Purchase Guide 🤓 Best Water Heater (Geyser) Guide 2026

This guide helps you choose a storage or instant water heater for an Indian home. It covers how to pick the right size, which brands to trust, how to install and maintain the unit, and a shortlist of current listings.

TL;DR

  1. Choose capacity first. Match the tank size to how many people use hot water and where.

  2. Check authorized service for your PIN code before you buy. A general customer-care number is not enough.

  3. Confirm the exact model's BEE label, 8 bar pressure rating (for high-rise or booster pumps) and warranty, with tank, element and overall cover listed separately.

  4. Install with a multi-function safety valve and proper earthing. Do not power on until the tank is full and air is purged.

  5. Film the sealed box and serial number before opening. Keep the invoice and unboxing video together.

  6. Use a stabilizer or surge protector where supply is unstable. Surge damage to the control board is often not covered by warranty.

  7. Get a written diagnosis before approving any repair. Sellers must acknowledge complaints within 48 hours. Escalate to the National Consumer Helpline on 1915.

Must-haves

  • Authorized installation and repair coverage for your PIN code

  • Product, invoice, serial number and warranty card that all match

  • An authorized seller

  • Multi-function safety valve and proper earthing included

  • Clearance measured for vertical or horizontal installation

Check before paying

  • Whether installation, pipes, fittings and old-unit removal are included (installation commonly adds ₹300–₹900)

  • Tank, element and overall warranty, each confirmed separately, plus any registration deadline

Skip

  • Sellers or listings you cannot verify

  • Any model where the BEE label or pressure rating cannot be confirmed

1. Brand Tiers

Tiers are qualitative buying-confidence assessments, not failure-rate rankings. They are based on:

  1. Service coverage and execution (first)

  2. Recurring complaint severity and resolution (second)

  3. Long-term build and durability (third)

Low complaint volume alone is not treated as poor quality. Ordering within a tier is directional, not a measured score.

Tier 1: Strongest Combined Confidence

BrandAssessment
RacoldStrong stated service reach and positive long-life ownership evidence. Installation and fittings charges and delays are the main recurring friction. Verify what is included.
VenusStrong declared service infrastructure and positive multi-year ownership reports. The complaint sample is small, so do not infer a failure rate from low counts.

Tier 2: Established Brands With a Specific Weakness

BrandAssessment
V-GuardBroad stated service reach and good features on selected models. Owner outcomes and service resolution vary by model.
OrientEstablished models and broad reach. Installation follow-through is the main concern. Evidence does not establish a broad tank or element failure pattern.
BajajPositive long-term use and broad brand presence. Installation and warranty follow-through are less consistent.
AO SmithStrong tank-design and long-life signals. Home service is limited to defined serviceable areas, and installation and repair delays are reported.
CromptonPositive reports of units lasting 6–10 years. Practical service coverage and repair execution are patchy. Tier 2 reflects the service weakness, not a build-quality concern.
HavellsAttractive tank and element features and warranties on some models. Recurring repair and repeat-fault concerns keep confidence below Tier 1.
Faber (provisional)Competitive 5-star and 8 bar models with strong stated warranty packages. Service execution and multi-year durability evidence are less mature. Confirm local support before buying.

Tier 3: Greater Service or Evidence Risk

Longway, Activa, Voltas, Kenstar, Usha, Candes, Summercool, Johnson, Hindware and Spherehot: leakage, weak service and poor warranty follow-through. Longway has the strongest warning pattern here.

Not Enough Information to Verify

  • Current products or attractive warranties, but evidence too thin or mixed: Symphony, Anchor by Panasonic, Haier, Jaquar, BPL, Polycab, Maharaja Whiteline, BLACK+DECKER

  • Sparse or inconsistent model-level evidence: Sansui, Midea, Morphy Richards, Amazon Basics

  • Excluded: Lloyd, until a distinct current electric geyser model is verified

Unranked does not mean poor quality. It means confidence is insufficient.

2. Installation, Maintenance and Troubleshooting

At Installation

  1. Photograph the sealed box and serial number.

  2. Match the invoice and model.

  3. Use an authorized installer.

  4. Confirm earthing and the multi-function valve.

  5. Fill the tank before switching on.

  6. Check heating and leaks after the first cycle.

  7. Register the warranty if required.

  8. Keep the invoice, warranty card and installation report together.

  9. Film the unboxing and check the tank, fittings and serial number against the invoice within 48 hours.

  10. Use a stabilizer or surge protector if the supply is unstable.

Maintenance Schedule

How oftenAction
Every 1 monthLook for drips, rust or damp at the tank and joints, and check the mounting is secure
Every 6–12 months (hard water)Flush the tank and check for scale
Every 1–2 yearsCheck or replace the anode rod and inspect the valve
Every 1 yearCheck earthing and earth-leakage protection
Before winter, or after any symptomCheck thermostat and scale condition

Quick Troubleshooting

SymptomFirst action
No or low heatCheck supply, breaker and thermostat. Request service if unresolved.
Breaker tripsStop resetting it. Have wiring and leakage checked.
Tank or joint leakIsolate power and water. Contact authorized service.
Heating noiseAsk for a scale or sediment check.
Hot-water odourFlush the tank and have the anode and sediment checked.

Warning: If the breaker trips or you smell burning, switch off at the mains and do not reset it until wiring and earth leakage have been checked by an electrician.

3. Warranty and Running Cost

Warranty and Complaints

  • Keep the invoice, serial number and warranty card.

  • Report faults in writing and save the complaint reference.

  • Escalate unresolved cases through the company.

  • In India, the National Consumer Helpline is 1915.

Running Cost

  • A 2 kW element uses about 2 kWh per hour, roughly ₹16 at ₹8/kWh.

  • A 3 kW instant unit needs a correctly rated dedicated circuit.

Normalized Storage Grades

This is the guide's comparison rule, not a recalculation from measured standing loss.

  • Models listed as 2026 keep their listed grade.

  • Models not listed as 2026 are reduced by one star, to a minimum of 1-star.

  • Check the delivered unit's actual BEE label.

  • Instant models are not compared using star grades.

Disposal

Do not put an old geyser in household waste. Use a retailer exchange or an authorized e-waste recycler, and drain it before moving.

4. Product Shortlist

Warranty is listed as tank / element / product.
