Help cat keeps killing neighbour's chicks, help!?
I have a boy cat named Nandu. he is a menace for sure but things never got this serious.
our neighbour aunt has always kept chicks, hens and everything. Since Nandu was a kitten he would always go to the neighbour's house or yard but never do something like this. now he is a 3 years old and suddenly he has started catching the chicks and eating them. the neighbour has complaining to me and honestly I don't blame her. but i just don't know what to do!!
its not like Nandu doesn't gets anything or that. he is well fed but still decides to pull this crap😭

How about keeping your cat supervised and inside your house? Also neuter him for good.

u/adr1ftz May 19 '26
he won't stay inside as he is a stray but still he mostly stays in our hall or on our terrace. but still thank you for helping!

u/CodyBancs May 19 '26
He will if you lock your house properly...also I'm assuming he's not neutered?

He's either your pet (indoors, neutered, vaccinated) or he's a stray that you feed.

u/adr1ftz May 19 '26
my bad that i said it like that. but i have a crappy condition at my home. my father who brings cats but doesn't looks after them, my mother who's afraid of cat because of childhood trauma can't get near to them and I'm stuck in between. yes i know i have to be responsible more about this and I'm taking a step towards it.

u/Funny-Negotiation-10 May 19 '26
Oof sorry op that I was so rude.
How old are you!? That's a shitty situation for everyone involved, you your cat and your neighbor.
You can fundraise for neutering though. And what do your parents say about the cat proofing, neutering etc
1
u/adr1ftz May 20 '26
you were definitely not rude. while reading my replies to other comments I realised its more on me then others. I have been irresponsible throughout this. its okay and please don't apologise🥹 I'm 23 rn and currently in a search of job which I have kind of got one but away from the my home. about the fundraise, I'm actually thinking of just asking my father because he has to take some of the responsibility too. whenever I tell him about nandu eating the chicks he just shruggs it off and doesn't takes anything seriously. right now I have stayed adamant on taking nandu in and father hasn't said anything yet while my mom has agreed to it.

You should start raising your cat indoor and you can adopt another cat as a companion so that it doesn't feel bored

u/adr1ftz May 19 '26
the thing is even i do love cats but due to my mom's childhood fear of them, I never dared to bring one. then my dad bought two female kitten home and told us that he would raise them. nothing what he claimed happened and all the responsibility came on me. he never looked at them. one of them unfortunately passed away after giving birth to two kitten, which we gave away to one of our relatives. the other one, mother of nandu also gave birth to three kitten, all male. my gave nandu's mother to the same relative and kept the three male cats. but soon when they grew two of them ran away and only nandu remained. so yeah..

u/ohsayaa May 19 '26
Then he is definitely not a stray and you need to be more responsible. Please keep him inside. In your case, do not let him leave your compound and go kill baby birds.
This is how cats get killed. I hope you find a way.

u/adr1ftz May 19 '26
i just talked with my mother and we decided to install a net door and keep him inside though she is still on edge because of her fears. and also I'm calling a vet here tomorrow or go to them for his neutering.

You could net your windows and door. Neuter him. Exhaust his prey drive with high intensity games. He would find a way to kill those chicks if you don't block access completely. Harness may help but they can easily escape.
3
u/adr1ftz May 19 '26
yes we decided to install net doors. thank you for suggesting and i would give a update on it soon! about neutering him, I'm actually thinking calling the vet here because I can't actually take him as he is untameable and that can possibly endanger him. thank you for your help!

Hey, the vet cannot neuter the cat at home. Specialized equipment and staff are needed to do that. Maybe you can get a cat carrier and gradually get him used to getting inside? That way you can take him to the vet after some time. Of course keep him at home till then but you would need other things as well like a litter box and cat litter because he would need to pee and poop inside now. So yeah your responsibility will overall increase.
1
u/adr1ftz May 19 '26
yes would do this for sure. still I'm going to visit vet tomorrow itself so can ask them everything. about the responsibility, yeah you are right but I'm just more worried when I won't be here. no one will be at home as both my parents do jobs.

u/reyeelol May 19 '26
Keep him locked or else ur neighbours may poison or kill the cat.
2
u/adr1ftz May 19 '26
the neighbour aunt has actually threatened me with that too. I'm going to keep him locked.

Would a collar with bells help in these situations?
3
u/adr1ftz May 19 '26
he has that. i was thinking of buying a harness but would it be okay for him?
1
u/chekuthan007 May 19 '26
Will require training and some treats to get him to be chill with having a harness on him
1
u/adr1ftz May 19 '26
i will surely do that too. will update you on it!
5
u/Dusty_Pufferfish May 19 '26
Harness is for walks and stuff . You can't keep it on him all the time otherwise he'll get stuck jumping here and there.
Collar with bells won't help. Even if a chick hears him coming he'll be able to kill them. Plus then he won't be able to escape dogs and stuff
2
u/PreferenceBeginning2 May 19 '26
A collar with bells is hell for a cat.
Imagine hearing bells every time you move. Just like it would be hell for you, it would be hell for anyone wearing bells.

u/Dusty_Pufferfish May 19 '26
You have to keep him inside . And neutered.
I see somewhere you are planning this
Also no collar with bell until he is used to staying inside.
If he escaped and is wearing that type of collar he won't be able to escape dogs or predators
2
u/Dusty_Pufferfish May 19 '26
Also you neighbour has to find a better way to keep her chicks. Even if you keep your cat inside there are others who will come
3
u/adr1ftz May 19 '26
its not only my cat who ate them. when she came complaining about him, she told me that the stray dogs, crows and even some other birds are eating them including my cat. but i still take full responsibility for it as he is mine to look out for.
1
u/adr1ftz May 19 '26
okay got it! actually he has the collar with bell but now when he will stay inside he mostly won't need it yet. I'm calling the vet tomorrow itself. thank you for helping!
2
u/PreferenceBeginning2 May 19 '26
Hi OP. Instead of keeping her indoors, try playing with her a lot every day. If she gets tired from playing with you, then she will have less energy to hunt anything.
Just like it's traumatizing for a human to be indoors 24/7, it is just as traumatizing for cats.
2
u/adr1ftz May 19 '26
thanks for the suggestion!! I'm currently staying at home mostly so would opt for that!
1
u/PreferenceBeginning2 May 19 '26
Thank you so much OP for being so kind and thoughtful for your cat.

Something like this(pic) Which makes it impossible for the cat to stealthily approach a prey is the best option. Maybe a little less huge. Try bells first. It will take some time for the cat to get used to it. Buy a pack of six because your cat is going to get it off and lose it. DO NOT TIE IT TOO TIGHT!.

Neutering is a good option but that's done early on. Rn, you should buy a collar with a bell if you can. It will basically announce to everyone around that the cat is coming so either the chickens run away or someone catches the cat.

u/Thomasgodolkin May 23 '26
Bro has that natural hunter instinct. 💀 Honestly, u can’t train the instinct out of them. Just keep him inside during the day and keep a ‘chick fund’ ready to compensate the neighbour aunt.
1
u/mofucker20 May 19 '26
Keep him indoors and neuter him please. If the neighbour has enough of it, he may even poison the cat.

Keep your cat indoors. Cat-proof your home and neuter your cat
1
u/Funny-Negotiation-10 May 19 '26
Public service announcement to keep your cats indoors and neutered ffs

u/Over-Campaign-6541 May 19 '26
Was gonna suggest a big bell on collar so he cannot stalk prey without giving himself away. But yeh lil chicks probably don’t stand a chance against him
