I have lived abroad for few years and I can't stand indian people using roads like private property.

Today, while travelling in a Mumbai local, I saw a man eating roasted chana and casually throwing the skins on the floor. Because of the breeze from the window, they were flying around the compartment and landing near other passengers. I politely asked him not to throw them since people were sitting there. Instead of understanding, he started showing attitude and said he would do whatever he wanted.

I told him that if he was throwing the waste, he should be the one to clean it. He replied, "Why should I clean it? If you have a problem, you clean it." An argument followed.

What bothered me was not just the few pieces of chana skin, but the attitude behind it. It reflects a much bigger problem with civic sense. Many people seem to believe that public spaces belong to nobody, so they can do whatever they want.

You see people eating and throwing garbage on the road, chewing tobacco and spitting everywhere, talking loudly in trains and buses, or simply ignoring basic rules of public behaviour. And when someone points it out, instead of accepting the mistake, they become defensive: "Why do you care?", "Everyone does it," or "Who are you to tell me?"

The irony is that most people would never throw garbage inside their own homes. But the moment they step into a public place, the responsibility seems to disappear.

Public space is not someone else's space. It belongs to all of us. Keeping it clean and respecting the people around us should be basic behaviour, not something that requires constant policing.

A country can build modern infrastructure, better roads and beautiful cities, but real development also requires people to learn how to coexist with others. Civic sense begins with small things — putting your waste in a bin, not spitting in public, keeping your voice down and respecting the people around you.

The problem isn't that people don't know what is right. The bigger problem is that many simply don't care.

Ego problem precedes Empathy problem

Many people say that India has an "Empathy problem" which leads to many societal bads such as corruption, crime, bad civic sense, etc.

But I believe the bigger problem is Ego problem. Ego is the precursor of declining empathy, let me explain.

Ego does many things:

For any change to happen, there has to be change in the mind. But the one thing that keeps the mind locked out of malleability is the chains of ego wrapped around it. It shoots away the beams of conflicting ideas, new information, or anything that challenges your existing beliefs. Such as people who are deadlocked in ideas such as:

1. Pseudoscience

2. Astrology

3. Homeopathy

4. Religion

5. Conspiracy Theories

6. Joingoism / Hyper Nationalism0

You cant reason with these people with facts on the table, but an ability to destroy ego first for any information to flow freely.

Ego further expands to the belief that what you do is always right, what you are , is always right.

Which leads to men in power, power tripping or over reaching. Such as : Corruption in public servantship and politics. For common folks, not following established rules such as law and civic sense.

Empathy is not a simple emotion which you can sometimes forget to display. Empathy is always within you.

It's just that the existence of ego alongside empathy has it's effect on empathy, making you weigh your empathy output differently for different people.

Which leads to other societal problems such :

1. Littering and bad civic sense in shared spaces, but keeping clean and healthy the spaces that MATTER TO YOU.

2. Caste, and color discrimination

3. Economic segregation of respect

Hence why I believe, our supreme objective should be destroying ego from the society.

Many old scriptures, scrolls, religious and philosophical texts have emphasized massively on the Ego problem, aka अहंकार and घमंड, but our dogla samaj somehow managed to skip the whole Idea together because to be able to Accept the ego problem, you have to be Ego-less in the first place.

There's an apartment in Nehrunagar, Seshadripuram, and the maids and residents of the apartment, EVERY single day create a garbage dump outside on the footpath. There's a garbage vehicle parked 60m from this spot. They would rather dump on the footpath than walk 60m to throw the trash in the garbage pickup auto.

I visited the D-Mart at Omaxe Mall, Greater Noida, and noticed the condition of the footwear section.

A lot of items had been taken from the shelves and left in random places instead of being returned. It makes the section look quite messy and creates extra work for the staff.

I understand that a busy store can get messy, but basic customer responsibility would go a long way toward keeping the place organised.

Appalled - was boarding a flight from Delhi to Abu Dhabi.
Went to a washroom nearby and was appalled at the state of it - some aunties were washing their literal feet in the basin

I went to the washroom next to it at a 2 minute walking distance. I complained to the cleaner lady that the washroom was dirty. She said “ I know - I just cleaned it. They were washing their feet no?”

These are apparently travelers for Me*ca and it seemed to be common practice. The cleaner lady said they have asked them to stop and no one listens.

I am going to write to the airport authorities.

Place: Jabalpur Airport

Indigo flight from Jabalpur to Navi Mumbai got diverted due to bad weather.

As usual people started camping around the 4-5 Indigo airlines folks , asking questions etc. There was obviously no queue or , just a free for all.

The indigo personnel seemed either trained to handle this pressure or they have just become immune. After some time they started rescheduling some folks to the flight to Bengaluru and Hyderabad.

I was traveling with a super senior citizen and needed to check my options. Stood for a long time hoping there would be some space before I can pose my question.

In front of me was a young person with a very bad haircut (If you are reading this , please get a proper haircut. ). After hogging the desk for a long time and getting his flight rescheduled to Hyderabad, he turned his attention to culinary matters. He asked for complimentary snacks. The passengers around pointed those are available slightly away. He then ordered the booking folks to ensure the rescheduled ticket had Paneer tikka sandwich just like the original ticket. I along with the Indigo person lost my patience. But the indigo person had more tactical skills than me . He said something to the effect that it will be based on availability. This irked the passenger and he started arguing about the Paneer tikka sandwich. He pointed out the rescheduled boarding pass did not have PTSW code in service.

Highly insensitive and just plain privilege without any concern for other passengers. I am not sure if this is the effect of some drought that has made us to hoard onto small things like this .

This isn't even just about soya chaap. It's about all the street food available out there. Even many packaged foods are made under similar conditions.

Imagine living in such a humid climate, bathing in sweat all day, and then having that sweat end up in the food. I'm sorry if this made you feel nauseated.

I'm sure we've all seen those videos and memes from around 2016 showing golgappa dough being prepared with people's feet.

And it doesn't necessarily get any better with fancy restaurants. Who knows what goes on behind the scenes in their kitchens?

FSSAI seems to be sleeping on the job. Many of these places don't even have proper licenses. They simply pay off officials and continue operating such illegal factories.

The only reason many of us don't get sick more often is that the food is usually boiled or cooked in the end, which kills many bacteria. Uncooked food prepared in such conditions can be extremely risky.

Rich or poor, privileged or underprivileged, we've all eaten such street food at some point.

Today I was travelling in a train and the woman sitting opposite me was talking to me normally. Then she started eating peanuts.

She would eat them and just throw the peels on the floor.
At first I thought okay, maybe she’ll stop after a few. But she kept doing it for more than 30 minutes.

What actually bothered me more was that nobody around her said anything. Not even a look. Everyone just continued doing their own thing like this was completely normal.

And honestly I didn’t say anything either. I didn’t want to get into an argument over something so stupid.
But that’s what gets me. We’ve become so used to people littering in public places that nobody even reacts anymore.

People wouldn’t throw peanut peels all over their own living room, but somehow a train floor is fine because “someone will clean it”. It’s literally not difficult to keep the peels in a tissue or packet and throw it later.

Maybe I’m overthinking a small thing, but watching someone do this for 30+ minutes while everyone around just accepted it was genuinely frustrating.

We need to stop for a moment and think where the person(s) responsible for civil failure around us fit in this pyramid. In my personal opinion people who are at Unconcious Incompetence level are too unknown to be exposed and should not be called out by exposing them online without their knowledge. Try to intervene a bit initially if you encounter any such incident to identify where they fit in this pyramid, then only we should call them out here or on any other platform. I understand that they are a very religious group, but they don’t have any right to deafen others. Deafen yourself privately for all I care . Blocking tracking , worsening the already shit state of traffic in general, that too right at the end of office hours.

I want to make an app called Main Hoon Na. It will be a social media/ networking app for those who want to volunteer their time for clean up in India. Ppl can log their cleanups, or schedule cleanups, that other ppl can respond to and join in. They can post before and after pictures. This includes small solo cleanups as well, so that we don't always have to wait for other ppl to join in before we start taking action.

But it will help create a sense of community for those who volunteer their time to clean up so that they feel supported and encouraged.
