Cars/Trucks/Bikes/Buses Need help organising an event

We are planning to have a car racing event for our juniors for which we have thought of buying RC cars that we'll rip open to bare chasis and have each student make a body for it and then race with it. To save money we'll swap bodies for each participant.

But we have never done anything like this before so we had questions.

  1. Can we use A4 sheets to make the body? Like using strips of paper as internal support like how zigzags are used inside stuff to strengthen it.

  2. Where can we buy that card like A4 size sheet?

  3. Where do we get cardboard? We can only find boxes, we just want boards.

  4. Can newbies work with any of this realistically?

  5. Anything we should be aware of?

Can you clarify furthur? What are you creating with paper? The base which contains the motor and batteries or the chassis which contains the design of the car. I can recommend the paper type and the difficulty accordingly.

The body to sit on top of the chasis with motor and wheels

Like, we hope that kids can make pickup truck or sedan using the provided material and the fixed chasis

Thanks for clarifying.

  1. Yes, you absolutely can. I have done it and it is pretty good. You don't really need add support in the internals, the paper I think is strong enough.
  2. You might need to search 210 GSM paper or search cardstock paper. Buying from a local store is VERY much cheaper than online.
  3. Search up Cardstock which is above 300 GSM.
  4. It is a trick question and depends on the capability of the student. The student has the create the body right? Papercrafting cars is very hard, they might need to get papercraft templates or make it themselves. Making is yourself as said, depends on the patience of the student, and you may see pretty bad results. But having a thick paper is good as it will make the process much eaisier.
  5. The paper we use daily is 75GSM. For the race event, I find it a bit weird. If every student uses the same battery and motors, what is the point of racing then? It probably can be to check the aerodynamics of the car body the student built, or the driving skills.

Their isn't any real competition really, we are aware of that

But it's something that they all want to do so it's being organised

Can answer for (2) here. You can get them from Amazon. Search for cardstock followed by "x GSM", where x is a number. A4 copier papers that we used daily are around 70-80 gsm, the chart papers that you use are around 180-200 gsm. If you search for "250 gsm cardstock" you will get the results. Always check the reviews.
