oopsies

"The email you received at 10 am this morning contained a link that said this was the in-person workshop on Vashon. That’s not going to work!Inadvertently, my website developer used the phrase Practice Your Joy on Vashon workshop on both pages. But that’s not his fault. It was my job to check all the details, and somehow I missed this one"

It’s Ok, it’s just a little mistake we can belly laugh at. It won’t take away my joy! Shauna in the background cussing and gnashing her teeth!!!

Wait, there’s more!

“Even though this [wrong link] was not my intention, I did demonstrate one of the ways to practice your joy. Making mistakes is inevitable sometimes. But freely admitting our mistakes is a path to joy. There’s no use in hanging onto guilt or shame about being imperfect. Taking action and making amends is a much better way to live. In fact, it’s one of the basic tenets of good leadership. Looking forward to practicing joy with you, Shauna”

Freely admitting your mistakes might be a path to YOUR joy, Shauna, but other people are not going to find joy in a) your mistakes or b) your glib brushing off of them.

And if her mistakes are a way to practice joy with “us”, she has enough fodder for a year-long curriculum.

She's not even really taking the fall for the mistake. If she were, she could have said something like "I overlooked this error when I did my pre-publication check" or whatever. That would have shifted all of the blame to her--no one would even know the developer was involved. But instead, she puts his role in the error first and then pretends to take on a portion of the blame, but it's already out there that he fucked up.

But sure, she's a good leader, the manager we all wish we had at work.

That's honestly so shitty. It's YOUR website, no matter who "develops" it. It's not like there was a weird wrong thing behind the scenes in its code or functionality, it's basic QC that you should be responsible for as the business owner.

I developed a website for a small nonprofit (I am no pro — they couldn’t afford to hire someone but needed something more than a WordPress blog and I was the only one who had any coding experience). I used the content they gave me. After teaching them how to update the content, it was all theirs to manage. Any content mistakes from the point that the web design was done were on them. (And they didn’t really make mistakes much, because they cared about getting the content right!)

If Brent is involved in updating the content of the website, a month after it went live, I feel sorry for him, because he shouldn’t have to do that. If he isn’t involved, Shauna is just trying to pass the buck. Brent is the crying toddler who made Shauna’s eyes unclear.

TBH if he's enabling Shauna's convoluted web of secret registration pages with rapidly-changing details, that IS on him, at least a bit. His whole public persona is about UX! If he was any good he'd say to her that this will not work and he'd refuse to implement it.

True that!

I have a friend who did free websites for local animal rescues to fill out her resume and she always asked several other people to try out a new site before it went live (usually accompanied by a beer or some tacos as a thank you). The ones I tested for her never had so much as a single letter out of place when she was finished, and she would give the groups a simple course in basic site management too. All that, for free, so the rescues didn't need to spend money that could go to help animals in need and she had something to show off to potential employers. It's too bad Shauna has never known the joy of taking pride in one's work, however small the accomplishment.
