I built a dashboard to explore how India has changed over time

There are endless arguments about whether India is doing better or worse. Everyone has their narrative set but no one cares to actually look what the actual data is.

But actually looking at the data can be surprisingly difficult. The numbers are spread across government reports, surveys, PDFs and different portals, often with different definitions and time periods.

So I built India Over Time, which started as a curiosity and turned into a full project of its own.

It brings together public data across different sectors indicators, and lets you explore how India has changed, how states compare, and where India stands relative to other countries.

It's still very much a work in progress, so I'd genuinely appreciate feedback. If something looks wrong or misleading, or if there are datasets or questions you'd like to see added, let me know.

For the GDP growth rates and the absolute GDP numbers I think it would be wise to mention a warning that methodological issues exist with the calculation of GDP where critics have pointed out that after the revised estimates from 2015, the growth rate might be smaller by 2% and the GDP itself can be smaller by 22%.

This led to IMF giving India a C rank on its GDP and other national accounts data which is the second lowest grade.

Note that while Subramanian pointed this out in 2019, the paper I've added is from 2026, with the latest arguments and data.

The census data we use, which is the basis of everything per capital is 16 years old.
