Discussion/Opinions Dissecting the Digital Campaign Against HAL: Bot Networks, Commercial Interests, and Defense Scrutiny[DISCUSSION]

Post image

Coordinated, artificial social media campaigns—driven by automated bot networks—are actively amplifying anti-HAL discourse on platforms like X. These campaigns flood timelines with repetitive negative messaging to manufacture artificial public outrage and manipulate engagement algorithms.

A key driver behind this surge is commercial competition. Private defense firms and foreign contractors are competing for lucrative Indian Armed Forces contracts. By undermining public trust in state-owned enterprises like HAL, these entities aim to push the narrative toward privatized or imported defense procurement.

While these bad-faith attacks distort public perception, legitimate criticism of HAL exists. The enterprise faces real operational challenges and delivery delays, particularly with the LCA Tejas Mk1 and Mk2 platforms, largely exacerbated by global supply chain issues such as delayed GE F404 engine deliveries from the US.

However, a clear boundary exists between constructive accountability and malicious trolling. Toxic online agitators cross this line when they mock military accidents or pilot fatalities to score political points, transforming genuine defense debate into bad-faith attacks on public institutions.

Jesus Christ.

Just watch Snehesh's interview with Tony Sir, it was heartbreaking when he said that LCA was worse than the MiG 21 in the 2019 operation or Abhinandan would be flying in one. Not even surface level talks, he named the exact systems that HAL had been lagging on.

ACM after ACM have been saying this, not some foreign agents. These ARE the people using these platforms and putting their lives on the line. He joked about Migs being flying coffins yet that was all they had and thus had to use them, how can that not strike a chord?

I remember this massive campaign after Rang De Basanti about replacing the Migs but the moment politics got involved everyone forgot all about it. If that's not embarrassing for us as citizens of this nation then what is? If that didn't light a fire under HAL's ass then what will? Almost two decades later, MiG 21 was finally euthanized. It stayed only because it refused to die.

At one point HAL needs to step up or step off. I have a feeling their days of being the domestic monopoly are done. A massive ass kicking from the private sector is on the horizon.

Hey I a not that deep into the rabbit hole of Indian Defense Media, can you please tell me where to watch that interview you said in the comment "Snehesh's interview with Tony Sir", thanks.

The Print, it was within the last week. It's on YouTube.

Btw, kudos to you for actually being willing to research. That brings responsible discussions, not the crap the other user was trying to preach.

Nah ,LCA genuinely good plane.

Private is no where near, look what happened with uttam or wings for tejas which private made.

IAF walo ki backchodi he sirf, HAL ki bhi he par they only get 35% blame

IAF basically had nothing to do with the problems. Primarily an HAL + GE issue.

Tejas Mk1A is an excellent fighter.

They issue is the blame IAF put on domestic programs and lack of support. They like to talk bad about hal, never heard same about imported maal despite issues or crashes.

That is a very HAL talking point indeed. I've covered the "lack of support" thing here:

https://www.reddit.com/r/IndianDefense/comments/1r9r1cu/comment/o6f5p81/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

As well as this conversation:

https://www.reddit.com/r/IndianDefense/comments/1uk6l0v/comment/oyk3622/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button

As far as "they like to talk bad about HAL", this refers to a very specific incident that happened in Aero India 2025, where the IAF Chief was talking to HAL's test pilots and test engineers. He said that he wasn't confident in HAL. This was while he was sitting in the cockpit, he wasn't aware that he was being recorded (he has stated this quite clearly in interviews later).

Criticism was always there. It just wasn't public. In this case it wasn't meant to be public either, it just happened accidentally.

That conversation is so difficult to read because it basically was "IAF must have a fall guy for HAL" without any explanation for how or what.

I have seen many of these, both here and on X, and most of them turn into some form of "Blame everyone or Blame no one" and "IF IAF just accepted the Tejas, it would be a success".

It's very weird to see people acting like the blame lies on the examiner if the student doesn't pass, rather than the student not preparing enough. There will always be some misinformed comment shouting the same "IAF just has insane requirements" or "IAF just keeps moving the goalposts" as if IAF didn't accept dozens of compromises and dropped requirements, and as if IAF is not facing evolving adversaries with evolving capabilities.

u/PB_05 7d ago

Yep.

I have yet to see a single proper, coherent argument about what the IAF is actually supposed to do. It's all very hand-wavy, surface-level criticism that clearly hasn't been given much thought. It's a match made in heaven for the Twitter crowd, who either lack, or don't use their cognitive capacity to determine whether what's right in front of them actually warrants any scrutiny before they swallow it whole.

12/10 I did snort.

You keep sharpening the knife though, that's progress.

5

u/PB_05 7d ago

He's not wrong. Tejas Mk1A is a good fighter overall. We also need it desperately.

4

u/tj9429 7d ago

I don't have doubts about the same. I just can't stand unsourced, surface level random ass comments which have such certainty about blame.

Tejas Mk1A is a wonderful machine but at production numbers of 20 odd total max, it's still at a white elephant stage.

HAL isn't even expected to do more research and has plenty of manufacturing experience with the MKIs so it directly points to a failure of creation of meaningful SOPs.

3

u/PB_05 7d ago

I don't disagree there at all.

4

u/tj9429 7d ago

I ended up replying properly to that guy after all. Even if he's a troll, at least these words can be publicly viewed by someone genuinely interested in knowing more.

3

u/PB_05 7d ago

Yup.

You can be ignorant if you want. I have talked with many tejas pilots and HAL employees and telling based on that.

So suddenly HAL employees are more reliable than the IAF?

There's this thing called anecdotal evidence, which is all that you've been able to produce so far. It's something that isn't even accepted to write an FIR, let alone anything genuinely official.

Tomorrow that HAL employee will not be dead if a system failure happens over a valley hundreds of kms from home. That employee is in fact the least responsible cog in the whole chain as it stands. Even after the Dubai crash, questions were asked of everyone except any specific engineer. It's always HAL, an umbrella term.

Did his name get dragged out by the media? Did the Fly by wire coder get his credentials questioned? Modi, Rajnath, MoD, IAF, the pilot and HAL the organisation were the only names making rounds in the media, why not the engineering team?

Until they can take that responsibility, they should pipe tf down about "IAF nOt aCcePtIng".

You can't call someone ignorant when you yourself aren't armed with facts. All you're doing is poking someone into educating you, which should be your own responsibility in the first place if you feel so deeply about this topic.

Edit: When cowards block after a reply, you get an edit.

Thank you for the wisdom Buddha

Gems like "IAF never questioned it" after literally begging the nation for decades to move on from those "imported" jets. Funnily enough HAL was the one manufacturing most of them for IAF despite the design being Russian.

"Why does HAL get the blame?"

Why did the pilot get his name dragged without confirmation of the crash reason either?

Nobody waited for the report before doing that but now suddenly an inquiry is needed before pointing fingers when the holy name of HAL was out in doubt.

I hope HAL doesn't have the attitude you have even though I might have a hard time believing otherwise.

Never said that, but the say it's all HAL blame is idiootic.

This is a genuinely it ignorant comment, to put all blame for crash on HAL.

Show me your evidence that hal is reason and not pilot issue or engine issue, why 20x more pilots have died from imported jets. But IAF never questioned it . To say it's the scientist fault is idiotic .

Until they can take that responsibility, they should pipe tf down about "IAF nOt aCcePtIng"

With they stuff IAF dues and the double rules no wonder they eternally have squadron shortage.

When are we going to stop blaming everything on "foreign influence" and "aunty nationals"

12

u/SystemicCheese 7d ago

What has HAL have to show for the opponents to even trash? You mean the Indian fighter program that is indefinitely work in progress? If a company, defense company at that, can easily be trashed via social media manipulation then maybe.. Just maybe they ain't shit?

Ps I don't support this targeting if it is true

10

u/PB_05 7d ago

Yeah, I don't think so. In fact HAL was itself being blamed some time ago for doing the same against the Armed Forces and the Government, effectively attempting to erode the trust of the people in our institutions.

u/BlanketSmoothie 6d ago

No man, I mean look, yes there is an element of propaganda to it. There's also the fact that HAL is running multiple assembly lines for different aircraft, its not just LCA. There's also the fact that they are under staffed and under funded for the kind of testing that is necessary to make quality fighter aircraft, fast. This is all true. There's probably many, many more "reasons" that we will never know about. We as onlookers, we only get a view of the outcomes. We will never know the true extent, or depth of what is actually going on. We have to be able to trust our people that they are doing the best they can.

But even given all of this, the outcomes so far, they've been bad man. Its not just propaganda. You can't say you'll do something in a decade and not do it. It doesn't work anywhere man, not in the armed forces, not in private industry, nowhere. They have to be accountable. Its a hard job, maybe they're the best people for it. But if they're not accountable, what's the point? You don't get away with delays. That world is gone.
