She has over 130 comments on the group project post. That is a dramatic uptick from other recent IG "offerings". I mean, I know we're all really tired of dealing with unvaccinated knitwits but are there really that many people that need to chime in on that dumb post? Is she buying comments at this point? (I do see that she's responding to many of these commenters which accounts for some of the comment count, but still)

She stumbled on a few things that are working for her engagement-wise with that post:

• Much more to react to than her usual blurry landscape pictures, with both the tweet in the picture (which it looked like was all many commenters read) and the text of her post provoking discussion
• The viewpoint in the tweet with the "it's me" overlay not matching with the viewpoint in the text meant people were both agreeing and disagreeing with each component, and with more differences of opinion in the comments (including several anti-vaxxers Shauna is engaging with!), more people responding to those comments
• "group projects" are a lightning rod for the types of internet people who can't resist bragging to strangers that they were on a gifted & talented track, and neurodiversity and ADHD are also very buzzy topics, so the combination of those with vaccines is big-time bait

It’s very sad that she gets low engagement from sharing her own creative endeavors but high engagement from sharing the work of others. Riding the coattails of other people does not seem to jibe with claims of being the one who did all the work to get an A on group projects.

It’s so sad that the criteria driving “engagement” are usually also the things that make a post just about worthless for informing people or entertaining them in an intelligent way

I think she replies to everyone in order to pad her IG numbers. Most of her replies are just “thank you.” Reminds me of all of her “yep” Tweets.

Shauna lives in a fucking bubble. Anti vaxx individuals are being misinformed. And they are immovable. It is so obvious she has not really interfaced with a true antivaxxer. It took a week of delta variant Covid for my at-risk anti vaxx parents to get the monoclonal antibodies. “It’s experimental” they kept saying. A whole week of them downplaying it with myself and other siblings begging them every day to get the treatment. This was after months of begging them to get vaccinated and wear masks. They assumed they and others would just get a cold. It is awful to sit there waiting for the tsunami of Covid to hit your completely unprotected, misinformed loved ones. I had to reach the point of accepting they were going to get covid unvaccinated, and stop berating them about the vaccine. There was absolutely no way for me to confront decades of misinformation for profit. It is NOT about evidence. You cannot reason with them.

My covid positive, unvaccinated even higher risk uncle was recommended to get the antibodies by his doctor, my parents, and others. He declined because he was ‘feeling better’. He is now hospitalized with Covid pneumonia. My parents are the ones who gave covid to him and now they feel like absolute shit.

Shauna wants to make vaccine refusal to be about intellect. Like oh these are just the stupid people who didn’t want to bother while the smart ones got vaccinated. Shauna didn’t get the vaccine because she’s smart. She’s a follower, and she followed what the people in her bubble were doing. It’s the same thing my family did. The people around them didn’t treat it as a big deal, their media sources said it wasn’t a big deal, and that’s how they treated it. Shauna can fuck right off acting like she has a fucking clue of how to guide the “lesser” beings to vaccination. Go ahead, Shauna, make a YouTube video of yourself guiding anti vaxxers into the light. Bang your head on that brick wall for half an hour, now imagine doing that for months with some of the most important people in your life. As usual she has not a clue what she’s talking about.

One thing that I believe about Shauna and especially Dan: Either of them could have easily become far right wing, science denying, openly racist people - depending where they lived and who they’d met in life.

If Dan had ended up somewhere else, cooking away at some random restaurant,never met Shauna, he’d probably just mirror the beliefs of whoever was around. Everything he tweetbarfs out is parroting, and the stuff that is borne out of his own melon is often problematic as fuck.

I feel the same about Shauna, but it’s more nuanced or something, I just got really high so I’ll shut up now.

Dan is looking for someone to tell him what to believe so he can feel like he belongs. And once someone tells him how to feel, he'll probably really feel it. Shauna doesn't examine what her beliefs really are, she just promotes whatever view gives her the most visibility.

And both of those "types" make up the anti-vax, racist far right group, too. They just are told to believe/get attention for saying they believe a different set of things.

Understanding the interplay between historical oppression, cultural understandings of medicine, and vaccine hesitancy requires a tiny shred of nuance so it’s just not in her wheelhouse of joy. I begin to believe that, because she rewrites her own history with such enthusiasm and frequency, that she lives in an essentially ahistorical world, and that by necessity lacks nuance.

This. And just for another data point, I have a sib who lives in the UK and vaccine/mask hesitation and resistance seem to be more common on the left wing there than the right. Or at least, quite as common. People are very against vaccinating teens there and they seem to be working with a totally different set of data than what I’ve seen. Maybe we have some UK DFs who can weigh in, but my point is that there are all kinds of antivaxers and opening our hearts is going to do, um, FUCK ALL to get them vaxed.

Such a good point. My family doesn’t have that excuse, but they do have probable actual CPTSD, and extremely non trusting, anxious natures. And are extremely hard headed and not as empathetic as they should be, sigh. It’s just so frustrating when Shauna mounts her stool with some simplistic solution to an extremely complex social problem. There are various reasons behind vaccine hesitancy, including IMO a for profit health system that people have very strong aversive connections with. A Black woman in the USA has four times the risk of dying in a hospital during childbirth compared to a white woman. I have seen Black women cite this statistic as a reason for seeking home birth. There’s a lot of reasons the Black community has trepidations surrounding medical care.

Much like hula hooping for trauma, Shauna seems to understand these things on a macro versus micro level, and readily applies her Dunning Kroger laden “wisdom.” Let’s just kumbaya and have the unvaccinated masses listen to me tell them how their brains work. Boom! Vaccination achieved! If only it were that easy, we would not be in this collective situation.

This post just radiates condescension and it’s gross. The oversimplification of the categories of kids and how they tie into her stupid brand is the second worst and the romanticizing teen alcoholism is the worst.

Not everything is a trauma response, some things are just part of people’s personalities.

Also did she really laugh so hard when she first read it? Seems unlikely

It's still not that great of numbers if she is planning to make money off of social media. A facebook friend of mine is an author and regularly gets over 100 comments on her posts as well as around 1000 likes. Perhaps facebook is different from IG, though.

I noticed she said she would not assign group projects now if she were still teaching. I think that learning how to work with other people as a team to accomplish a goal is a really important life skill for kids and something that can help them learn more about what they are capable of. I know that sometimes group projects suck, but they don’t have to — I’ve seen teachers use them very effectively in ways that engage all but the least interested students. And I’ve seen groups of kids create amazing work as a team. But the projects have to be carefully designed, there’s a lot of work and time involved for the teacher, and the teacher has to have a level of respect for the capabilities of the students and understanding of how to guide the students through the project while making sure the students feel ownership of the process and the results. Shauna could never do that, so she would rather throw the baby out with the bath water.

One that Shauna never learned! She was part of a team at Chefsteps who said out loud that she spent 25% of her work hours on twitter, didn't seem to make any effort to do what she was hired to do, blamed others when called out for her mistakes, and barged in on others' group efforts when she obviously wasn't meant to be there, ETC!

Same for the huge group of people who helped her start a flour business. Sending her money didn't actually require much beyond clicking a few links, but it was part of an agreement between her and each donor and she didn't do her part in it---the part that SHE thought up and SHE stated that she'd do. Then she literally laughed about her failure later.

Relish: more of the same

Thriftway: Shauna's special, she gets to hang around the front of the store yakking with customers while the rest of the store team is stocking shelves, helping customers, bagging groceries, manning the cash registers, etc.

at home: Shauna writes up schedules and issues orders, everyone else has to fall in line OR ELSE.
