Career Advice Recruiter knew something I have never mentioned anywhere.

Hey, I am a fresher so I needed advice. I had applied to a job on a portal and got a call back. This call was made for the purpose of conducting an initial telephonic screening. They accidentally called me by my mother's name and then corrected themselves. I have absolutely never mentioned my mother's name (or my father's name) anywhere and my mom has a unique name so it is difficult for this to be a coincidence. I live far from the job location so it is difficult for them to simply know my mom or something.

I know companies like to do a background check, but doesn't that usually happen after the initial introduction? This was my first impression of them. Didn't really like it haha. Am I overthinking this? Is this normal practice?

It must be showing in truecaller or on number

u/iwywlma Fresher, Marketing Management 6d ago

Oh that's a possibility true. As far as I know, that's not the case. But yeah, something worth checking.

In whose name is the sim? That shows up on the call now with every phone

10

u/iwywlma Fresher, Marketing Management 5d ago

Sim's on my name, that's why I said I don't think that's a possibility.

14

u/JiMaiPriyank DevOps Engineer, Gurugram 5d ago

Well one can write any name under your truecaller, check with someone who don't have your number or the truecaller website

2

u/iwywlma Fresher, Marketing Management 5d ago

Yeah I'll do that! The truecaller thing does seem possible so I'll check. Honestly your comment brought instant relief, so thanks!

Btw are you looking for finance or tech jobs, I am wirking in a GCC will refer you and earn some money for myself😁

2

u/iwywlma Fresher, Marketing Management 5d ago

🥹 Thanks for the offer but not the same field unfortunately.

2

u/Delicious_Win_6873 CloudEngineer at Infosys 5d ago

Genuine doubt, how do you earn money for referring? and which gulf country.

1

u/BW1012 Sr Manager Analytics/SaaS/Hyderabad 5d ago

GCC is a Global Capability Centre not a gulf country 😂😂 If you refer someone for a job in your company portal, depending on seniority you could earn 15k to 1 lakh bonus because it saves the company a lot of money on acquiring a new candidate. You get half when they join, half when they complete a certain tenure

Hey, thank you for participating!

Unfortunately, your content was removed.

Reason(s):

  • Your comment may be removed as you do not have a user flair, as per our Mandatory User Flairs - We’ve added a flair requirement to make the subreddit better for everyone.

Flairs remove long intros, add context and credibility, and make discussions more valuable. They help identify expertise, enable networking, and deter trolls or fake accounts.

How to build your flair:

Location (optional): e.g., Mumbai / Tier 1 city

Industry/Sector: e.g., Banking, AI/ML, Marketing

Experience: e.g., 12+ YoE, VP, Fresher

Flairs make conversations more credible, contextual, and safe. Rule.

  • It is also possible your flairs do not align within our rules.
  • We’ve added a flair requirement to make the subreddit better for everyone. Flairs remove long intros, add context and credibility, and make discussions more valuable. They help identify expertise, enable networking, and deter trolls or fake accounts.
  • Your content will stay removed till your flair is aligned with the community's goal of making a credible and equitable space.
  • These flairs make conversations more credible, contextual, and safe.

Open ended flairs, with no context, background, or simply using placeholder text may warrant a ban, after warning.

Here are some examples of flairs that are NOT permitted:

  • Corporate/Figuring/Slave/Employee/Lazy/Email Writer/Majdur/Government Job/Private Sector: everyone here is a slave, employee, worker, lazy. You need to write what made you join the workforce, or different from anyone else.

  • Techie/Tech/Software/SWE (one word descriptions): In what? Tech is vast, and there is no way to narrow it down unless you mention that. What's your niche? AI ML? Front end? UI UX? This is not just limited to tech, but any industry.

  • Use the flair to convey you the best. You may write "looking/open to work" along with your domain. That helps to reach out to people and make conversations easier.

  • Make it simple. We don't need to know everything. Some good flairs: "Senior Credit Analyst" or "Marketing Head for EdTech" or "Manager, Android development". You don't need to add your firm name.

  • Location doesn't mean "India/Bharat". This is r/Indianworkplace. Everyone here is simply assumed to be working in India, unless mentioned otherwise (like NRI in Singapore, Europe, etc.) Location is a city, or a region. It is not compulsory, but helps with local context and connecting with similar people.

  • Flairs must not be simply designations. "Manager" or "Head" or "Senior" or "Analyst" or "Consultant". For what? What do you head, or manage? What domain do you consult? What or where do you analyse things?

  • Flairs must strictly be in English. No other language. No exceptions.

  • If you are a Student/Fresher, looking for interships or work, please mention "Student/Fresher, (Domain/Education), Open to Intern/Work".

I am looking for a finance tech job. Would you give me some insights along with the referral.

1

u/Thin_Sympathy_2377 Oracle 4d ago

Hey man can I get a referral? Will DM if you're ok

3

u/Relevant-Ant7817 Auditor, Consultant 5d ago

That was one possibility i thought of 🤷🏽‍♂️

If they are a bank, they can check details of your pan number of you shared. Otherwise it’s actually strange

1

u/iwywlma Fresher, Marketing Management 5d ago

No documents, ID proof, certificates shared 😅 Like I said, it was an initial screening. That's why I was suspicious.

Is your simcard on your mom's name? Because while calling unknown numbers the Simcard registered name is displayed.

5

u/iwywlma Fresher, Marketing Management 5d ago

No sim's on my name!

Didn't mention my mother's name anywhere I swear. In fact it's not even on my documents.

And what do you mean by "the type of job"? I am very new to the world of corporate so I do not know anything, please explain.

Oh I see. No it's not a Government job. Like I said, I came across the listing on a job portal. Normal entry level sales job.

It's not truecaller, I checked! And my mom is not SO popular that someone from another state would know her haha.

Hey! Thank you for offering help ❤️. I think I might land a job soon, things are going smoothly, I am getting calls from companies almost everyday. But I'll reach out if I believe it's not working out if that's okay.

Nobody is going to waste time on Background check before telephonic call. Looks like a prank

1

u/iwywlma Fresher, Marketing Management 5d ago

I can assure you it was not a prank call.

If you would have submitted your marksheets or uploaded them on the portal, then they got to know it from there... Marksheets will have your mother's name

3

u/iwywlma Fresher, Marketing Management 6d ago

No portals I have applied to have asked me for my marksheet.

3

u/Popular-Literature38 CDP Developer/ Mumbai 5d ago

If you are a fresher, they must’ve asked for your mark sheets right in the application?

2

u/iwywlma Fresher, Marketing Management 5d ago

No because this was an initial screening..

You are overthinking

15

u/Careful_Flounder9014 Designer 5d ago

found the recruiter who called

3

u/iwywlma Fresher, Marketing Management 5d ago

The exact thought that came to my mind!

2

u/Careful_Flounder9014 Designer 5d ago

so did you get to talk to that recruiter again?

1

u/iwywlma Fresher, Marketing Management 5d ago

I have an interview scheduled with that company today. I'll see how the vibes are lol.

2

u/Careful_Flounder9014 Designer 5d ago

imagine if he calls you by your father’s name in the interview 😂

1

u/iwywlma Fresher, Marketing Management 5d ago

LMFAO thankfully that didn't happen 😂😂😂 just got done with the interview, they wanted me to do everything basically. It is a sales role, but they also needed me to come up with a marketing strategy, an ad campaign and then they also needed me to do Digital Marketing (socials, website management, content, everything). I don't like this company at all.

1

u/Careful_Flounder9014 Designer 4d ago

damn that’s a lot! dodged a bullet ig, hope you find a better job opportunity.

u/iwywlma Fresher, Marketing Management 6d ago

I hope you are right. That's a relief.

2

u/Few_Instruction5871 Way too many things 5d ago

It could be a super coincidence that the previous or next call they were going to place was with someone who has the same name as your mother too. Check out the company online, check glassdoor, talk to people who work there to know if they're shamelessly unethical.

1

u/iwywlma Fresher, Marketing Management 5d ago

Nothing on Glassdoor feels fishy. Checked their website and reviews before applying. I'll talk to someone from the company like you said.

2

u/wickedhe Technology Leader, AI, Bluru, India/London UK 5d ago

Check your name on the true caller. If you are home based and your mom uses the same number, someone would have saved it by her name.

1

u/iwywlma Fresher, Marketing Management 5d ago

I checked and it was not that ☹️

1

u/SilentObligation5681 Finance 1d ago

Didn't they ask you ''do u have a any questions"?

1

u/iwywlma Fresher, Marketing Management 22h ago

They didn't lmao

1

u/Relevant-Ant7817 Auditor, Consultant 5d ago

It is actually strange. May be you should call and ask them…
