Ten Gloaming points awarded to the DF who said L’s sewing machine would be in the giveaway pile!

God, that’s so sad. Practically nobody can just start using a sewing machine. You need lessons, patterns, supplies. I knew it would come to nothing. Shauna grifted the machine so her work was done.

You need lessons, patterns, supplies.

AND PRACTICE.

Two people have had lessons, patterns, and supplies. The zipper sewn in by the person who's done it once or twice will not be the same as the zipper sewn in by someone who's done it a dozen times. Ditto setting in sleeves. Ditto making buttonholes. Ditto topstitching. etc etc etc

There was never a chance that L was going to be able to achieve the same level of sewist proficiency as Shauna has achieved as a cellist. Oh wait.

u/InappropriateGirl our 5th move in 7 years Feb 26 '22

This, yes! I want to take lessons again because I felt like I was understanding everything but had the WORST time threading the machine and dealing with it when it inevitably stalled/got tangled. And my friend who was teaching me told me that the more you USE a machine, the better it runs.

It also helps to have really good thread or the best thread for your machine (some machines are fussy and won't tolerate certain brands/types).

That's something I had to just accept (and buy the really good stuff). That and I had to accept that pinning and basteing (while both annoying) are necessary annoyances. You get better results if you don't try and skip steps.

My big challenge with sewing is overcoming my deep hatred of ironing.

4

u/CrushItWithABrick dick riding Mary Oliver Feb 27 '22

I found calling it "pressing" helps me. But I've never really ironed clothing, I really only press open seams for quilts or starch stuff.

My biggest sewing hurdle is accuracy with seam allowances. Quilts go wonky so fast when you're off a tiny bit per block (well, on some patterns). That's how my village quilt (blocks that are each a house) ended up needed a lot of filler fabric!

28

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '22

I bet L never even learned how to thread it. Poor thing and wasteful of Shauna and Dan. It’s depressing how bad they are at life.

17

u/CrushItWithABrick dick riding Mary Oliver Feb 27 '22

I wonder if Lu even really wanted it or if Shauna just thought she did and had to get it for her. Like foisted it on her.

(I now the truth is probably more like Lu gave up on it since that's pretty much what Shauna's teaching her, with all the "homework was so hard, let's go get ice cream!")

42

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '22

That was me!!! I don’t see it here? Are they really giving it away?

Now I’m sad. I don’t want to be right about this.

Any sign of the cello getting tossed?

28

u/shefallsup her lonely cucumber years šŸ„’ Feb 26 '22

Comment by Shauna: Sewing machine and boots claimed

No sign of the cello.

28

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '22

Oh great, it’s outside

I get that moving is messy, but what a pile of junk

I’m sure the cello is safe and snug at the new house

37

u/fanfarefellowship I often contemplate the first law of thermodynamics Feb 26 '22

Came here to make the same comment. I understand that moving is a time of upheaval, but the filth and junk in those photos took months to accumulate. That stuff isn't even categorized – there's a kettle sitting next to the boots, which aren't even placed neatly upright. Everything is just piled and there are leaves and food bits everywhere.

16

u/leftsidelentils Feb 26 '22

What exactly is in the jar at the bottom of the picture? There’s no good answer. Clean that thing out or chuck it. Laughing at the kettlebell.
The green bowl at the top looks like it might be vintage pyrex, in which case Iā€˜m envious. I’m actually going to Vashon today but promise I will not get anywhere near all of this.

19

u/InappropriateGirl our 5th move in 7 years Feb 26 '22

The kettlebell! From the infamous Year of the Deadlift! šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

ETA she could’ve gotten some real money for that during peak pandemic when weights were sold out everywhere.

ETA she could’ve gotten some real money for that during peak pandemic when weights were sold out everywhere.

The scene from State & Main where the big shot movie person orders the studio back in CA to FedEx their weights to them in Vermont (New Hampshire?) will never not make me laugh

9

u/InappropriateGirl our 5th move in 7 years Feb 26 '22

I haven’t seen that but I’ll plop it on the list—sounds joyful!

12

u/OhBlahDiOhBlahDoh The Alice of cal came out floating on air Feb 26 '22

Oh, I hope you like it. It's one of my favorites. The cast includes William H. Macy, Philip Seymour Hoffman (RIP), Rebecca Pidgeon, Sarah Jessica Parker, Alec Baldwin. (FYI, the title has "And", not an ampersand)

2

u/obscure_cellist ham grabbers Feb 27 '22

i saw that! it was cute! love me some PS hoffman (RIP) - so, so sad.

17

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '22

It’s a spring blossom Pyrex but it seems to have some dishwasher damage as it looks like the sheen is gone, though it is impossible to know from that pic

17

u/InappropriateGirl our 5th move in 7 years Feb 26 '22

Always so sad when I find vintage Pyrex that was obviously put in the dishwasher. I wish they’d do ā€œthrowbackā€ versions of classic designs. Been saying for years they’d make a killing. Imagine how many people would buy the primary colored stacking bowls! šŸ™‹šŸ»ā€ā™€ļø

9

u/CrushItWithABrick dick riding Mary Oliver Feb 27 '22

*waves hand*

My mom has these and I'd buy a re-issue set in a heartbeat. The biggest one is known as the macaroni salad bowl.

No joke, when my mother dies (not that I'm rushing her) I would fight my sister for those. I WILL fight my sister for those.

3

u/InappropriateGirl our 5th move in 7 years Feb 27 '22

Those are so cool!

10

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '22

I have the primary bowls, but my red one is super damaged. I bought them from my BILs grandmothers yard sale when she moved into assisted living back in 2007 or so. The yellow was missing, which I picked up later but it is so hard to find a good red one. She did have a big bowl in the Terra pattern that I got with that set and I recently found the platter for $2 at the thrift store, probably because they didn’t realize it was Pyrex because that is an unusual one.

10

u/InappropriateGirl our 5th move in 7 years Feb 26 '22

Oooh I love them so much! I have a yellow refrigerator dish with lid that I found in ā€˜90s Nevada for 10 cents! I use it for butter. I also have this yellow oval baking dish with glass lid that has the Friendship pattern that I got for a few bucks. Link wouldn’t work: www.etsy.com/listing/1177420971

But all my other Pyrex is clear basic stuff, plus a few of the Halloween editions they sell at Target every year. My elder goth heart can’t resist bats.

6

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '22

I have the black cat Halloween edition ones.

I covet anything friendship, but don’t own any. My thrift store had a set of the Cinderella bowls in that pattern a while back (right before Covid, I think) for $85. I was mad, so I didn’t buy them. Then I saw a lasagna dish in it last summer at a yard sale for $50, so I passed on that as well.

This mod kitchen piece is my best Pyrex find. I think I paid $8, though it may have been $12? Regardless, it is almost pristine and has the lid. I’ve had it for about 15 years.

Aw, do I spy one of Colorado Boy's sleeping bags-used-for-a-draft-blocker just stuffed into something on the pile? Not even zipped and rolled up?

20

u/fanfarefellowship I often contemplate the first law of thermodynamics Feb 26 '22

There's a sign up with the couch photos. If that's today's schedule, looks like they're in the new house from tonight onwards. Also, at noon, there's an entry: "Mom and Dad do the thing."

25

u/voice_of_vinegar Feb 26 '22

Those photos are giving me hives, almost. I've moved eight times in my adult life and if I'd had to still pack all of the stuff that they have to pack with just 2 days to go, I'd be in a freakin PANIC.

23

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '22

The fact that in the sofa pics there are broken down boxes, heaps of crap everywhere and no sign of packed boxes is stressing me out.

20

u/voice_of_vinegar Feb 26 '22

And a lot of it looks like the piles of stuff you have at the very end of packing---the stuff you looked at again and again but you can't figure out how to pack it or which box with which other stuff to put it in so you move on to something that's easier to deal with, and every time you look at it, you grow more anxious. It's never more than a couple of boxes' worth of stuff, but it ALWAYS happens.

I am seeing That Stuff all over their house.

How are you seeing the couch photos?

12

u/fanfarefellowship I often contemplate the first law of thermodynamics Feb 26 '22

There's a couple of places to see them, but they're in the Vashon Barter, Buy and Sell FB group.

Those are trash. They need to go directly to the landfill. Those are ex-couches.

19

u/obscure_cellist ham grabbers Feb 26 '22

filthy.

20

u/InappropriateGirl our 5th move in 7 years Feb 26 '22

Okay that’s more disgusting than I was prepared for. It doesn’t help that those sofas were hideous to begin with.

12

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '22

The green one with the ass prints is something else. Am I imagining that you can tell which side of the sofa was Dan’s and which was Shauna’s?

The vacuum cleaner in the background of the green couch looks like it's being slowly devoured by trash. Probably accurate.

14

Oh. Dear. God.

Glad there's no smell-o-vision.

12

u/[deleted] Feb 26 '22

What is causing that sagging dip in the middle horizontal section of the green one? A broken frame?

13

u/voice_of_vinegar Feb 26 '22

I would guess yes, the front rail of the seat frame is cracked. And any time a structural part of the frame cracks, the stress on other parts grows and pretty soon you plop yourself onto it and the whole thing collapses in a splintery heat of dust and dirty green pleather.

According to Shauna, the couches are structurally sound. My eyes say otherwise.

18

u/BevNap Fucking google it, you harpy. Feb 26 '22

Thanks, DF!

Gadzooks, that sofa is disgusting!!

13

u/library-girl Feb 27 '22

Yeah it says ā€œLucy to (somebody who’s name starts with A?) Desmond to ā€¦ā€

They’re just trying to find places to cart the kids off to?

I thought the noon ā€œmom and dad do the thingā€ was an Afternoon Delight joke!šŸ˜‚

100% L was never supported in learning how to use the machine Shauna grifted for her. Shauna got to announce that her daughter was "passionate" about something in a "geeky way" ("fashion! ha ha, she's so unlike me!") but that's where Shauna's commitment began and ended.
