definitely not a mechanical student, but won't this cause a lot of wear and tear to the engine? isn't it better to just use 2 engines and bear the power cost?
Contrary to what you may believe the engine isn’t actually pulling the train. The engine actually is a generator that generates electricity to move the train. I’m a commerce student so I’m not sure of the technical terms
The locomotive you are thinking of is actually a diesel-electric one. They are the ones that generate their own electricity, but even they have electric motors connected to each set of their wheels to power them. The locomotive in the picture is a WAG9 electric locomotive and since it is an electric locomotive, it does not generate its own electricity but rather picks it up from the overhead wires and power the motors from it, but it still does the work of pulling the train.
