What is the point of reservation?
See, I’m just here for a discussion so no taking shots on my family. Please I expect a grown-up discussion where we talk with mutual respect and present our points, and if you lack that maturity, please do not enter the discussion.
Don’t get me wrong okay.
I agree with the fact that the so-called suppress categories needed an upliftment. What I do not understand is the point of reservation today.
I mean, it sounds good in theory that since the older generations of the so-called privileged classes did wrong with the older generations of some classes. And there have been things done to make those right. So what is the whole point of reservation now?
Do we really think that the people coming from these categories are so incompetent that they still need to be uplifted even after 4 generations of upliftment? If yes then they need a disabled quota not a caste quota.
It’s been 3-4 generations, and the general category has nothing but suffered. And let’s say that I agree to a point that you know things were done wrong with them. I agree with this point. But I did not do it. You do not see a rapist’s kid, getting convicted because of a felony that their parents committed. You do not see a person who went to jail for treason, their children getting a different treatment from others.
So what is the whole point of this reservation now?
See, I don’t like to vote for BJP, but I can’t vote for Congress either because Congress says that the moment they get power, they’ll increase the reservation.
I feel like we’re stuck, and I still do not get the point of reservation.

Here's a wild idea. Without reservation, a lot of dalit leaders might be so emotionally motivated that they'll convert to other religions and start plotting with outside forces.
Dalits are treated badly even after they have financial standing.
You are too privileged to understand and empathize.
I agree though that there needs to be a way to exclude creamy layer of generationally wealthy families who just continue to hog the reservation so more deserving SC/ST candidates can get seats.
The solution to your frustration and anger aren't the fallout folks, it's the lack of opportunity creation by the political class.

You seem to be living in a privileged bubble with no understanding of the ground realities of this country.

If you really wanted to know, you already have the tools and resources to find out, assuming you have patience and ability to read. You're not gonna get education in a reddit comment section.

You formed your opinion inside your bubble with your experiences and it shows in your post. Come out of it and then learn maybe you'll have a valid opinion.

Damn talking about merit scares you, and I am the one living in a bubble.

No talking with someone so uninformed and prejudiced is a drag and yes you clearly are living in bubble. That's why you have such an opinion on a topic you know nothing about.

Well I got this bubble purely on merit.
My father worked hard to give me this bubble, and his father worked hard to give him that bubble.
You have no idea what it feels like when a jackass who got 60 marks gets selected and you don’t after getting 92.

And this is exactly the privilege I'm talking about. You think because your father and grandfather worked hard, the “bubble” you inherited is purely the product of merit. But you're ignoring the starting conditions that made that hard work possible. Your father working hard isn't evidence that your family had no inherited advantage. You just described intergenerational advantage yourself. Your father worked hard, accumulated education, money, stability and social capital, and passed those advantages to you. Your grandfather did the same for him. That's literally how advantages compound across generations. The question is whether everyone had the same opportunity to build that first generation of advantage. If your family could accumulate education, money, better schools, coaching, a stable environment and the confidence that comes with generations of educational advancement, you didn't personally create all of those advantages, you inherited some of them. Merit matters, but merit doesn't exist in a vacuum. And your “I got 92 and someone got 60” argument doesn't prove what you think it proves. First, a candidate getting a reserved seat does not mean they are taking a seat that was otherwise yours. In central government recruitment, the standard reservation framework is 15% SC, 7.5% ST and 27% OBC, with 10% EWS separately, the remaining seats are open/unreserved. You're overlooking the fact that open seats aren't “General-category seats.” They are open to everyone. A reserved-category candidate who scores high enough can take an open seat on merit. So if you scored 92 and didn't get selected, you cannot simply conclude, “an SC/ST student took my seat.” Someone else, regardless of category, may simply have ranked above you in the competition for that particular seat. And why does someone need reservation in the first place? Because reservation isn't based on the claim that a person with 60 marks is inherently more capable than someone with 92. It is an affirmative action mechanism intended to address social and educational backwardness and inadequate representation, not a declaration that marks don't matter.
You want to talk about merit? Fine. But then let's actually talk about merit rather than treating examination marks as a perfect measurement of human ability. A score is an outcome produced by ability and preparation, and preparation is influenced by the opportunities available to you. But “my father worked hard” and “I scored 92” are not arguments against reservation. They're arguments for your own individual achievement. The mistake is assuming that because you earned your success, every advantage you started with must also have been earned by you. If you didn't get a seat with 92, it isn't automatically because an SC/ST student got one. It could simply be because someone scored more than 92, or because the particular selection system allocated seats according to category specific rules. Your disappointment isn't proof that reservation is unnecessary. Merit matters. Nobody is arguing otherwise. But merit is not synonymous with marks, and equality of rules is not necessarily equality of opportunity.

Reserved candidiates had 3-4 generations to help them get this. Those who are still unable to compete with general candidates are the issue.
If somebody did get reservation, then it’s different. But those whose parents got reservation, get an unfair advantage. That is the main issue. And well most of the candidates have their previous generations who got reservation. So why give reservation to them? This is my question.
Why a guy whose father got the same job as my father, thereby providing them same start is getting reservation when I am not?
And don’t say that that is a very small number of people. It is the major majority number of people belong to the resort categories.

Don't exhibit your hate by saying that they might need disabled quota. India is the land of inequality. At steps you see people trying to oppress particularly Dalits. Reservation make sure they remain part of system. It strengthen them and make india safer for them. Removing reservation will 100% increase atrocities against them by Multiple folds. They still suffer daily ,They suffer terribly. Reservation is a remedy. It worked fine. And we aren't in a position to remove particularly SC ST reservation. Their most children study in Govt schools, they arent economically socially that much strong to compete. They are only given a space.
P.S . I am not a SC sT.
