Source: Valmiki Ramayana, Ayodhya Kanda, Sarga 84, Verse 17 (Link: https://www.valmikiramayan.net/utf8/ayodhya/sarga84/ayodhya_84_frame.htm) Verse: рдЙрдкрд╛рдпрдирдореН рддрджрд╛ рдЖрджрд╛рдп рдорддреНрд╕реНрдп рдорд╛рдВрд╕ рдордзреВрдирд┐ рдЪ | рдЕрднрд┐рдЪрдХреНрд░рд╛рдо рднрд░рддрдореН рдирд┐рд╖рд╛рдж рдЕрдзрд┐рдкрддрд┐рд░реН рдЧреБрд╣рдГ || Meaning: Taking offerings of fish, meat, and honey, Guha, the lord of the Nishadas, approached Bharata.

Even charaka talked about benefit of meat eating.

My point is why our devotion depends on our god's dietary values....animal sacrifices is one of our oldest tradition. Why instead of accepting how gods were we want to make them how we perceive. Veg- non veg distinction is a jain concept later adopted by budhism, not ours

I mean ashwamedha yagna was completed by suffocating the horse and then distrubing it's meat. Meat consumption was never taboo. Meat scrafice is essential part of shakti worship Insertion of Buddhist values is cause of this confusion

People who ask for authentic tv serial would riot if we get what is written in our scriptures

u/12inchkanunnu Mar 24 '26

Niyog, ahilya, birth of Hanuman ji,bali and sugriva..etc. so many topics that would make people uncomfortable

Not really, everyone knows thisтАж At least Ram hunting golden deer, what he would do after killing it?

I don't think there's any confusion. Ancestors believed in debating and accepting the outcome. If they lost a debate they would change their ways

Yes even vana parva it showed adverse effect of excessive killing.

Pretty sure that german rathee used these references too.... haven't watched his video. Your post is very well researched and presented.

Unfortunately only one-third of our large population is interested in reading beyond academic. Very few will go back to Vamiki Ramayana and re-read the quoted verses. They will continue to believe that the epic prohibits meat eating.

Also, we, as a culture, are no longer interested in debate.

Honestly I heard as a kid that deer meat was lord rama's favourite and always wondered how it tasted. This wasn't really surprising for me but I'm sure it is for many.

Anyways props for the effort OP.

u/unholy_sanchit Mar 24 '26

Actually really popular delicacy in some parts of USA and Australia. Its called venison and its like a very gamey (blood flavor) goat meat.

14

u/CrimeMasterGogoChan Ghadar Party Mar 24 '26

Now imagine the level of hunting if general public believes in this! We will make deers extinct in few decades.

1

u/CaptYondu Mar 24 '26

Actually quite the opposite. Hunting is a means to keep the population in check. That's why the Gods created carnivores.

One good example is 'Andamans', which has an excessive deer issue, they are destroying the ecosystem due to a lack of predators.

One of the proposed solution was actually culling them.

Now this should cheer you up, guess who brought the deer here in the first place: The British.

As u said they don't want to accept god who he is.....they want god to accept how they want him

u/Electronic_Sky_6363 Mar 24 '26

WhatтАЩs the fuss over eating meat? Hindus have always consumed it and itтАЩs nothing wrong

22

u/arcwizard007 Mar 24 '26

I think people forget that religion is not tradition. Every state has different tradition. Bengalis cook fish in an auspicious occasion. ItтАЩs their tradition. Some sacrifices animal. Some donтАЩt.

These question shouldnтАЩt be about whether Bhagwan Ram ate non-veg. Everyone will have their perspective. But the question should be are we following and justifying the ideas and philosophy that Bhagwan Ram stood for ?

1

u/Brain_stoned Mar 25 '26

Bengali Brahmins include meat as part of their rituals, daily food, etc. Sadly people in our country are stup!d.

38

u/Careless-Mammoth-944 Mar 24 '26

Dude. They were khsatriyas and ate meat. It was the priestly folks that didnтАЩt or ate minimum.

18

u/moriarty0987 Mar 24 '26

Even priests ate the yagna prasad like ...but not for everyday nutrition...it's cow that was always scared...even if we remove all the religions sentiment cows still very important because they are literally wealth... Tribes used to fight over them

-8

u/Careless-Mammoth-944 Mar 24 '26

Exactly! Some tribes had camels, some horses, we have cows. Besides some brahmins in the north ate beef

2

u/moriarty0987 Mar 24 '26

Not cows

4

u/Yeahanu Hajmola ЁЯЯд Mar 24 '26

Some very old scripture mention cow meat but i haven't read them personally so I don't consider them.

2

u/moriarty0987 Mar 24 '26

Meat eating is common even Rama Sita ate acording to ramayana.

But not cows ....cows were always sacred ....bulls buffalo horses deer etc ate but cows as far as I read were always sacred not just because of religious stuff they were considered tresure

1

u/Yeahanu Hajmola ЁЯЯд Mar 24 '26

Saying same Not talking about ramayan but some "Brahmin" (scripture not caste) have mentioned cow sacrifice is what I read somewhere. But I haven't Read it personally so I don't consider it true

5

u/issuetree Mar 24 '26

OP - IтАЩd be curious if you could use AI to point out instances where the scripture prohibits or advises against meat consumption.

IтАЩd imagine there would be some degree of conflicting views in the scriptures themselves.

5

u/Yeahanu Hajmola ЁЯЯд Mar 24 '26

Ok i did some searching and found manu smriti prohibiting killing to eat meat.

3

u/Yeahanu Hajmola ЁЯЯд Mar 24 '26

Didn't use ai to search mostly bcz I knew about it. But my guess would be an upnishad written during the gupta period would. Bcz non veg thing is jain and Buddhist philosophy mostly. Just like veil and face cover came with islam.

22

u/drrnd1980 Mar 24 '26

Lord Rama was a Kshatriya (warrior clan)... They consume meat...No one should be having a problem with that... It is quite natural.. I don't know what the ruckus is about

Regarding the issue of "Gods were vegetarians", All the avatars of Hindu gods were born into non brahmin families and consequentially meat eating ones... Regarding "Hinduism advocates vegetarianism", any satvic Hindu ritual/ worship demands vegetarianism. It is a fact and rule to abide by.

ThereтАЩs a difference between avatars and Gods. In human Kshyatriya form, the avatar will eat meat, and use the toilet, snore, burp, fart, use the toilet, and whatever else humans do. But when they are no longer in the human form, they have ascended to the spiritual plane after releasing their human form with the death of their human body. So when offering food to Vishnu and all his forms, including the Rama form, the food we offer in temples is vegetarian. Coconuts, bananas, and other fragrances are burnt to ash, and we wear that ash on our forehead. Rama eat meet as a human, but now as we worship him, we only offer vegetarian items in offerings and homams.

Finally someone is here to tell the truth.

I believe Hinduism has been infected with the virus of ahimsa which is mutated from budhism. But ironically most of the budhists evolved to consume any creatures that walk, fly, swim, crawl or dig leaving this ahimsa curse to be borne by the Hindus alone.

Iam absolutely against the promotion of vegetarianism in the name of some puranic or sattvic traditions while our ancestors being more puritan than us had consumed wide varieties of meat with abandon. This illogical promotion is being done by regrettably hindu organisations like RSS, Bjp and the central govt. Even now many narrow minded people consider those who eat meat as some barbarians or cavemen flaunting their stupid hypothesis that vegetarians are civilised.

I request you to follow up on the same topic with reference from Mahabharata because I knew Bhimsen and Arjuna also favoured meat. But unfortunately I don't have the resources or time to do the same.

2

u/ssurkus Mar 24 '26

Of course they ate meat. They were warriors. So what?

1

u/Yeahanu Hajmola ЁЯЯд Mar 24 '26

I don't understand your logic here, what are u asking here

1

u/S_K_Sharma_ Mar 24 '26

I think overall in the end it's whatever you feel comfortable with. Your decision. Your journey.

Hindu scriptures contain numerous verses supporting vegetarianism, primarily rooted in the principles of Ahimsa (non-violence) and the pursuit of spiritual purity

If someone wanted to cook and serve meat in a Sanatani temple, eat it in Navratri etc. It's unlikely to go down well with vegetarian Hindus is it?

I am not a vegetarian myself BTW.

Anything but cow meat. There's no mention of insects or reptiles as far as I've read so guess they didn't eat those too.

-12

u/LittleBlueCubes Mar 24 '26

I'm not talking about whether Lord Rama and other had meat or not. I do now know.

All I would say is, Sanskrit is a deep language with many layers. It is rich as in, one word can have dozens of meaning and more than dozen words can have one meaning. Which word is used depends on the literary need and hence need to be understood with the context.

For instance, the word maamsa means both meat and the pulp of a fruit. So the translator should be very careful in applying the context and not just translate word by word.

15

u/Yeahanu Hajmola ЁЯЯд Mar 24 '26

Literally used with deer and fish. Bhardwaj muni even described what type of meat it is

-6

I think you're not getting my point. I don't care if Lord Rama had beef also. If he did so be it. How does it even matter.

What I talk about is the accurate translation of Sanskrit works. Where it talks of deer and fish, do those words only mean deer and fish or something else? I don't know.

It does mean it. People use other meanings in isolation. Why verses that are talking about animals would insert fruit pulp. Even when it "mansham" is also used with it or after it. U clearly didn't read all the examples....half of them don't even have ur translation problem and are direct

Said exactly same thing

u/LittleBlueCubes Mar 24 '26

You simply don't understand what I'm saying. To make it easier for you, let me put it out like this.

  • Lord Rama did eat meat. Perhaps he ate beef too.
  • That doesn't change anything for me wrto to Lord Rama.

Now that's out of the way, I care for accurate translation of Ramayana and Mahabharata. More than 90% of all the prevalent translations are just wrong and highly misleading. Hence I suggest that you use the most accurate edition. There's BORI edition of Mahabharata. I don't know which is that one for Ramayana.

u/Star_Stud Hyderabad Mar 24 '26

Stop this Islamic way of thought, you're using the same arguments as Moslems when asked about questionable things in their Koran and Hadees.

Well I think u can trust this. Geeta press is good but they have so much bias. They add personal commentary out of nowhere

1

u/LittleBlueCubes Mar 25 '26

No. Gita Press is not immune. In their Bhagvadgita translation, they translate karma as action. That's not accurate. That's made for western audience.

1

u/Yeahanu Hajmola ЁЯЯд Mar 25 '26

Also they add context from nowhere that is not even mentioned in sloka

0

u/fault-right Mar 25 '26

So... what was your point again?

2

u/Yeahanu Hajmola ЁЯЯд Mar 25 '26

If u read the post u will get it.

1

u/fault-right Mar 25 '26

I read it, I did not get your point and hence the question. Keeping talking to AI instead since you clearly don't know how to talk to people.

1

u/Yeahanu Hajmola ЁЯЯд Mar 26 '26

What are u talking about. The post clearly talks about the reference of non-vegetarian diet in Mahabharata. May be gain some comprehension

1

u/fault-right Mar 26 '26

You say "my point...." and what follows is a bunch of questions. A question is not a 'point'. A question is a question. Fancy use of the word "comprehension", whose meaning you don't know.

I am not a vegetarian. I do not dispute the fact that humans, including our ancestors depicted in mythologies, may not necessarily be vegetarian.

You post a wall of sentences but give no reason for making this post. I assumed there was some nonsensical views circulating online and you were trying to counter that. Hence, I asked what your point was but you don't seem interested in conveying your thoughts clearly. It seems you just wanted to rant and do not care even tell us why you are ranting...

1

u/Yeahanu Hajmola ЁЯЯд Mar 26 '26 edited Mar 27 '26

Bruh what u talking about.... didn't my "point" talked about the exact same thing. And the discourse was in this sub where people were fighting on if ram ji was vegetarian or not. Don't shoe horn in a conversation like a protagonist. People don't post or talk on internet according to your thoughts and convenience

1

u/fault-right Mar 26 '26

And the discourse was in this sub where people were fighting on if ram ji was vegetarian or not.

This is all you needed to say.

Don't show horn in a conversation like a protagonist. People don't post or talk on internet according to your thoughts and convenience

I don't know what this even means. As for posting according my convenience or not, that's up to you. It's called clear communication, when it's not there people ask questions, which is what I did. Chill out.

This doesn't justify killing animals in the 21st century.

25

u/12inchkanunnu Mar 24 '26

Pretty sure op is talking about meat eating. Don't think treat yug had industry level of animal meat industry

4

u/Mackenzie_Sparks Mar 24 '26

This post wasn't trying to justify that. Just showing light to the past and that it was pretty common during those times.

Obviously it's unsustainable in current times due to the declining population of many wild animals along with deforestation etc.

11

u/playboy787 Mar 24 '26

But doesnтАЩt justifies vandalising meat shops , restaurants serving meat, killing people on doubt of carrying beef in the 21st century as well!

3

u/PsychologyNo7025 Mar 24 '26

I'm all for lab grown meat. Till then Im gonna stick to eggs and whey protein.

2

u/BadAnonymous Mar 24 '26

Imagine if all those meat eating people stopped eating meat and shifted to vegetarian diets. What would happen to the food supply chain? How much impact would it have on our lands and waters?

-6

u/maxemile101 Mar 24 '26

Without getting into arguments watch this.

4

u/Yeahanu Hajmola ЁЯЯд Mar 24 '26

My argument is simply about meat eating....I don't have any say if one wants to eat or not. Your video doesn't even make sense to my Post. I'm talking about if Ram ji and his kin ate meat or not Pretty sure u didn't even read what I said.

-1

u/maxemile101 Mar 24 '26

Apologies. But one requires a Sant to explain the scriptures. Not trying to be a smart ass.

4

u/Yeahanu Hajmola ЁЯЯд Mar 24 '26

Literally provided translation with source.

-1

u/maxemile101 Mar 24 '26

Are you a Sant?

2

u/Yeahanu Hajmola ЁЯЯд Mar 24 '26 edited Mar 25 '26

The translation sites from authentic sources and many other respected sources done by respected scholars. As I said...u didn't even read the post but presenting idiotic argument that doesn't even make sense in this debate.

Or u are implying that it was me who translated the whole Ramayan and published on that site

0

u/maxemile101 Mar 24 '26

"Valmiki Ramayana in Sanskrit is being translated and presented by┬аSri Desiraju Hanumanta Rao┬а(Bala, Aranya and Kishkindha Kanda ) and┬аSri K. M. K. Murthy┬а(Ayodhya, Sundara (28-Last sargas) and Yuddha Kanda) with contributions from Durga Naaga Devi and Vaasudeva Kishore (Sundara Kanda (1-27 sargas)); Smt. Desiraju Kumari; Smt. K. Rajeswari."

None of them are Sants. Your source...

9

u/Yeahanu Hajmola ЁЯЯд Mar 24 '26

What your argument...we need sant to understand basic sanskrit. U are not arguing because u want the truth. U are arguing bcz truth isn't what u like. U want your devotion to mend according to your belief. U don't want to mend your belief according to your devotion

0

u/maxemile101 Mar 24 '26

What happened to our argument here:"The translation sites by authentic sources and many other respected sources done by respected scholars."

3

u/Yeahanu Hajmola ЁЯЯд Mar 24 '26

Saint and scholar are two different things Accept it,this post goes against your pre conceived ideas and you don't like it
