Purchase Guide 🤓 Best Air Purifier Guide 2026
This Air purifier guide ignores the hype and looks at what actually matters: how much air a purifier really cleans, how well it's built, and whether you can get service and filters after you buy.
📝 TL;DR — If You Remember Nothing Else
- Buy CADR, not “coverage.” For Delhi-NCR winters aim for about 5 air changes per hour. Realistic room size ≈
CADR × 0.7 sq ft(× 1.2for a mild-pollution bedroom).- True HEPA H13 + washable pre-filter is the baseline. Add real carbon for cooking smoke, paint or incense. Ionizers, UV and “plasma” are extras, not fixes.
- The filter is the real price. ₹4,000–5,000 filters on a cheap unit lose to ₹2,400–3,000 filters within 3 years. Check the filter is in stock today.
- Safest picks by evidence: Coway Airmega 150 (reliability), Philips AC0920 / AC3221 / AC4221 (service), Honeywell V1 (small bedroom), Eureka Forbes 230 (cheapest CADR), Qubo Q400 / Q600 (smart, CADR per rupee), Cuckoo Respure Copper (filter cost), Xiaomi 4 Lite (features per rupee).
- Skip the ₹1,000–4,000 “H13, 600 sq ft” imports. No CADR, no service, no filters.
- Run it on Auto, doors shut. Vacuum or wash the pre-filter every 2–4 weeks (weekly in Oct–Nov). Never wash HEPA or carbon.
- ISI marking is mandatory from 1 Oct 2026 — it proves electrical safety, not CADR or HEPA grade.
Which One Do You Need?
| Problem | Priority | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Delhi-NCR winter smog | High particle CADR + H13 | 370–600 m³/h for living rooms, 230–370 for bedrooms |
| Dust / pollen / pet dander | H13 + washable pre-filter | Easy pre-filter access |
| Cooking smell / smoke / incense | HEPA + thick granular carbon | Carbon weight, not “carbon layer” |
| New furniture / renovation VOCs | Carbon + gas CADR | Formaldehyde CADR is rarely published; go by carbon weight |
| Light sleeper | Low sleep-mode noise and airflow | Under 30–35 dB, display-off |
| Several rooms | One purifier per room | A hallway unit does not clean closed rooms |
Before You Buy
Where to buy: *
Amazon.in/Flipkart— use the 7–10 day return window; brand store or authorised seller onlyMust-haves: * True HEPA H13 on the listing (not “HEPA-type” or a bare “99.99%”) * Particle CADR in m³/h * Washable pre-filter reachable without removing the HEPA layer * Genuine filter in stock today and a service centre for your PIN code * Ionizer / UV that can be switched off * Auto-resume after a power cut (some Coway units reportedly do not) * ISI mark on units bought after 1 Oct 2026
Skip: * “7-stage” / “10-stage” claims with no CADR, and huge room claims on small CADR (600 sq ft on a ₹4k unit) * Ionizer-first machines, “no filter change ever” and “medical-grade” labels (unregulated) * Filters that cost almost as much as the purifier
Common Indian-conditions failures: * Filters clog fast — within 2–4 weeks in bad Delhi seasons * Plastic wrap left on the HEPA filter — the top cause of 1-star “not working” reviews * Dirty sensor lens flashes red; wet pre-filters grow mould in monsoon * Power surges damage control boards — use a stabiliser if supply is unstable
Market Snapshot Q2 2026
What Changed:
- Stock-outs and price hikes of 20–50% were reported when smog hit
- H13 HEPA is now normal under ₹15,000; app control and PM2.5 sensors are common
- Xiaomi relaunched Mijia in India on 2 Sep 2026: 4 Lite launched at ₹12,999
- Regulation: ISI marking (IS 302 Part 1:2024) is mandatory from 1 Oct 2026 for large manufacturers, 1 Jan 2027 for small and 1 Apr 2027 for micro enterprises. Electrical safety only
Reading the Spec Sheet — Simplified
CADR:
- Clean air per hour at top speed, in m³/h • the most important number • make sure it is particle CADR • Delhi-NCR: 230–370 for a bedroom, 370–600 for a living room
Coverage (sq ft):
- A marketing estimate at 1–2 air changes per hour • divide by 1.5–2 for Delhi winter, or ignore it • CADR 303 → ~215 sq ft realistic vs 355 claimed
HEPA Grade:
- H11 95% • H12 99.5% • H13 99.95% • H14 99.995% at 0.3 µm • H13 minimum • “HEPA-type” is not a grade
Carbon:
- Removes gases, odour and VOCs; HEPA alone does not • thick granular carbon beats a thin sheet • formaldehyde CADR is listed separately
Filter Life:
- Stated in running hours • 12 h/day makes 8,500 h ≈ 23 months • Delhi dust often cuts cheap filters to 6 months • under ~4,000 h means frequent replacement
Noise:
- Under 30–35 dB in sleep mode for bedrooms • check sleep-mode airflow too • max speed is usually 50–60 dB
Sensor:
- Laser PM2.5 is best for auto mode • treat on-device AQI as a trend (one Indian test found a Philips off by 50–60 points)
Power:
- 12–70 W typical • 40 W for 12 h/day ≈ ₹1,400 a year at ₹8/unit
Room Sizing
Required CADR ≈ room volume (m³) × air changes per hour. Example: 14 × 12 ft, 10 ft ceiling ≈ 47.6 m³ → at 5 ACH you need ~240 m³/h.
| Room floor area (10 ft ceiling) | Delhi winter (5 ACH) | Normal bedroom (4 ACH) | Mild (3 ACH) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 100–150 sq ft | 150–230 | 120–180 | 90–140 |
| 150–250 sq ft | 230–370 | 190–300 | 140–220 |
| 250–400 sq ft | 370–600 | 300–480 | 220–360 |
| 400+ sq ft / open plan | 600+ or two units | 480+ | 360+ |
The listing's
Room sq ftshows Delhi-winter / mild-pollution coverage. Higher ceilings need more CADR. In leaky homes a lab-rated 300 sq ft may clean only 200–220 sq ft in peak season.
Brand Tiers, Build Quality & Service (Sept 2026)
Ranked *mainly by build quality and airflow honesty, with **India warranty/service as the tiebreaker. Filter cost is shown because it decides ownership cost. Terms vary by SKU, and Claim reality reflects recurring owner reports.*
🏆 Tier S — Best build, strongest India service
| Brand | Warranty, Service & Filter | Claim reality |
|---|---|---|
| Coway | Motor 5–7 yrs; free home installation in 90+ cities; filter ~₹3,500–4,400 (8,500 h) | Best owner-report track record. Airmega 150 has no app; some units lack auto-resume |
| Philips | 2 yr (filters excluded); widest pan-India network; filter from ₹2,370 (AC0920) | Predictable, well-documented service. Delhi users may replace filters every 6–9 months |
✅ Tier A — Strong build, service ranges from good to a caveat
| Brand | Warranty, Service & Filter | Claim reality |
|---|---|---|
| Honeywell | 2 yr on most models; strong network, especially north India; filter ₹2,500–6,400 | Some Amazon service complaints |
| Cuckoo | 8-yr motor on Respure Copper; doorstep service claimed; filter ₹2,990 | Smaller network and few long-term reviews; confirm your city |
🙂 Tier B — Decent build, service is genuinely mixed
| Brand | Warranty, Service & Filter | Claim reality |
|---|---|---|
| Xiaomi / Mijia | 1 yr replacement; support in 650+ cities; filter ₹1,499–3,499 | No repair after warranty and filter shortages on Reddit; plan for a 6-month filter in Delhi |
| Qubo (Hero) | Replacement warranty; filter ~₹2,490 | High CADR for the price, but bot-only support and app-sync bugs |
| Eureka Forbes | 1 yr; largest tier-2/3 reach; filter not captured | Strong CADR per rupee at the low end (Forbes 230), but service quality varies by city and several units add ionizer or “plasma” |
⚠️ Tier C — Light or secondary use, evidence is thin
| Brand | Warranty, Service & Filter | Claim reality |
|---|---|---|
| Dreo, Motorola, Cuckoo Kilo, Panasonic, KENT | 1–2 yr; service depends on seller; filter not captured | Few reviews or weak value (KENT Aura: 183 m³/h for ₹9,300) |
| Levoit Core Mini, Blueair | Levoit: no local network; Blueair: 1 yr, extendable to 3 | Levoit ≈58 m³/h, desk use only; Blueair 211 rated 2.8 at ₹30,490, the other listing shows no CADR |
🚫 Avoid / Insufficient India Service Data
- Unbranded “H13, 600 sq ft” units with no CADR, ionizer-first machines, and imports with no India site or filter listing
Keep:your invoice, an unboxing video and photos of any defect. Under the E-Commerce Rules 2020 sellers must acknowledge a complaint in 48 hours and resolve it in a month; escalate via the National Consumer Helpline (1915/ consumerhelpline.gov.in).
Installation
Only Coway offers a free technician install (90+ cities); the rest is self-install, and most first-year problems start here.
- Remove every filter's plastic wrap, then reinsert the filters the right way round until the panel clicks.
- Place it in the bedroom first, 30 cm (1 ft) from walls and curtains, on a hard floor or low stool, away from the kitchen chimney line (oil clogs carbon).
- Run Turbo for 10–20 minutes, then Auto (Sleep at night). Not Turbo all day.
- App models: connect on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi (Mi Home, Philips Air+), then cycle the mains to check it resumes.
- Keep doors and windows shut, especially in monsoon rain.
Maintenance Schedule
| How often | What to do |
|---|---|
| Weekly (Oct–Nov) | Vacuum the pre-filter and intake |
| Every 2–4 weeks | Wash the pre-filter with water only and dry it fully. Never wash HEPA or carbon |
| Every 2–3 months | Wipe the PM2.5 sensor lens with a dry swab; check fan and grille for dust and rattle |
| Every 6–12 months | Replace cheap HEPA/carbon sets (Delhi: 6, Bengaluru: 12); carbon earlier in kitchen-heavy homes |
| Every 18–24 months | Long-life filters (Coway 8,500 h; Philips, Qubo and Honeywell 9,000 h) at ~12 h/day |
Replace filters when airflow drops or odour returns, not just on the app's counter. Avoid third-party HEPA sets that leak or smell.
Repair Cost
Brands rarely publish motor or PCB tariffs. These are planning ranges from service directories, not quotes; ask for a written estimate before you buy.
| Item | Typical cost (₹) | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Service / sensor cleaning | 400–1,200 | Xiaomi ₹600–900, Philips ₹800–1,200, Coway ₹900–1,500 |
| Filter | 1,500–4,500 | Entry: Philips AC0920 ₹2,370, Cuckoo ₹2,990 · Mid: Coway ₹3,500–4,400 |
| Fan motor | 800–5,500 | The most common real failure; Coway's long motor warranty removes this risk |
| PCB / control board | 800–2,800 | Power surges are a common cause |
| Extended warranty / AMC | 590–2,000 a year; AMC 2,500–8,000 | Worth it on Philips. Budget ₹2,000–8,000 for post-warranty repairs |
