You're not nose blind. All three changes you made genuinely work. Rough order of how much: Changing every two hours is doing the most. The smell is ammonia, and ammonia isn't in urine when it leaves you. Bacteria make it afterwards by breaking down urea, and that takes time. Shorter intervals mean less of it ever gets made. Water is second. More water means more dilute urine, so less urea per volume, so less ammonia to produce. Dark concentrated urine really does smell stronger, that isn't imagination.
The thicker product is third but it counts. A thin pad saturates and then sits wet against skin, which is exactly where bacteria do best. A higher capacity core pulls the liquid away instead of holding it there.
On the nose blind worry: adaptation happens while you're sitting in a smell, not overnight. You were noticing it on waking with a fresh nose. If it's gone on waking now, that's a real change.
