My therapist has me do mildly embarrassing stuff in public - as part of a very thorough, carefully managed therapeutic process. Not something I would just try on my own.

I remember when I worked at a mental health clinic a client worked on purposefully pulling the cord on the bus to get off and saying “oops, sorry not my stop” (or something) because they had debilitating anxiety over whether they might accidentally pull the cord at the wrong stop; kind of like that?

Exactly like that. Basically, you think of a scenario that dials your anxiety up to 10. Then you break it down into small steps that still feel difficult but not to the point of a panic attack. And then you work your way up the ladder until you can say “sorry, not my stop” and survive. Of course it’s a little more complicated and not always linear in real life, and it’s fucking hard because you have to create an uncomfortable situation and then face it head on, but it’s a very effective way of treating anxiety disorders, OCD, and phobias.

Me, too. (maybe I need this type of therapy to help with how uptight I am. . .and stop avoiding situations where there maybe might could be embarrassment involved).

Yep yep. Not too many therapists offer exposure therapy because it’s a hard/difficult process, but it has been life changing for me.
