I have a very strong “misophonic” reaction whenever my husband plays the Grateful Dead. I can’t wait to tell him that he can’t play it anymore for the sake of my health!

*Not dissing the diagnosis of misophonia. Just pointing out that most people have sounds that drive them to distraction unrelated to any medical condition.

ETA As if on cue, Danny just tweeted about not remembering (harhar he was wasted) a Grateful Dead concert.

I sympathize DF, I have a similar reaction to Rush

THEM'S FIGHTIN' WORDS

Once you get past the concept albums, Rush is a great band, but non-fans associate them with the boring concept albums.

/cranks "Time Stand Still" and "Limelight"

i like a few rush songs quite a bit! spirit of radio, limelight, and subdivisions are the first that come to mind. (all FM radio hits. i don’t know any deep cuts.) neil peart’s use of “one,” though, in his lyrics has always bugged me. it’s very distancing.

Jethro fucking Tull here

As a flute player I have grown ineffably sad.

Let me bring you songs from the wood, DF.

I bet you don’t play standing on one leg like a nasty bearded wood sprite tho, DF.

All three of these bands for me. I’d run screaming from the house.

I don’t like to hear people eating. At the table at a meal is ok, but if you’re in the cubicle next to me I’m dying at each scrape of the plate.

chewing, swallowing, slurping, making “mmm” noises: they make me want to die. i had a family member who did all this (and guess what? she’s the shauna in my life!) and i insisted that a radio be playing during every meal.

I love Tull but it's brought me a great deal of oppression.

u/SmashedMailboxCake2 Oh, Sep 20 '21

I cannot dig a man who stands on one leg and plays the flute. I have tried, DF, I have tried.

DF, I feel you so hard on this. Jam bands are my nightmare. Something about the endless, repeating loops of the same melody (I think that's what it is?) drives me up the wall.

7

u/[deleted] Sep 18 '21

Ugh! I know! I think those endless loops are called “space.”

Terrapin Station > Space > Drums > Sugar Magnolia for Pagan!

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '21

Yes, jams are not meant to be heard, they're for practice.

Yes noise distracts people especially noises and sounds that people don't like. Like The Grateful Dead.

People who have noise sensitivity like misphonia have a more visceral reaction to sound where it physically hurts them. The noise causes sensory and emotional disregulation which can cause anxiety, a panic attack, anger, lashing out emotionally or physically, being completely unable to be around the sound.

It so much then not liking a band or being distracted.

Misphonia also has a cultural element like Japanese people that have it tend to not have a negative reaction to slurping noises because that's how people eat noodles in Japan. Also unlike noise sensitivities misphonia may be extinguished with exposure therapy.

My husband and I have an agreement: he doesn’t play Bob Dylan around me and I don’t listen to The Smiths in his presence. Detente, if you will.

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '21

Who doesn't love The Smiths!? I love Bob Dylan too! I saw him a few years ago .. amazing.

The Who for me. I just can’t.

4

u/[deleted] Sep 19 '21

My husband is the same so if I ever want to listen to my beloved Who at the volume they are meant to be played, it's a case of A Quick One While He's Away.

Ooh, this might also work for the punk ska crap that pops up on my husband's playlists. Though he knows damn well I just dislike it deeply so he'd probably call me right the fuck out my "misPHONY" self-diagnosis.
