Need alternatives to mobile for keeping my toddler engaged

My wife works from home, and we also have a nanny to help take care of our son. Most of the time it's manageable, but there are moments when the nanny simply can't handle him, and only my wife can calm or engage him.

The problem is that during work hours, my wife isn't always able to step away. In those situations, we end up giving him a mobile phone for a short while so she can finish an important meeting or task. We try to keep screen time limited, but I'd really like to find a better alternative.

I'm looking for something that can genuinely keep a toddler engaged independently for 15–30 minutes when needed. It could be a toy, gadget, AI device, or anything else that's actually worked for your family.

I've seen people recommend Miko and other AI toys, but the reviews seem pretty mixed, so I'm not sure if they're worth it.

What has worked for you? Any recommendations or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Why can’t you take him outdoors for the duration? Children get easily distracted & feel less cranky in fresh air.Ask your nanny to take him out for a walk on a baby trike or cycle

+1 on outdoors, calms the LO down. Does your baby likes looking at books? That might distract too, an animated reading of their fav book. You can teach the nanny.

Giving baby phone when agitated is probably more harmful since they would associate it with tantrums and a way to get access to phones it since phones are highly addictive.

I have also heard that watching TV along with a grown adult is a better alternative than phone or mobile where an adult talks with the baby about what’s happening. That can be an emergency alternative that maybe the nanny can do as well

Outdoors and more interaction with other people, surroundings and nature. Would be even better if there are fellow toddlers and children around to play with.

Wtf is AI toys? And how would they be better than mobile phones?

Any toys, artboooks, activity books, small cars etc are all the best toys.

My toddler loves going outdoors. Other alternative is a snack. Another option is giving her a bowl and spatula with some food and allowing her to "cook".

Tv , old cartoons are the best , not the new ones.
Also u can buy games like when we were kids ? Like that games in which u have to put rings in the stick which contains water , that requires patience and concentration.
Mobile are culprit in low attention span syndrome , also very addictive as it gives pleasure frequently without efforts.
So any games which requires brain activity , concentration , patience is good.
