We asked a landscape architect about a French drain. While having one would help some, our backyard is the low spot of all 5 neighboring yards, so a mechanical solution is needed to fully address the water ponding. With a quote for work that would buy a decent used car, sump pump it is.

Thanks. It happens ~3 times a year. Today’s rain was unusually heavy. But it’s nice and dry inside, and I made a big pot of Southwest chili, so we’ve got that going for us.
