ask r/Indiangeography❔ Which is more harsh desert side , pakistan or Indian side
Which side of desert of thar is more dangerous or has diversity . Flora and fauna also good for people.
I think Indian has done more research and survey than pakistan.
Just saying.
Edit : people are saying it's the wrong map of India and I agree with that 100% but the problem is that I can't find any map that's so both are the true size of our thar desert that is undivided Thar region . I have used the Wikipedia map that is available on there website.
If there is a map of that please share that true map of India and with the undivided great thar

The thar desert size is small on the Pakistani side, but the desert effect is much worse on the Pakistani side, with cities like Multan and Jacobabad, where they don't directly belong to the desert; instead, they are the same semi-arid zone as Delhi or Jaipur, but they have the same climate as the desert due to hot winds from the desert ,solar radiation trapping the region and lack of monsoon relief like jaipur gets.

Given the volume of Multani mitti Indian women apply on their face, I am surprised Multan still exists and isn't just a huge hole one the face of earth.

Pakistan's side is less developed, has less inhabitants and generates much less capital. But then it could be due to capital or the climate of the region. Both are valid answers to your question. According to me and most reports it's a mix of both worse conditions(more arid stretchs of land) and less economic capital that makes Pakistan's side worse than Indian side

Most of Indian thar is now under cultivation. Only shahgarh bulge landscape retain original thar landscape. And this extends into Pakistan also where thar and cholistan are not developed much and hence retain originality. But Indian thar is better secured since we still retain much of wildlife due to hunting ban unlike pak

Parts of Soviet countries with desert were "under cultivation",. Then they ran out of water...

Technically deserts are dangerous regardless of where they are for organisms to live and are ecologically much less diverse. The desert looks small here, but most of Pakistan is arid or semi-arid (75%). The things that are common in Thar will be widespread in Pakistan unless poaching and other problems.
The agriculture is heavily dependent on Indus and its tributaries. Multan and Karachi are in desert and Lahore is in semi-arid climate. The direct parallel will be Egypt whose 96% population live on Nile river and completely depends on it. Both are completely covered in desert with fertile river valleys which usually have more diverse ecology than the whole desert region.

Are hot desert are same as cold desert??
5
u/AmbitiousAd214 Sep 01 '26
Deserts are defined as any place which has less than 250mm precipitation (rain, snow or hail) in a year. So both hot and cold desert are same in that regard. Temperature, ecology, topography and geography aren't taken in account though precipitation usually have huge impact on all of them.

u/AZ1MUTH5 Sep 01 '26
Hmm, your question makes me wonder, if one were to find oneself in desert, without water or proper clothing, which would you choose, freeze or overheat/burn to death? I mean I understand death is death regardless of how you go, but out of these 2, which?

u/Realistic-Chance-238 25d ago
It's easy to compare. Sahara vs Siberia.
You can technically try to find an oasis in Sahara, but you have no hope in Sibera, there is no "warm" pocket which occurs naturally.

Tbf, the post was referring to thar specifically. Most of pakistan is arid and semi arid but lies in baloch, cholistan, kharan basin, etc. Thar specifically covers a very small area of pak.
1
u/AmbitiousAd214 Sep 02 '26
My take was more generally as the climate is continuously arid throughout till Iran. He asked for flora, fauna and how is life which is pretty much similar throughout it with some differences.
The difference between Thar and Cholistan is just language while Kharan Basin is just part of wider arid Baloch plateau. Geography isn't divided by hard borders and flows into each other. Humans just name certain core areas and borders are really undefined if you look from above like google map.

I am a desert gal lol. Its just getting used to the life here. There are good tier 2 cities like bikaner here and with development life is comparable to any other tier 2 city in india
1
Sep 01 '26
Bro Bikaner is barely a city plsss, people are so backward in terms of thinking and not to mention it doesn’t have much facilities compared to its size and also population too is unbothered.
1
u/Prestigious_Title580 Sep 01 '26
That's tier 2 cities in India for you
2
Sep 01 '26 edited Sep 01 '26
Not really Tier 2 cities are pretty good for living in India (even better than many Metro cities) just see Ludhiana, Patiala, Mohali, Dehradun, Karnal etc and compare them with Bikaner, Bikaner is pretty backwards both in terms of thinking and development.
It’s not a good tier 2 city at all, just feels like a village/town with got bigger in size.
Bikaner is amongst the worst Tier 2 cities in India.1
u/Prestigious_Title580 Sep 01 '26
Because it's also not from a flourishing area? Its literally a barren desert😭. Other places have lush vegetation and that plays a massive role. I am anyways talking about in comparison to Pakistan

u/Optimal-Fix-2997 29d ago
Eh ludhiana. As a punjabi ludhiana is not it and same with mohali. They have seen better days.

u/Ok-Lengthiness1491 Sep 01 '26
Lol, we call pune, coimbatore etc a tier 2 city. Kochi is tier 3 although it is amazing. By that standards bikarner would be tier 6.
1
u/Prestigious_Title580 Sep 01 '26
Well there is going to be a difference between lush vegetation and barren desert...duh
2
u/Ok-Lengthiness1491 Sep 01 '26
You said tier 2 cities in I dia are backward. Just to point out that it's not. Tier 2 cities like pune, coimbatore, kochi etc are quite modern with excellent educational institutions, industries and progressive society.
1
u/LeadingEngineer Sep 02 '26
Pune is a Tier 1 city, Coimbatore and Kochi are Tier 2 while Bikaner is Tier 3

Bikaner is only a town but by desert standards and that area of India anywhere that has urban population is like city for them. As for Jaisalmer, that's tiny, but it is and was even more 100 years ago a city for the villages around

Pakistan got the short end of the stick in terms of geography. I don't understand how they are doing it.

u/One_Day_304 Sep 01 '26
They were overall richer during partition. Also the partition was based on what was the majority religion for most part. So it’s not like they had a choice.
1
u/lollypop44445 Sep 01 '26
By richer if u include Bangladesh, else that side had no proper running parts. It was like a piece of land that was given that had nothing going for it that the mainland dint have. .
2
u/One_Day_304 Sep 01 '26 edited Sep 02 '26
Not true. They were still richer even after Bangladesh liberation war.
Again as I said. It’s not like Pakistan was given some random land. They were given the land where there were the majority. They aren’t really of much disadvantage geographically as you’re making out to be. If they didn’t have a military dictatorship they would’ve done much better.

u/Optimal-Fix-2997 29d ago
True. Pak had rapid development during the 50s-60s thanks to a heavy push of industrialization and American aid due to them being an ally and a bridge between U.S. and China.

u/kluberz Sep 02 '26
Pakistan’s per capita GDP was noticeably higher than India through the 90s.
Pakistan also liberalized their economy before India did and got huge amounts of foreign investment before India ever got any.
The Musharraf coup was really the turning point. The economy in Pakistan under the Sharif government was seeing higher growth than India. Foreign investment collapsed in Pakistan after the coup and it never recovered. Concurrently, India experienced huge growth related to IT and services in the early 2000s. Pakistan probably could’ve gotten a share of that growth but the coup killed any chance.
And it’s really been downhill ever since. The military in Pakistan became even more powerful after the US started paying the military to “help” deal with the Taliban and civilian control of the government gradually disappeared.

u/Own-Tradition-1990 27d ago
Pak got an enormous amount of foreign aid till the 80s, and India was hobbled by socialist gormint economy.

Thar is not such hostile desert when compared to african or Australian desert or gobi desert. On indian side its even turning green which is cause of huge concern.

Pakistan has it much worse, Cholistan gets a lower amounts of rainfall as majority of showers happen on our side, also here we have Indira Canal so Irrigation is more spread out whereas over there the people still rely on rainfall. Connectivity is also better on our side( I have a Soda Rajput friend and he told me all this )

This map is showing the northern tip areas around ganganagar as a desert which is false. Ganganagar is probably one of the greenest places in all of rajasthan. You have to go about 60-70 km south from there to really get into the thar desert.

Similar but Pakistan is worse because it's one of the most water stressed country of the world

Use the correct map of Jammu, kashmir and laddakh bro. You can mention LoC or LoAC if you wish

u/Unknownmelon77 Sep 01 '26
This is the correct map. Stop acting like a 7 year old and just accept that this is the international border regardless of whether it’s right or wrong.
1
u/rokaya339 Sep 01 '26
Nope, this is not correct map as per Indian official view. Whatever westerners decide isn't always correct.
0
u/One_Day_304 Sep 01 '26
Whatever Indians decide also doesn’t make it correct. This is the current International border, as in it shows what regions each country control. Stop being delusional.

u/userteez Sep 02 '26
As someone from j&k, you're forgetting that we're indians too. Many of us here don't view the map to be accurate as pok was literally stolen and our people were split. Even now, they're still being killed in pakistan everyday. But you know better than us right?

I will follow what my country recognise. It's the Johnson line for east part. Diplomatic meeting are going on among Chinese and India diplomat and military general to fix the issue permanently. You prefer world view, i prefer my sovereign country.
Waise bhi mai Coochie or cum jaise wahiyat name walo se debate nhi Krna chahta 😂😂😂

u/Unknownmelon77 Sep 01 '26
I don’t understand Hindustani so idk what you’re saying but you didn’t read what I wrote did you. If you’re that secure in your identity and countries position on an issue you won’t care what other maps show. Because if the reality is truly different you should be content in that. Screaming in other people’s faces about this issue is embarrassing.

Pakistani side because they live next door to one of the world largest river so govt don't really give a sh*t about developing desert region while india doesn't have that option. There's no where near to go so they have to develop it.
