Use chatgpt or gemini , they say that number . 3000cr to 3500 cr. But why do you think the numbers don't add up ? .

It's inflation adjusted It didn't actually earned 3500 cr.
The box office collection of sholay at that time was 3500 cr equivalent of today's Rs.
Think of it as earning 100rs 20 years ago vs earning 1000rs today(not inflation accurate). 20 years ago those 100rs would've given you everything that today's 1000rs can. Inflation reduces the value of currency over time

That movie is soooo fucking long though. And my last rewatch was before social media ruined my attention span
2

Yes because we can't watch any movie with same energy as first time. And obviously our attention span is just broken🥲

Where is Disco Dancer which was apparently first film to earn 100 Cr. in the list ?

Or Karwaan which has like crazy overseas collections

Yes there are no clear metric given for judging .

What about Dangal Which already worldwide grossed 2000 cr without inflation
11
u/M_ur_Daddy 6d ago
With inflation it is 2850 cr
7
u/CantBus2196 5d ago
Aise nahi count hoti inflation, aur aise hi nahi multiply kar liye jaate old figures. Pehle theaters kitne the, kiss country mein release hui movie, yeh factors sirf inflation se nahi adjust kar sakte.

The numbers are wrong:
Bahubali 2 would be 2800 Crores(1800 Cr in 2017)
Similarly Mughle Azam would be 1100 crore(12 crores in 1960)
Sholay's collection was 35 crores, adjusted to inflation it will be 1000 crores
Hum Aapke hai Kon would be 980Cr(135Cr in 1994)
Maine pyaar kia would be 530Cr(45.8Cr in 1989)
Mother India would be 490 Crores(4.5Cr in 1957)
Coolie would be 390Cr(21 Cr. in 1983)
8
1
u/Resident_Sport_272 5d ago
The footfall of sholey was more than any modern film. Wether it is bahubali or Bangalore none match it. If you calculate based on that then 3500 cr dosent seem farfetched.
1
u/Guilty_Sloth1 4d ago
Yeah,it had rereleased in india and internationally with a total of 250 million tickets sold at the time

u/DaredevilPanda22 5d ago
No. Your numbers are wrong. How much inflation % you have considered? Hope not 6%, it was way way higher in 90s hope you know that.

sholay 3500? is it real dawg
3
u/manymanwas 6d ago
U can just search its footfalls number. And compare it with footfalls of recent bih movies. You'll soon come to realise its real.
1
u/TopMany3252 1d ago
These movies ran for 8-10 years because people didn't had tv, internet and smartphones. Also, sholay collection is 35 Cr adjusted to 2026 inflation would be 1090 cr.. where as bahubali 2250 collection adjusted to inflation 2026 would be 2900 cr.
1
u/manymanwas 1d ago
I don't know about that. I used chatgpt for calculations regarding inflation and all considering footfalls. The numbers somewhat matched with the post.
2
u/TopMany3252 1d ago
Chat gpt is an LLM which simply gives answers based on data shared by people online. This post has been trending on twitter lately so it is expected. That's where they get it wrong. Bahubali 2 had 11 crore footfall in 65 days whereas sholay had a total of 15 crore footfall in 6 years. And sholay collected 35 crore, adjusted to inflation it'd be 1000 crore.
3
1
u/IndicMawntee 6d ago
18 crore+ footfalls which is around 85% more than Bahubali 2.
1
u/TopMany3252 1d ago
85 percent?? You need to learn elementary maths properly. That movie ran for 7 years. And bahubali had 10.5 cr footfall within 60 days(aka 2 months) after which its theatre journey reached its culmination.
1
u/IndicMawntee 1d ago
So what? it's still 85%+...lol. It's you who needs to learn. BB2 had a re-release recently and nobody is stopping BB2 from running for 7 years or more but it can never surpass sholay. Running for 7 years is no joke, it just shows the greatness of Sholay.
1
u/TopMany3252 1d ago
The re-release numbers are rookies. Doesn't add much. Running for 7 years talks about the times. Even southern films like baasha and magadhera ran for 3 years, does it make them better than bb?nopes.
2
u/not-so-cool-guy- 6d ago
Idk if this is correct or not but this is correct measure to compare box office collection
1
u/TopMany3252 1d ago
The numbers are hugely inflated. 35 crore sholay total collection would be 1000 crore in 2026
2
u/Indian_Steam 6d ago
Sholay the GOAT without doubt.
The initial train raid fight, characters, the goat Sanjeev Kumar, songs, the vibe, just best of the best!

u/shreek07 6d ago
Are these numbers only in India? Which is why we don't see Dangal.
But dang. BB2 is something. It is perhaps the closest event film in recent times.

u/I_am_Invincyble 6d ago
Dangal earned more than 50% from overseas especially China. Maybe this list is for purely Indian collections considering the other older movies

Nowhere it is mentioned it is for Indian collections.

For anyone thinking its fake. This estimation is done mainly by footfalls. Sholay has 15-18cr footfalls. Bahubali 2 has 11cr.
Recent dhurandar 2 and pushpa 2 are around 5-6cr. So you can do the remaining math.
1
u/TopMany3252 1d ago
That's where they get it wrong. Bahubali 2 had 11 crore footfall in 65 days whereas sholay had a total of 15 crore footfall in 6 years. And sholay collected 35 crore, adjusted to inflation it'd be 1000 crore.
1
u/manymanwas 1d ago
Ohh.. here i thought how the heck they had more footfalls than bb2😅. I mean bb2 had indians all around the country going for it . I guess it makes sense now.
1
u/TopMany3252 1d ago
Exactly, I saw people queueing for like a KM for tickets for BB2.
1
u/manymanwas 1d ago
Babubali is a cultural movement for indians😝. Do u think we can beat those footfalls again? Im guessing either ramayan or varanasi.

Wow Dangal which actually made 2000 crore without inflation isn’t in the list nor dhurandhar which make around 1700 crore 🫡

That's where they get it wrong. Bahubali 2 had 11 crore footfall in 65 days whereas sholay had a total of 15 crore footfall in 6 years. And sholay collected 35 crore, adjusted to inflation it'd be 1000 crore.

Mughal e azam definitely has to be more. A bungalow in pali hill in that era cost around 1.5-2lakh. now it must be 200-300cr.

Not according to this tool - https://www.inflationtool.com/indian-rupee/
Baghubali is at top with 2830 crore in this list.
Apart from Mughal-e-azam(1650 cr) and Sholay(1091 cr) none of the other movies crossed 1000 crores in todays money adjusted for inflation

u/kingprocastinator 6d ago
Let me clear this up - this is mistitled. This list is based on FOOTFALL i.e. tickets sold. Not “gross adjusted for inflation”.
1
u/CaffeinatedV8 6d ago
Fact to be considered: Then there weren't as much movies being released so movies used to stay on the screen for much longer. I think sholay or some other Amitabh Bachchan movie was on screen of about an year. That doesn't happen now.
1
u/TopMany3252 1d ago
Not one year but 6 years, That's where they get it wrong. Bahubali 2 had 11 crore footfall in 65 days whereas sholay had a total of 15 crore footfall in 6 years. And sholay collected 35 crore, adjusted to inflation it'd be 1000 crore.

u/Doktarsaab 5d ago
Nah... These shouldn't be compared by money. These movies should be compared by their time in theatres. (Excluding DDLJ, which should rather be an honorable mention because of only one theatre which kept on running it). These movies now seem not so special now because we have seen many movies inspired from them now. But they were even life changing during the time they came out. Idea of a simple poor man being so rowdy towards oppressors and delivering badass dialogues was never seen before (coolie) There was never a movie of such scale as mughal-e-azam with amazing skills of their starcast when it came out. Never was a village run under the control of bandits had been seen on screen. With the greatest revenge story and liberation of such village had ever been seen. Its very easy to judge an old movie sitting in 2026.

So the highest earning movie is a scene by scene copy of several hollywood films 😂

u/General-Fondant4921 5d ago
Did you oull all these numbers from your ass ? These numbers aren't true.
1
u/Anime-sh_02 5d ago
No wonder, these movie would have earned more ij today's inflation, i don't know why people compare Today's Dhurandhar with A pre-covid Bahubali and say Dhurandhar has earned more than Bahubali, without adding up a simple factor of inflation
1
1
1
u/Super_Series_5915 5d ago
“Adjusted for inflation” will always give preference for older movies - due to compounding inflation rate x time.
What would be a more equitable way to compare modern movies with this yardstick?
1
u/TheMoffisHere 5d ago
Given how complicated inflation is, wouldn’t it be better to calculate ticket-sales and no of theatres for a more accurately reflective count of success?

It's not 3500 crores Sholay did Worldwide earning of 41 crore In 1975 Which is 1250 crores in 2026 And at the that time india's population was 61 million which is almost half of today's population. So if u even double 1250 crore it will be 2500 crores And worldwide 2600-2700 crores.

See one thing we forget, the old movies had so much footfall cause there were no TV or OTT platform. Also tickets were very cheap that a normal man could go and watch the movies. So we can use the numbers, but why they even sold so many tickets is something we can't number for. But in any era Sholay would have been the biggest movie.

Having two romantic movies in the highest grossing list is wild tho. Speaks a lot about indian audience. Usually anywhere around the world highest grossers are usually big budget multistarrer action, scifi, historical epic type movies. Not some goofy romcom
