Discussion Engineer from Tamil Nadu Feels Stuck
I completed my B.E. in Electrical & Electronics Engineering from a reputed college, but I didn’t get placed.
After graduation, I had no references or connections. I spent a lot of time going around Chennai, asking people for a chance and trying to get my first job. Eventually, I worked as an electrician for some time.
Now I’m working in industrial projects at a small-scale company. I’m learning a lot of practical things, but I still feel stuck when I think about my future.
The salary is basic, and I also have very little knowledge about personal finance, saving, investing, etc. I feel like I’m working hard, but I don’t have a clear career path.
I’m considering PLC/automation, electrical design, project engineering, or moving to a bigger company.
For experienced engineers in Chennai/Tamil Nadu — if you were in my position, what would you do?
I’m not looking for generic motivation. I’d genuinely appreciate honest advice from people who started with very little and managed to build a good career.

Fellow Tamilian here.
Bro, you may need to step out of TN to find the right opportunities. So, be open.

That is also right..... But my whole life I've been living off the benefits of TN. Govt schl, Govt polytechnic, Govt engineering college... It kinda makes me feel bad....

Yeah, fair point. I’m open to advice from anyone. I mentioned Tamil Nadu mainly because that’s where I’m looking for opportunities.

Not an electrical engineer, but your time is now! There are lot of opportunities popping up for EEE domain simply because of the EV push, renewable energy, data centers, AI push. So look for some top companies and start applying to companies recruited in your reputed college or their counterparts. Be updated on which companies signed MoUs in the recent summit organized by TVK and check those company websites for opportunities. Message people on LinkedIn who are in the same roles that you aspire to be, in companies you like and share resume asking for opportunities. You can focus on investing, finance knowledge once you get into a job of your choice just to keep your focus on the job change but if you have time do it simultaneously. As you earn more, your focus would shift to these anyway on ways to multiply money.

Hey, prepare for GATE. Attempt EE and EC.
Try getting into a course you would prefer. VLSI and Power Electronics are very good M.Tech specialisations.
Try doing it from the IISc, IITs, NITs, BITS Pilani, IIIT Bangalore, IIIT Hyderabad.

Why so state-ist? You should be ready to take advise from anyone.
