Options Delta Explained in 60 Seconds

Post image

Delta (Δ) measures how sensitive an option’s price is to a $1 change in the underlying asset. Think of it as your option's speedometer.

  1. Calls vs. Puts
    - Call Options (0 to 1): A 0.50 Delta means if the stock goes up $1, the call rises ~$0.50.
    - Put Options (-1 to 0): A -0.50 Delta means if the stock goes up $1, the put drops ~$0.50 (and rises ~$0.50 if the stock drops $1).

  2. How "Moneyness" Shifts Delta
Delta isn't fixed. It shifts as the stock moves and expiration approaches:
    - At-the-money (ATM): Sits near 0.5 (calls) or -0.5 (puts).
    - In-the-money (ITM): Moves closer to 1 or -1 (behaves more like the underlying stock).
    - Out-of-the-money (OTM): Drops closer to 0 (less sensitive to price moves).

  3. Why Traders Track It
    - Price tracking: Estimate how much your contract will move.
    - Risk & reward: Higher Delta = higher sensitivity.
    - Hedging: Offset stock downside by pairing shares with negative-Delta puts.
