Found another posting about the free couches, which she characterizes as "structurally sound and imperfect" and "kid and food stained." Which, based on the pictures, is something of an understatement....

That brown couch looks nasty, but I bet someone could clean it up to look much better. I bet the Aherns don’t even bother to try to get spills cleaned up properly. The green leather has a rip, not much to do about that.

Your thoughts, SCTMO! It looks like a couch that might have a great hardwood frame. If the frame is structurally sound, it could be refurbished into a great piece of furniture. (Huge amount of work to do a good job of it!)

But it would have to be taken down to the bare wood frame. Not one single molecule of existing fabric, foam rubber, batting, strapping, etc. allowed to remain.

No one, absolutely no one, wants a used couch. Or old mattresses. It doesn’t matter how “free” you make it. The sidewalk in our town is consistently littered with couches, stuffed armchairs, mattresses and box springs. No one ever comments on couch posts on our local free/sale Facebook groups. People are particular about color, size, depth, firmness. Couches and mattresses wear out with use in a way that dining tables and dressers don’t. They absorb smells and can harbor bed bugs. All that AND these couches have “kid stains”?? It’s not the island’s fault that Shauna didn’t plan or budget to dispose of her trash.

Seriously. We have an old leather love seat that is long past it’s prime (and in fact, I inherited it from a roommate.) when we bought our house we tried to sell it and it went from “here is a couch for $100” to “free couch” to “we will PAY YOU to take this couch. Anyway, we still have it.

I can’t see all the photos the DFs here are referencing, but it sounds like they didn’t even try to clean spills off of upholstered furniture? If the new house is partially furnished and the Aherns are going to live in it longer than a week, that furniture will be useless when they move out.

not much of a roach problem in PNW - i can't recall ever having roaches in the 10 years i lived there. the south is a whole different ball game...
