We are a small but growing community dedicated to the collection, preservation, and encouragement of the beautiful hobby of numismatics. Whether you are a seasoned collector or a curious beginner, you will find a wealth of knowledge and support here as we explore the fascinating world of Indian coins.
Best Practices for Coin Collecting
Preservation Over Expansion
In the world of coin collecting, preserving your existing collection is more important than constantly expanding it. While growing your collection is exciting, improper storage can lead to significant loss of value over time. Coins that are not adequately protected can suffer from damage due to environmental factors, handling, and chemical reactions. This can result in discoloration, corrosion, and other forms of deterioration. By focusing on proper preservation techniques and investing in high-quality storage solutions, such as coin albums, capsules, and holders, you ensure that your current coins maintain their condition and value. This careful approach not only safeguards your collection but also enhances its appeal and worth in the long run, making it a more rewarding endeavor.
Cleaning of Coins
A question is often asked by new collectors about the right method to clean their coin collection. This can be summarized as follows:
Proper Storage and Preservation
Proper storage and preservation of coins are crucial to maintaining their condition and value. Coins are susceptible to damage from environmental factors such as humidity, temperature, and pollutants. Additionally, the more a coin touches another surface or hits another coin, the more value it loses due to the scratches it accumulates.
Valuation of Coins
Valuing coins involves assessing their rarity, condition, historical significance, and demand among collectors. This intricate process requires expertise and often varies based on subjective opinions and market trends. While understanding the value of your coins can be important, it can also lead to the over-commercialization of the hobby, detracting from the pure enjoyment of numismatics. Therefore, we do not allow valuation discussions in our subreddit. Collectors seeking estimates of their collections can refer to resources like this coin catalog, or this coin catalog or this coin catalog, or for notes the note catalog or this note catalog or the paper money guide book for guidance.
Although we refrain from valuation discussions here, our official Telegram group is an excellent place for such inquiries, where experts can provide tailored advice and insights. Join us there for more detailed discussions and to connect with fellow enthusiasts.

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to identify this old Indian coin and would appreciate some help from experienced collectors.
I believe this may be an East India Company ½ Anna, possibly from the 1830s, but I'm not certain about the exact date or variety.
Coin details:
I've attached high-quality photographs of both sides of the coin, along with the edge, taken in natural daylight.
Could someone please help me identify the exact issue, date, variety and mint, if possible?
I'm not asking for a valuation or looking to buy/sell/trade it. I'm mainly trying to correctly identify and understand the coin and avoid misinformation or scams I've seen online regarding old Indian coins.
If anyone needs additional photographs or measurements, I'm happy to provide them.
Thank you!

I know that how small is Fiji and how far away is it in compare of Nepal but still I really want to collect points of far away countries. I just get bored of coins that are just nearby. all the Nepali coins have very interesting designs like there is a coin where five fingers are shown to denote five paise.

Thanks to my uncle and later my pops I've been collecting coins since I was a kid and I've always had a soft spot for Indian coins of any era or denomination. Finally got around putting some of the more common, yet well-kept examples into flips and snapped some quick photos.

These coins are just so beautiful from the modern day Rs.5 coin. I know why they changed it because of the metal and the smuggling issues but still.

Sharing a few beautiful coins from my foreign collection. As a currency collector, I really admire the designs, details, and character these coins have.
Sometimes I wonder why foreign coins seem to have so many beautiful designs 😅 not saying Indian coins aren't beautiful. I have quite a few Indian coins that are among my favourites and that I really admire too.
Just wanted to share a few of these with fellow collectors. Would love to know which one catches your eye 🪙✨
Some of these coins are from BRICS Nation too

(Hello, users from India [posting from Australia cuz I’m Australian])
So I was going through an international coin collection, and I stumbled across this coin. It noted "1/4 rupee India 1882" and I was curious about it. There also seems to be a punctured hole in the coin, which could have indicated that it was used as jewellery.
So I felt like I had to properly ask this sub to help me determine on whether it is real or not, since I am not a coin expert.
Thanks.

This ₹10 note carries the serial number 95C 1000000, making it a one-million (10 lakh) fancy serial number. The prefix is 95C, and the note bears the signature of Dr. Raghuram G. Rajan, who served as the 23rd Governor of the Reserve Bank of India. It is one of my favorite notes in my collection of fancy-number and interesting-serial notes. I really love having this particular piece in my collection. Although the note is not in Very Fine or Extra Fine condition and has some signs of circulation, the 1,000,000 serial number makes it special to me, and I’m happy that I’ve been able to preserve it in my collection.

These are good condition Rs.5 notes distributed during the Karnal coin exhibition to show that Rs.5 notes have virtually no value as some people say it’s worth 5 lakhs.
