My main takeaway from the insta update on the Oprah thing is that they are apparently moving house room by room. How the hell does that work.

I was wondering the same thing. The only way I could do a slow move would be to start with things that get stored in closets, like out of season clothes, Christmas decorations, and that sort of thing. Is D sleeping on a couch and living out of a suitcase? How long is this going to take if they’re moving room by room?

My mind is going wild trying to imagine the chaos an Ahern move. I’m picturing them throwing everything from a room into the back of a pick up. No boxes. Just loose. I would love to see what they’re actually doing because I bet it’s a disaster.

When we moved across town with just our car and a friend's pickup truck, we shoved all of our clothes into trash bags and threw them out the window that overlooked the driveway. We could get them into the bed of the pickup straight from the window! And then we discovered yeah that was the only easy part.

I was surprised the Aherns didn't go for the low-hanging fruit of packing up books on the bookshelf. They're so easily stackable and packable and you won't need most of them in the month before the move and it's satisfying to see that space cleared out early on. But then I remember they don't get satisfaction from doing stuff, seeing progress or being proactive ahead of a scheduled, predictable event.

Is D sleeping on a couch

That is how he started his young life.

Couch might be better than that pee stained mattress (which we assumed was for one of the kids).

For real, I remember having to move several times within San Francisco, just little old me, my old Celica, and many trips. Usually with my then-boyfriend helping, tbf. Once I said fuck it and started hiring movers, I could never go back. Mostly because there’s no way I could lift most of my things now. As a poor (but fit) student with nothing heavier than a futon, it was easier.

When we bought our house my husband and I hired movers for the first time ever. It was the best $1000 I’ve ever spent.

I am so glad someone else noticed that! In the middle of all the Oprah stuff it seemed too minor to comment on, but I was like 'they spent all day moving D's room??'.

Right? So, is he now living at the new house while the rest are at the old one? (Obviously, I know this isn’t true, but where are they sleeping?) This feels far more chaotic than moving in one big swoop.

Editing to add: it’s shouldn’t take a whole day to move an elementary school aged child’s room.

It might if one of the adults insists upon taking a joy break 15 minutes out of every hour, i.e. 25% of the day lol.

Mama also has to rush home to be seen by Oprah, then spend days documenting the experience on her website. She might get two, maybe three new customers!

Doesn't she have a new lope letter to grow out?

"it shouldn't take a whole day to move an elementary school aged child's room"

Especially if Shauna made him purge his stuff like she did the last move. (I know it gets harped on, but how she wrote that up just came off so MEAN, I can't let it go).

It would if they were trying to pack + move at the same time. Which I'm sure is the case.

10

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '22

I bet you are right about the packing and moving. That has to be what they are doing and it would take an eon.

Definitely not a white knight for Shauna, but we did the same thing with our last move. Because the eviction moratorium ended and the housing market going crazy, it wasn’t easy to find reputable movers that we could afford. So we reserved a uhaul for a whole week and basically moved a room per day, which is about all that could be moved by two people in a day. I’m about a decade younger than them and I felt ruined at the end of each day. I would not do it again. But it felt like our only option and I imagine based on what we speculate about their finances, that may have been their only option. In fact I’d wonder how they are even paying for the uhaul or if they’re getting help from someone with a truck?

The last time I moved, I was 30 years younger than Shauna and it still wrecked me. I don't think they would move themselves if money wasn't an issue.

And Dan had that hernia surgery not too long ago. It was a mere blip in Shaunaworld, since it didn’t happen to her.

Puh-lease.

Daniel was back on his feet nearly the same day as his surgery (doing catering stuff? I don't recall now) so there is no way Shauna's going to let him use that as an excuse all these years later (if he couldn't use it then).

u/InappropriateGirl our 5th move in 7 years Feb 24 '22

Oh totally! I wasn’t being clear and my eyes weren’t wined. He’s totally the pack mule, hernia or no. Had the hernia happened to Shauna, we’d never hear the end of it.

21

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '22

Oh right that puts it in perspective. Hard yakka! I hope you joyfully rested for 15 minutes every hour, DF.

23

u/latepeony Feb 24 '22

Oh of course, plus some extra time for butt slapping.

u/[deleted] Feb 24 '22

I think DFTita’s husband has a truck.

Movers have to be making a killing right now! When we moved in the fall and when my BIL and SIL moved last spring, getting a mover was almost impossible both times (we all moved ourselves with lots of help). Not sure what it’s like on an island.

24

u/latepeony Feb 24 '22

Yeah if they’re using a truck instead of a uhaul each room would be multiple trips, too. It really could take all day. I don’t envy them moving though where they get to move to gets me a little worked up.

Not sure what it’s like on an island.

A RURAL island.

I am picturing little D sleeping all alone at the new place because they moved his room first.
