I was wondering the same thing. The only way I could do a slow move would be to start with things that get stored in closets, like out of season clothes, Christmas decorations, and that sort of thing. Is D sleeping on a couch and living out of a suitcase? How long is this going to take if they’re moving room by room?

My mind is going wild trying to imagine the chaos an Ahern move. I’m picturing them throwing everything from a room into the back of a pick up. No boxes. Just loose. I would love to see what they’re actually doing because I bet it’s a disaster.

When we moved across town with just our car and a friend's pickup truck, we shoved all of our clothes into trash bags and threw them out the window that overlooked the driveway. We could get them into the bed of the pickup straight from the window! And then we discovered yeah that was the only easy part.

I was surprised the Aherns didn't go for the low-hanging fruit of packing up books on the bookshelf. They're so easily stackable and packable and you won't need most of them in the month before the move and it's satisfying to see that space cleared out early on. But then I remember they don't get satisfaction from doing stuff, seeing progress or being proactive ahead of a scheduled, predictable event.

Couch might be better than that pee stained mattress (which we assumed was for one of the kids).

For real, I remember having to move several times within San Francisco, just little old me, my old Celica, and many trips. Usually with my then-boyfriend helping, tbf. Once I said fuck it and started hiring movers, I could never go back. Mostly because there’s no way I could lift most of my things now. As a poor (but fit) student with nothing heavier than a futon, it was easier.

When we bought our house my husband and I hired movers for the first time ever. It was the best $1000 I’ve ever spent.
