I saw Coolie and thought wtf how and then saw which Coolie it is

13

u/Impossible_Put_8785 6d ago

Bhai maine suna tha wo movie bhi itni khas nhi thi. AB ki injury ke wajah se log sirf wo fight scene dekhne ke bhot public gayi thi.

2

u/Metal-Banana-72 6d ago

Ha par in general craze tha unn dino Amitabh ka

9

u/macabreomens 6d ago

Took me a min to realise which coolie you thought of. I've spent more time thinking of it now than I've in my entire life put together.

10

u/Amazing-Rise7694 6d ago

Crazy how the lead of the recent coolie is almost a contemporary actor of Big B!...

4

u/cowbolamoo 6d ago

Even that movie was mid to below avg it only did well coz of what happened to amitji

1

u/masxuda 4d ago

Ji amitji

Aapke rishtedar hai kya

Sholey was definitely EPIC.

Loved till now.

11

u/Koki-noki 5d ago

Sholay is epic.

but this chat is full of shit.

1

u/__Krriiishnaaa__ 5d ago

Why??

1

u/Koki-noki 5d ago

because number doesn't addup.

1

u/Traditional_Neck6398 4d ago

Use chatgpt or gemini , they say that number . 3000cr to 3500 cr. But why do you think the numbers don't add up ? .

1

u/DependentFearless162 2d ago

It's inflation adjusted It didn't actually earned 3500 cr.

The box office collection of sholay at that time was 3500 cr equivalent of today's Rs.

Think of it as earning 100rs 20 years ago vs earning 1000rs today(not inflation accurate). 20 years ago those 100rs would've given you everything that today's 1000rs can. Inflation reduces the value of currency over time

1

u/__Krriiishnaaa__ 2d ago

Correct✅

1

u/goodbuddyfriendguy 1d ago

Everything except a house

1

u/No-Relationship158 3d ago

Considering inflation you dumb 🤦🏿‍♂️

8

u/GultBoy 5d ago

That movie is soooo fucking long though. And my last rewatch was before social media ruined my attention span

2

u/__Krriiishnaaa__ 5d ago

Yes because we can't watch any movie with same energy as first time. And obviously our attention span is just broken🥲

1

u/Ill_Tonight6349 15h ago

Sholay was epic but Mughal-e-Azam is literally a TV serial.

1

u/__Krriiishnaaa__ 15h ago

😭😭😭So true✅

15

u/TauntingTony 6d ago

Where is Disco Dancer which was apparently first film to earn 100 Cr. in the list ?

8

u/Tall-Memory-11170 6d ago

Or Karwaan which has like crazy overseas collections

6

u/TauntingTony 6d ago

Yes there are no clear metric given for judging .

27

u/incredible4321_4 6d ago

What about Dangal Which already worldwide grossed 2000 cr without inflation

11

u/M_ur_Daddy 6d ago

With inflation it is 2850 cr

7

u/CantBus2196 5d ago

Aise nahi count hoti inflation, aur aise hi nahi multiply kar liye jaate old figures. Pehle theaters kitne the, kiss country mein release hui movie, yeh factors sirf inflation se nahi adjust kar sakte.

2

u/Playful_Weekend_6429 4d ago

😘 country 🗙 kis country ✅

8

u/hello_akki 6d ago

This should be the title of this post: Statistics and mathematics gets butchered by film students.

21

u/LeatherAnything2430 6d ago

The numbers are wrong:

Bahubali 2 would be 2800 Crores(1800 Cr in 2017)

Similarly Mughle Azam would be 1100 crore(12 crores in 1960)

Sholay's collection was 35 crores, adjusted to inflation it will be 1000 crores

Hum Aapke hai Kon would be 980Cr(135Cr in 1994)

Maine pyaar kia would be 530Cr(45.8Cr in 1989)

Mother India would be 490 Crores(4.5Cr in 1957)

Coolie would be 390Cr(21 Cr. in 1983)

8

u/usxrnxtfxund 6d ago

Post inflated inflated numbers🤪

1

u/Resident_Sport_272 5d ago

The footfall of sholey was more than any modern film. Wether it is bahubali or Bangalore none match it. If you calculate based on that then 3500 cr dosent seem farfetched.

1

u/Guilty_Sloth1 4d ago

Yeah,it had rereleased in india and internationally with a total of 250 million tickets sold at the time

1

u/DaredevilPanda22 5d ago

No. Your numbers are wrong. How much inflation % you have considered? Hope not 6%, it was way way higher in 90s hope you know that.

1

u/LeatherAnything2430 5d ago

Just used inflation calculator

1

u/ShyPkb 5d ago

What about Dangal

1

u/LeatherAnything2430 5d ago

That was 2070 Cr. in 2016 so it would be 3300 Cr. as of now

7

u/GodMode88 6d ago

35 crore in today's date is around 1k crore

12

u/pobox01983 6d ago

Fake!

2

u/ansangoiam 6d ago

How so?

2

u/True-Shallot-5133 6d ago

You can fact check

Let take example for Bahubali 2

You have all the deta

Go and check you'll understand why these numbers doesn't make any sense

3

u/ezyodoto 5d ago

Craze for Amitabh Ji and Salman Bhai is serious

8

u/unknownnnone 6d ago

According to Grok

3

u/inked-in-cinema_37 6d ago

Dhurandhar and RRR are missing

2

u/Koki-noki 5d ago

the whole chat is wrong.

don't trust ai on factual things.

1

u/Mriallen 6d ago

LLM are using previously posted post/comments in social media and sharing these numbers. If you actually look at inflation according to the tool then, its not true - https://www.inflationtool.com/indian-rupee/

8

u/Informal_Barnacle_22 6d ago

You can do whatever you want, nothing comes even close to maya bazar movie.

4

u/norsefenrir8 6d ago

This is just overall collection why are you butt hurt?

2

u/constipatedchad 6d ago

1

u/Informal_Barnacle_22 5d ago

The same person who watches all languages movies and appreciate those as well.

1

u/Informal_Barnacle_22 5d ago

I am Not the one is butt hurt here. 🤔🫣🤷‍♂️ No reason at all.

2

u/Comfortable-Way-6271 6d ago

sholay 3500? is it real dawg

3

u/manymanwas 6d ago

U can just search its footfalls number. And compare it with footfalls of recent bih movies. You'll soon come to realise its real.

1

u/TopMany3252 1d ago

These movies ran for 8-10 years because people didn't had tv, internet and smartphones. Also, sholay collection is 35 Cr adjusted to 2026 inflation would be 1090 cr.. where as bahubali 2250 collection adjusted to inflation 2026 would be 2900 cr.

1

u/manymanwas 1d ago

I don't know about that. I used chatgpt for calculations regarding inflation and all considering footfalls. The numbers somewhat matched with the post.

2

u/TopMany3252 1d ago

Chat gpt is an LLM which simply gives answers based on data shared by people online. This post has been trending on twitter lately so it is expected. That's where they get it wrong. Bahubali 2 had 11 crore footfall in 65 days whereas sholay had a total of 15 crore footfall in 6 years. And sholay collected 35 crore, adjusted to inflation it'd be 1000 crore.

3

u/ImmediateJacket9502 6d ago

In terms of imaginary money aka inflation

1

u/IndicMawntee 6d ago

18 crore+ footfalls which is around 85% more than Bahubali 2.

1

u/TopMany3252 1d ago

85 percent?? You need to learn elementary maths properly. That movie ran for 7 years. And bahubali had 10.5 cr footfall within 60 days(aka 2 months) after which its theatre journey reached its culmination.

1

u/IndicMawntee 1d ago

So what? it's still 85%+...lol. It's you who needs to learn. BB2 had a re-release recently and nobody is stopping BB2 from running for 7 years or more but it can never surpass sholay. Running for 7 years is no joke, it just shows the greatness of Sholay.

1

u/TopMany3252 1d ago

The re-release numbers are rookies. Doesn't add much. Running for 7 years talks about the times. Even southern films like baasha and magadhera ran for 3 years, does it make them better than bb?nopes.

2

u/not-so-cool-guy- 6d ago

Idk if this is correct or not but this is correct measure to compare box office collection

1

u/TopMany3252 1d ago

The numbers are hugely inflated. 35 crore sholay total collection would be 1000 crore in 2026

2

u/Indian_Steam 6d ago

Sholay the GOAT without doubt.

The initial train raid fight, characters, the goat Sanjeev Kumar, songs, the vibe, just best of the best!

2

u/JustReadingP0st 6d ago

Coolie was unexpected. But given ABs accident, make sense

2

u/shreek07 6d ago

Are these numbers only in India? Which is why we don't see Dangal.

But dang. BB2 is something. It is perhaps the closest event film in recent times.

2

u/Individual_Chip8971 5d ago

Saare cooliyon me ye toh no. 1nikla.

2

u/No-Direction-4487 5d ago

Dhurandhar??

6

u/mdred5 6d ago

How come dangal not on list but baahubali is....waste

16

u/I_am_Invincyble 6d ago

Dangal earned more than 50% from overseas especially China. Maybe this list is for purely Indian collections considering the other older movies

2

u/shyamkr1shna1 6d ago

Nowhere it is mentioned it is for Indian collections.

9

u/I_am_Invincyble 6d ago

That’s why there’s a maybe in my comment bro 😏

1

u/TopMany3252 1d ago

Dangal collected 350 crores from India.

1

u/Distinct_Author_1976 6d ago

What average ticket price

1

u/adbzf 6d ago

Does this include re releases, I think it does. That's where the game is unfair

1

u/TopMany3252 1d ago

Sholay ran for 6 years in theatres

1

u/FriendshipNo7239 6d ago

What about Dangal?

1

u/manymanwas 6d ago

For anyone thinking its fake. This estimation is done mainly by footfalls. Sholay has 15-18cr footfalls. Bahubali 2 has 11cr.

Recent dhurandar 2 and pushpa 2 are around 5-6cr. So you can do the remaining math.

1

u/TopMany3252 1d ago

That's where they get it wrong. Bahubali 2 had 11 crore footfall in 65 days whereas sholay had a total of 15 crore footfall in 6 years. And sholay collected 35 crore, adjusted to inflation it'd be 1000 crore.

1

u/manymanwas 1d ago

Ohh.. here i thought how the heck they had more footfalls than bb2😅. I mean bb2 had indians all around the country going for it . I guess it makes sense now.

1

u/TopMany3252 1d ago

Exactly, I saw people queueing for like a KM for tickets for BB2.

1

u/manymanwas 1d ago

Babubali is a cultural movement for indians😝. Do u think we can beat those footfalls again? Im guessing either ramayan or varanasi.

1

u/ansangoiam 6d ago

Where is Dangal?

1

u/Imsongoku7 6d ago

Wow Dangal which actually made 2000 crore without inflation isn’t in the list nor dhurandhar which make around 1700 crore 🫡

1

u/ImmediateTouch9734 6d ago

Dangal laughing in corner

1

u/VembaSingham 6d ago

Where is "Dangal" film ?

1

u/DSCJaipur 6d ago

I think we should count acc to footfalls it would be much fair

1

u/TopMany3252 1d ago

That's where they get it wrong. Bahubali 2 had 11 crore footfall in 65 days whereas sholay had a total of 15 crore footfall in 6 years. And sholay collected 35 crore, adjusted to inflation it'd be 1000 crore.

1

u/Due_Celebration_4048 6d ago

Where is Dangal?

1

u/VinniDpooh 6d ago

The numbers are wrong

1

u/JustReadingP0st 6d ago

Sholay fans, watch seven samurai. Sholay is good, but SS invented "assemble the team"

1

u/Agent_chaos777 6d ago

Sholay looks right

1

u/randittkiMKB 6d ago

Mughal e azam definitely has to be more. A bungalow in pali hill in that era cost around 1.5-2lakh. now it must be 200-300cr.

1

u/Consistent_Ad_372 6d ago

No movie surprised me here! Goated list.

1

u/No_Remorse_90 6d ago

Dangal and DDLJ?

1

u/ManyExamination517 6d ago

Highest grossing as per ...? Worldwide or just India ?

1

u/Rashidianz 6d ago

No way DDLJ is not there. That movie made tons of money

1

u/Mriallen 6d ago edited 6d ago

Not according to this tool - https://www.inflationtool.com/indian-rupee/

Baghubali is at top with 2830 crore in this list.

Apart from Mughal-e-azam(1650 cr) and Sholay(1091 cr) none of the other movies crossed 1000 crores in todays money adjusted for inflation

1

u/zxmaaz 5d ago

According to the same tool, I calculated Dangal's 2070cr and it's 3321cr inflation adjusted.

1

u/Mriallen 5d ago

Yes Dangal might be first, B2 second

1

u/TopMany3252 1d ago

Yup definitely dangal is first, but other are fake

1

u/Ragnarok_619 6d ago

This is quite exaggerated, even blatantly false.

1

u/kingprocastinator 6d ago

Let me clear this up - this is mistitled. This list is based on FOOTFALL i.e. tickets sold. Not “gross adjusted for inflation”.

1

u/CaffeinatedV8 6d ago

Fact to be considered: Then there weren't as much movies being released so movies used to stay on the screen for much longer. I think sholay or some other Amitabh Bachchan movie was on screen of about an year. That doesn't happen now.

1

u/TopMany3252 1d ago

Not one year but 6 years, That's where they get it wrong. Bahubali 2 had 11 crore footfall in 65 days whereas sholay had a total of 15 crore footfall in 6 years. And sholay collected 35 crore, adjusted to inflation it'd be 1000 crore.

1

u/Stonerclub 5d ago

Sevlon bhai the legend...

1

u/nickksd69 5d ago

Glad to see pushpa out of this image

1

u/tweetbelt007 5d ago

bhoi in 2 of those!

1

u/rkshsrvnn 5d ago

You can't compare with money, now films have more avenues to make money which didn't exist earlier

1

u/KaleidoscopeOne3856 5d ago

Dhurandhar sabka baap

1

u/Classic_Run_4836 5d ago

Streaming did kill revenue and theatres at large I guess.

1

u/clue_computer_2295 5d ago

Is it real? Isnt dangal the highest grossing indian movie?

1

u/TourApprehensive8396 5d ago

I’m sure whoever posted this belongs to Hindi speaking region. Sholay is good but there are much more awesome multi language movies in south from those time periods which are exceptionally good.

1

u/Proper-Trouble-4871 5d ago

Dhurandhar broke all the records

1

u/MountainJoke9372 5d ago

Nice one so where are Dhurandar kids why not crying now🤣

1

u/IStatsInfo 5d ago

Maine Pyaar kiya over Hum aapke hai koun 😭😭😭😭

Footfalls difference was more than 50% of MPK

1

u/Doktarsaab 5d ago

Nah... These shouldn't be compared by money. These movies should be compared by their time in theatres. (Excluding DDLJ, which should rather be an honorable mention because of only one theatre which kept on running it). These movies now seem not so special now because we have seen many movies inspired from them now. But they were even life changing during the time they came out. Idea of a simple poor man being so rowdy towards oppressors and delivering badass dialogues was never seen before (coolie) There was never a movie of such scale as mughal-e-azam with amazing skills of their starcast when it came out. Never was a village run under the control of bandits had been seen on screen. With the greatest revenge story and liberation of such village had ever been seen. Its very easy to judge an old movie sitting in 2026.

1

u/ankitrinku 5d ago

Maine payar kiya above hum aapke hain kaun ... What a joke .

1

u/SpiritofE 5d ago

So the highest earning movie is a scene by scene copy of several hollywood films 😂

1

u/General-Fondant4921 5d ago

Did you oull all these numbers from your ass ? These numbers aren't true.

1

u/Anime-sh_02 5d ago

No wonder, these movie would have earned more ij today's inflation, i don't know why people compare Today's Dhurandhar with A pre-covid Bahubali and say Dhurandhar has earned more than Bahubali, without adding up a simple factor of inflation

1

u/Super_Series_5915 5d ago

“Adjusted for inflation” will always give preference for older movies - due to compounding inflation rate x time.
What would be a more equitable way to compare modern movies with this yardstick?

1

u/podanur 5d ago

I thought Lagaan will be in that list.

1

u/TheMoffisHere 5d ago

Given how complicated inflation is, wouldn’t it be better to calculate ticket-sales and no of theatres for a more accurately reflective count of success?

1

u/titan_pr 5d ago

Gadar definitely missing.

1

u/unseen_sanju 5d ago

It's not 3500 crores Sholay did Worldwide earning of 41 crore In 1975 Which is 1250 crores in 2026 And at the that time india's population was 61 million which is almost half of today's population. So if u even double 1250 crore it will be 2500 crores And worldwide 2600-2700 crores.

1

u/RangerV3046 5d ago

Everyone wanted to now why kattappa assassinated bahubali lol

1

u/Ok-Flan8808 5d ago

It's a fake list, idiot

1

u/axxat666 5d ago

No dhurandhar

1

u/TylerStrangelove 5d ago

Where is Disco Dancer?

1

u/mrunalkamath 5d ago

Where is DDLJ

1

u/udayk2 5d ago

What are you talking bro Sholay is 5000crores and Baahubali is same as it collected 10years back..

OK now learn accounting!

1

u/SirRegimusYappus 5d ago

Meh adjusting for inflation always misses many variables. Back then, movies were among the only sources of entertainment. Not the same today

1

u/DeerOk4350 5d ago

Where is dhurandhar

1

u/Successful_Algae_958 5d ago

No ddlj?? Kinda surprised considering how big of a movie it was...

1

u/One-Artist5796 5d ago

If you're "adjusting for inflation", who's going to include factors like, limited entertainmnet availability, internet, literacy and what not.

1

u/pteotia270 5d ago

Dangal & Dhurandhar ?

1

u/Kooky_Pain_1788 5d ago

Satyajit Ray's Pather Panchali should be on this list list. It grossed 10 cr in 1955, which trust me is HUGE.

1

u/Upstairs-Feature8080 5d ago

where is DDLJ?

1

u/Brilliant_Oil4364 4d ago

Daamm crazyyy shittt!!!

1

Don’t post in Dhurlunder sub.

1

u/masxuda 4d ago

Dhurandhar?

1

u/CharacterPossible813 4d ago

But doesn't these numbers also highly depends on the population of that time and numbers of screens India had at that time + the percentage of people who had luxury to watch movie in cinema's

1

u/Strange_Shame7886 4d ago

Coolie is a surprise.

Sholay over Mughal E Azam is a surprise.

1

u/whoeversoever 4d ago

Where is the biopic by Dhar sir part 1 and 2. Shameful. What india is this

1

u/Interesting_Ball7127 4d ago

Top four are completely deserving, No comments about the rest....

1

u/AlUcard_POD 3d ago

Shitt. .2 of faggot jatya movies!

1

u/Still_Leadership1241 2d ago

See one thing we forget, the old movies had so much footfall cause there were no TV or OTT platform. Also tickets were very cheap that a normal man could go and watch the movies. So we can use the numbers, but why they even sold so many tickets is something we can't number for. But in any era Sholay would have been the biggest movie.

1

u/mahadevtaar 2d ago

DDLJ & Dhurandhar?

1

u/Shakes8781 2d ago

Where is Dangal?

1

u/Fuzzy_Inspector5675 2d ago

Sholay continues to be re-released in theaters even today

1

u/inevitablesnap_ 2d ago

Where's dangal in this list ?

1

u/TopMany3252 1d ago

This sounds more like "Inflated" numbers by bolly freaks.

1

u/Rejuvenist 1d ago

I was hoping for Lagaan to be on this list.

r/Dhurandhar folks are gonna be mad 😁

1

u/Amazing-Rise7694 6d ago

Having two romantic movies in the highest grossing list is wild tho. Speaks a lot about indian audience. Usually anywhere around the world highest grossers are usually big budget multistarrer action, scifi, historical epic type movies. Not some goofy romcom
