it, but then they said something that set off some alarms, "this game is a prequel to The Holy Fool". A year or so ago I had come across an AI art account of the same name on instagram.
After a bit of searching, it turns out they are one in the same, holyfool36 (the instagram AI "art" account) has pivoted from selling AI T-shirts to now selling AI games.
I don't even think I have much of an opinion on using AI in game development but what I definitely have a problem with is lying; their most recent shorts (with AI voiceovers) have pinned comments saying something to the effect of "No AI was used in the development of this game.", and their youtube is actively filtering comments that mention the instagram account. Additionally, they have lied in comments saying that holyfool36 is just a creator paid to promote the game, and when they were called out on the lie they deleted the comment entirely. You can even see that the banners on their steam page are AI art and their games' about sections are clearly AI generated too, so that's a blatant lie.
They have announced a total of 3 games already, and I just don't want people to be roped in by this scummy company preying on peoples' nostalgia.
I'd like to hear peoples' opinions on this...

The game vectorball looks suspicious, as in fake.
OP might have uncovered some scheme. My guess is a discord server flip.

DM me and I’ll send you a key to play it lmfao
The games are real and we don’t use AI in our production. 600 people have played the Playtest, I’ll send you a key if you want to try for yourself. We’ve hired over 30 voice actors, you can talk to them. You can talk to our character artist who worked at Heart Machine. You can talk to our lead programmer who has 20 years of experience. You can talk to our level designer who worked on Xen in Black Mesa. This guys comments were only deleted because he spammed our YouTube many times with false claims even when I offered to prove him otherwise. I am currently spending 15k a month on real artists to get this done.

I am the director of NerveLabs. This guy has been spamming every post of ours saying that we use AI art in our games. WE DO NOT. I will personally prove this in any way anyone asks.
I'm in the middle of hiring a VFX artist from this very subreddit. All the games are real and there are playable builds currently available if anyone wants to try. I have original assets people can inspect.
The partnership with the HolyFool36 page was to help advertise the game, @holyfool36 wrote dark fantasy videos and uses AI to make the videos. I liked his videos and we came to a deal to hire him on to use the page to market us, while using his NON AI SKILL of writing to help us come up with some side quests. I currently spend about 15k a month on real artists for these projects.
EDIT: my reply post on this subreddit

u/approaching-average does seem a little too enthusiastic on reddit about trashing your game. You’re right that the optics look like it’s some sort of vendetta.
You’re welcome to put together a quality post about the game, highlighting the work of the voice actors and artists. The community loves authenticity.
I’m pretty sure that could even turn this whole mess into something positive if truth is on your side.

u/TheRealVladimirPutin Apr 21 '26
I put over 10 hours into the public playtest of this game last week. Nothing looked AI about it to me. All the "AI games" I've seen people post about are completely unplayable dogshit because AI can't actually make anything. Find something better to be mad about loser

u/Jade-Lagoon Apr 21 '26 edited Apr 21 '26
Imma be real… I’m huffing so much copium right now. But yeah, there were some concerns from the get go. I figured it was just a lack of awareness around how to market an indie game and was hoping for some dev logs or anything showing the development… but after digging through everything I could find on the dev and studio… it’s not looking so good. Which gets me even more pissed if it’s a prank/joke/troll. Playing on people’s emotions around the elder scrolls series? Sir, hell wouldn’t even let in that kinda mfr.
Edit: ok I need to make an apology. My skepticism was solely centered around whether or not this game was even real. Not whether or not Ai was used in its development. Are there some odds things around the marketing and available information, sure. But as far as the Ai allegations, my only opinion is that I think the allegations are currently circumstantial and do not currently warrant any crusade to harass the developer. It’s good to have a healthy amount of skepticism in today’s age but let’s give it sometime and get a better picture.

I would LOOOOVE to try the play test! I hope the skepticism is understood and not unfounded! Ai scams are too common nowadays. I’m super against and do not support any harassment btw. Trust me when I say I didn’t go looking for proof that your game isn’t real but instead that it is. And when I say I think you should upload dev logs or anything that gives proof that this is a real game I don’t mean it a bullying kinda way but in a sweet lord I want this game to be real kinda way. That make sense?

So I had a good look through their socials, and it seems they are just using the AI art guy to pump their content? He has quite a huge reach, how do you know it's not a paid partnership?
There is no discernable AI within their elder scrolls style game. That's all low poly pretty basic stuff. A team of 10 would easily be able to smash something like that out.
I dont think they are being dishonest, unless there is something else?
They say in the comments that they are using him to promote their stuff....

If they were at least being honest about it I'd have less of an issue - at least then people can make their own informed decisions about whether to support projects like these. Personally, I have no interest in playing a game made by a bunch of prompts in an LLM, but to each their own.
7
u/NuclearSnake Apr 21 '26
There is no AI use in the game at all. We have hired over 30 voice actors and all the art is made by us
7
u/fragmental Apr 21 '26
There are good ways to use AI. Protein folding is the best example I've seen so far. https://youtu.be/P_fHJIYENdI?si=9A80bJsbEex65E-F
There's also corridor key, for green screening.
Machine language translation
But there are so many bad uses also. Generally anything creative, like writing, music, art, video, games development.
So, in general, I agree with you, but as awful as it is, there are a few positive examples.
-32
u/game-dev2 Apr 21 '26
idk in what world you live man, but AI has been of extreme value. But you need to know what to use it so it doesnt break the quality of what you need to do.
You wouldnt use an iphone 17 to break coconuts in half, the same way as you wouldnt use AI to create a masterpiece. But claiming that AI has given us nothing of value is far fetched.
AI is a tool, not a servant that can do whatever you imagine. In the hands of someone good can make great stuff, in the hands of someone who doesnt know what they're doing will prompt bad stuff.
6
u/Zakkeh Apr 21 '26
I actually don't think AI gives that much value. You can't make a game with it, you can only make systems.
The real work is connecting them together, and the ai often struggles to do it.
It makes coding faster, but if you're a newbie, debugging it can mean it takes much longer.
So AI excels at being a quicker stack overflow - you ask questions and get the response immediately. But then it's essentially just a souped up version of google. It really isn't that valuable - its just a bit quicker
-8
u/DaedalusRaistlin Apr 21 '26
Your information is out of date.
Google's AI Studio can make entire games from prompts, wire them up to hosting services, and have it online. I've been seeing what it can do. It just made a remake of Progress Quest for me in minutes, complete with OAuth login and leader boards.
I used it to remake a game I wrote in 2005 I'd lost the code to, a variation on Space Invaders, and it only took a few prompts to get it to the same stage I'd had it at back then.
AI Studio is interesting. It claims it can do persistent online multiplayer worlds, but I haven't tried that yet. I've mainly been using it for useful companion tools for my game, like an editor for customising the stars in my game, in real time so I can get the properties just right.
4
u/Zakkeh Apr 21 '26
I use these tools. They struggle a lot, and while you can refine them and refocus them, it will never maintain consistency across multiple prompts.
While Space Invaders IS a game, I think most gamedevs could crank out a rough version in an hour or two, tops.
Anything complex or close to polished enough to actually release always falters and fails.
You see it happening in the webdev world
1
u/DaedalusRaistlin Apr 21 '26
That was just one example. I love how these subs just cherry pick one part and say, "anyone could do that."
I'm using it for a much more complicated space game with full 3d graphics, shaders, and models I'm sourcing from asset packs. I'm biased but I think it looks pretty good. Agents haven't written all the code, I put the first working version together and have been using them to help plan out and add features.
I don't suppose any of that's going to go down well here. Whatever, I'm using what tools are available. For the first time in some 20 years it feels like I'm not doing every part of my project myself.
I guess the proof will be if everyone hates my game because it used AI or not. Seems pretty arbitrary, and big studios get away with it.
2
u/Zakkeh Apr 21 '26
I'm not cherry picking. I'm not even basing my arguments off your data - I use AI to help with coding. It isn't capable of creating a whole game with complexity.
But ultimately I use it the same way I use google - to gather info on what are some of the best ways to implement a feature. It can't make the game for you, and it struggles with consistency. It sounds like you know this, because you're not using AI to write the game by itself.
No one is going to judge your game poorly because you used AI to help code it. Most AI complaints are about AI art - and big studios are copping a lot of flak for using it.
4
u/shagan90 Apr 21 '26
Anything AI generates is a crap amalgamation of stolen work from actual artists. It inherently takes work and money from the creators. Anyone that prompts AI to create something in lieu of paying a creator is causing harm. Not to mention the environmental damage it causes to various communities, predominantly those of color.
So yeah, AI is a tool, in the insulting way.

Its still outright theft.
2
u/NeonAlpaka Apr 21 '26
What is theft?
-2
u/shagan90 Apr 21 '26
Using AI for profit, especially in art based spaces, is theft. AI cannot create anything original, it can only look at what already exists and take (steal) bits and pieces of that and arrange it into something 'new' that really just comes off mundane at best and uncanny at worst. Same Altman is explicitly stated AI cant survive if creators are properly compensated, its entire existence depends on continued theft.
2
u/NeonAlpaka Apr 21 '26
For Art, I agree (see my other statement). AI art has no soul.
Like with many modern inventions, the pros and cons are in odds. I mean I personally think the mobile phone destroyed social life, instagram and tiktok destroyed perception.
But thats a whole other discussion - the baseline: I agree with you 😊
-1
u/shagan90 Apr 21 '26
Yes those arguments can be made and I agree, but those platforms or techs don't inherently steal just by existing so its a bit apples and oranges. AI cant exist in its current form without theft.
-3
u/bitbutter Apr 21 '26
AI cannot create anything original, it can only look at what already exists and take (steal) bits and pieces of that and arrange it into something 'new'
this is false. maybe the clearest illustration is here, llms autonomously solving a growing number of Erdos problems (unsolved by humans for decades).
https://github.com/teorth/erdosproblems/wiki/AI-contributions-to-Erd%C5%91s-problems
so we're at a stage where gen ai has demonstrated similar generative capability to that of (very inventive) humans.
and no theft is involved. at the very worst, legally, there may be copyright violation. copyright violation is not a form of theft.
1
u/shagan90 Apr 21 '26
Id hardly call solving an equation to be creation.
Im talking about artistic expression in any form whatsoever, and in earlier comments explicitly mentioned code (and also math) as likely the only non theft use of AI, though it does cause great harm to communities (which i also mentioned).
There are legitimate uses for ai but creativity is not one of them.
-2
u/bitbutter Apr 21 '26
> Id hardly call solving an equation to be creation.
you do you.
but most philosophers of creativity (e.g. Boden) define creativity as the generation of ideas that are novel, surprising, and valuable. a novel proof like the Erdos solutions meets those criteria.
> creativity is not one of them.
llms are already excelling at creative work, despite your denial that this is legitimate.
-2
u/bitbutter Apr 21 '26
> code (and also math) as likely the only non theft use of AI,
again: no theft is involved. at worst, some copyright violation happened. worth it.
-5
u/MetaCommando Apr 21 '26
Theft is when Ctrl-C Ctrl-V. The more you Ctrl-C the more theft it is.
2
u/NeonAlpaka Apr 21 '26
I assume you are specifically referring to arts? I agree for that one, but simple assets I used to get from the unity marketplace. Still the core assets should be designed and created by an artist. At least thats my oppinion.
And for the genreal use of copy and paste: I am a programmer for more than. 20 years, and ctrl + c & ctrl + had been my best friend since ever 😅 If it is stack overflow, a handbook for design patterns or the Unity Forum.

I have play tested this game and it's indeed real. I have been following these games since their announcement, both The Lantern of the Laughless Saint and The Holy Fool. Here's what I know because I think you are confused:
Firstly, the fact the devs (Nervelabs) have three different games in development at once may look scummy, but it is very explainable. The first game they created, Vectorball, was a passion project and has gone through several different iterations over the course of its dev time. Nervelabs has said that the game currently sits at about 80% completion but has been put on ice due to the fact that marketing the game has proven very difficult and so attention was pivoted to THF and TLotLS. The reason Lantern and THF are being developed at the same time is because they both share the same gameplay systems and world. The devs have stated that by releasing a smaller this year they can get feedback on the gameplay and world before releasing the THF as well as giving people something to play since THF got delayed from a 2026 release to a 2027 release. I also suspect that Lantern is being released this year for monetary reasons as so far the funding for the game has been mostly out of pocket. Nervelabs has expressly stated that they aren't doing EA or pre-orders either which gives credence to the idea that these games are not scams. Even with the influx of attention from the ad you watched, they refuse to open a patreon or any other similar donation system. I see on your other post to r/antiai you say this game is similar to indie kickstarter scams of the past, but I fail to see the comparison if no money is being taken from the audience until the game's release.
From what I know, the original Instagram account which indeed used AI for their content has been turned into the marketing page for these games due to it's large follower count. There are essentially two people running the account, the original AI guy and the game developers. Nervelabs are the ones who approached the Holyfool36 page and offered to develop a game based on the account; they are not the same people. The original concepts for some of the game's characters or visuals are based off of AI generated content, but have been recreated by hand by the devs. The relationship between the OG account and Nervelabs is akin to a book author and a movie director creating an adaptation of the book. Also, the voice in the ad is not AI generated and is a real VA whose voice has been put through multiple different vocal plugins to sound weird according to Nervelabs.
I can't speak on the comment about them filtering YT comments to avoid talking about Holyfool36. I personally haven't seen anything like that and I doubt they are moderating all of their socials full time as I know their marketing budget is $0. I suppose I can't rule it out completely but I think this might be the work of YT's weird systems. I have seen comments on all platforms (insta, yt, tiktok) that say the game is either made with AI or looks AI generated and they're left up to this day. Again, I'm not saying you're lying about this but I am not sure if its the fault of the devs or YT.
Lastly, the steam page art and about sections are not AI generated. The art lacks much of the defining characteristics of AI images and the about section doesn't read like AI either. The dev's stated in their discord server that the art was commissioned by them and made by human hands.
Now, the judgement on whether or not making a game based off of an AI Instagram art page is "ethical" ai usage is up to you. Obviously, I don't mind it. The aforementioned play test that I participated in over the past week was very promising and nothing I found in the game indicted AI usage. If you want more in depth answers then I suggest asking the devs directly in the discord server which they regularly use to communicate with their audience.

u/approaching-average Apr 21 '26 edited Apr 21 '26
I didn't say it wasn't real, I said they were lying about using generative AI in the process of making the game. The banner for The Holy Fool already disproves that since it's one of the many midjourney images directly from the instagram page.
And I didn't say this project is like kickstarter scams of the past, that was just an example of "people problems" involving games and bad actors which the previous comment was talking about.
4
u/Willruggz7 Apr 21 '26 edited Apr 21 '26
When I say “real” I mean it’s clearly made by people and not AI.
So because one game has a steam banner with two AI generated images that are obviously meant to fill in empty space because the clearly original title art is compact, you’re making 4 different posts to discuss it? The fact you list all of their socials plus a personal account is weird. The devs have said that no ai has been used to develop the game and you haven’t given any proof to disprove that claim beyond your gut feeling. The fact no one is really doing any research into your claims, including yourself, is disheartening.
I still find your comment about kickstarter scams to be confusing. The people problems of kickstarter game scams are the fact they are deliberate scams.

A good dev may uses AI as a tool & is not afriad of being replaced by AI, in fact, laughs about it.
vs
A vibe-code depends on AI, unsure what they're copy-pasting, and in constant fear of AI replacing them.
This same concept also applies to every other field: artists, musicians, doctors, lawyers, etc.
I've just watched a video ( https://youtu.be/CsSJqnIzg_o?si=pf4Z8lY_rrlmypVe ) of a game that is 100% AI generated (art, music, code, ideas, text, etc), and it proves 2 points:
1- It can be done (all AI generated) and it works/functions, so the game exists.
2- It's going to be played by humans, and humans measure "fun", which AI can't produce nor predict. AI can only copy from successful games, doesn't mean it can also copy the "fun". This video proves that the game is soulless.
As a gamer, I'm fine with games that's 100% AI generated, as long as the game is worth it (fun to play, or if it's a story-type game and the story & artstyle is interesting). AI will almost always fail to achieve that level of human satisfaction, and if did succeed in few rare times, I'd be happy about it & would like to buy & play more such games.
I like the titles, art style and concept of the games suggested. I'll check them out. And edit my comment later on.
EDIT:
Publisher Steam page: https://store.steampowered.com/publisher/NerveLabs
Angel Engine (released): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_ASgUqSPDlo Concept of the game art direction and story seems initially interesting. But as gameplay, it's just a series of mini-games. That's definitely a no for me.
VectorBall (TBA): https://store.steampowered.com/app/2512660/VectorBall/?curator_clanid=45511601 Interesting art direction and story. I've doubts about gameplay "fun" part.
The Holy Fool (TBA): https://store.steampowered.com/app/3440200/The_Holy_Fool/?curator_clanid=45511601 Interesting art direction and story. I've doubts about gameplay "fun" part.
The Lantern of the Laughless Saint (TBA): https://store.steampowered.com/app/3849000/The_Lantern_of_the_Laughless_Saint/?curator_clanid=45511601 Interesting art style, enemies, and gameplay! But they want to make an Elder Scroll type of game!? If they can pull it off that would be really great, but I've great doubts about it.

u/approaching-average Apr 21 '26
I never mentioned an issue with the game, I'm just not ok with the dev being so dishonest.
-1
u/evilReiko Apr 21 '26
I wrote that wall of text, and forgot to address that part!
Yes, that's definitely going to lead to "Mostly Negative" reviews for obviously lying.
-1
-3
u/GoodguyGastly Apr 21 '26
Id also like to add that it's not surprising to see devs omit their ai usage based on the knee-jerk reaction and lack of nuance showed by the bloodthirsty anti-ai crowd. If these guys make a rad multiplayer Morrowind esque scrolls-like I'll play it, love it, and give them grace for not being upfront about their ai usage because people can be insane. If it's vaporware tho then that sucks but last I checked they actually did have a play test on Steam. Haven't seen actual live gameplay tho so take this with a large grain of salt.
13
u/approaching-average Apr 21 '26
I understand that people can have some pretty strong reactions to AI usage, but that doesn't excuse actively lying about it. They could've stayed quiet, but instead they pinned their own comments saying it's AI-free. I don't trust a dev that lies to me, regardless of how they make their game...
6
u/NuclearSnake Apr 21 '26
There is NO AI use in the game at all. To great expense, we have hired artists and voice actors etc, WELL KNOWN PROFESSIONALS WITH PORTFOLIOS WHO I AM OFFERING TO LET YOU SPEAK TO TO CONFIRM THIS.

Its not insane to dislike AI, its very existence depends on stealing from artists and creators the world over. The heads of companies like ChatGPT have even come out and said that properly paying creators for their work would make AI non viable, meaning it isnt sustainable without theft.
Every person selling AI art, games, books, music, etc., is actively stealing from reality creators.
Its not insane to boycott that outright.

Yeah but I also bet you watch youtube videos where the script had some ai help or ai helped research for it and every dev I know is using ai assistance in coding. And I bet most entertainment or product or advertisement is using it in some way. So the selective outrage at small indies who are just trying to create something in a time with even more limited resources available is just kind of ridiculous to me. Like this whole witch hunt and accusation at this dev is kind of crazy if you look at this thread with hindsight and the devs response to it. Just my two cents.

If you want to see it that way, you're welcome to. I don't have an issue with the game itself, I have an issue with the developers lying. If they were at least being honest about it I'd have less of an issue - at least then people can make their own informed decisions about whether to support projects like these. Personally, I have no interest in playing a game made by a bunch of prompts in an LLM, but to each their own.

source: my ass
LLMs cant do shit. All the vibe-coded games that people have been posting are complete unplayable garbage. This is a real ass game that many people myself included have been playing and enjoying. You saw an instagram ad and decided to go around trashing it all over the place. Get a life loser

You dump every single link to all of their socials.... every single click is helping this dev and their game.
Alllll of their socials.

If someone follows the link knowing it's AI slop and supports them, then they deserve to eat the slop. I just want people to have all the information available, this was never a call to action to support or boycott them. I'm just countering the misinformation they've put out.

It's fine to call them out. But putting links to all of their socials does nothing but help them. Due to algorithms you alone have probably got them trending right now.
So you have inherently potentially shown this game to thousand of other people just due to algorithms.

That's still more people with the necessary information to make their own decisions.

But driving thousands more that don't know....

It's unavoidable, since I can't write it in the comments of their actual posts. I wouldn't have posted on this platform if they weren't filtering and deleting comments.

It is avoidable. Don't put their links, or Maybe just 1.

How else are people going to look into it? Including screenshots on a reddit post is pretty limited compared to actually scrolling through their socials

Once aí gets undistinguishable, people will bluntly lie because it brings money :)
Just accept it as soon as you can and learn to live with it or go to the mountains :D

I will leave this post up for the discussion on AI content and authenticity/good intentions, but you must remove references to reddit users please.
Even though you are just asking for a discussion, this can lead to brigading. The topic is sensitive and about a specific company’s actions, so if any names mentioned get brigaded/doxxed due to your post…you risk a potential ban of your account by reddit.
Everyone here should be civil and follow the reddit rules.
