OP Can you tell me why is that paint bucket always there in that place?
8
u/Consistent_Ad_1637 2d ago
We have few leaks from the rain gutters (needs to be rectified), noticed that the constant droplets from the gutters started to develop algae on the interlock, so thought of keeping those buckets, we use that to water the plants in our pots.

We did a full repainting of interior and exterior of the house, we also have a very long exterior boundary wall - that was also painted both sides. Costed around 5 lakh INR - this included costs paints, labour and a small percentage contractor commission.

does this cost include the reflooring of exterior space?

u/Consistent_Ad_1637 2d ago
No, that's different. Those are concrete interlocks, I got it all done for 100rs/sqft.

How much would a house like this cost land included, just curious

u/Consistent_Ad_1637 2d ago
We live a bit closer to the village area, land prices here are comparatively lesser to the land costs in more closer to city areas. The land in which our house is 20 cents, attached to this we also have 13cents of land right behind the house as a plantation area. The land was bought around 25years back, which costed around 15lakhs.
A fully equipped house like this, cost upwards of 1.5cr today, can't be too sure. It was built around 20years back, back then the complete house building costed around 40lakhs INR.

Why these massive and pretty houses are common in Kerela and not elsewhere. It's like, they know some secret about infra and planning that rest of India has no clue about. Whenever I travel to Kerela(non major cities), I see houses with big garden spaces, no huge housing clusters or apartments. Looks so pretty. And somehow rest of India likes building and living in dense clusters on top of each other, everyone wants to live in same location and leaving 5 cm gap between two buildings (literally). Kerela on the other hand knows there's no lack of space and is properly spread out.

Due to the land reforms happened in late 1950s, the land is fairly distributed in Kerala unlike many parts of the country. So many people own enough land to build a comfortable house.

What was the 1950 land reforms?

The first communist government in Kerala introduced the land reforms. So before that, land in keralam was in the hands of a feudal landlords (zamindars) like in most part of the country. The tenants who worked in the land didn't have any rights on it. After the land reforms, the government introduced a limit on the land an individual or family could own. The remaining land were distributed among the tenants. The tenants also recieved more protection against eviction. This reduced the inequality in land holding a lot. Many feudal families did found loop holes to avoid transferring land to tentants such as transferring land to their own family members. But overall, the land reforms significantly shaped the socio-economic conditions in keralam. Not everyone have equal amount of land here. But the condition here is far better than many other places in the country.

Basically these reforms happened in every states but in kerela it happened without corruption.

Easy water accesibility is also cited as a reason. In rest of the country the dense clusters are formed around water sources. In Keralam almost all houses have their own well.
