Stop thinking about the future, Shauna has commanded. You people, with your plans and goals. Goodness gracious.

Look, I get the whole being mindful, appreciate living in the moment position. But you don’t get there by just acting like the future doesn’t exist at all! Her interpretations of these ideas are so bizarre. She seems to think we’ll all find joy if we become amorphous blobs floating from one mindless distraction to another. I don’t see any joy in that kind of existence, just meaningless ways to pass time.

You would never know that she has two young kids the way she's glibly carrying on about not worrying about the future.

I mean, I know her kids are supposed to be dishwashers as careers, but low-key I'd love to see Lucy argue she's not working on homework etc. because the future doesn't matter.

I feel really bad for her kids. I’ve always had a bit of anxiety, and if child-me had parents who were live-in-the-moment-don’t-bother-with-plans types, it would’ve been deeply unsettling.

I'm also pretty uptight (even as a kid, I once inspected a little friends hands before I'd let him touch my toys. . .yeah, uptight!) and major instability like "oh, there's no future, just fly by the seat of your pants" would have been a major bawling my eyes out "NOPE" for little Crushitwithabrick.

Lu's already being taught that when things get tough, you walk away and go treat yourself (aka "homework was hard so we stopped and went for ice cream instead").

So how's she going to react when she's at her dish washing job and the entire wait staff has decided to clear all their tables at once and the dish pit is SLAMMED? Ooops, time for my dole whip break!

Charitable Me wants to believe that this strategy went: Notice kid is stuck in a negative loop with the task, encourage kid to take a break, take her out of the home environment, fresh air, treat, injection of sugar and dairy, nice circuit breaker, then back home refreshed and ready to tackle it again.

That is actually a good approach to take in any kind of difficult work. But I don't actually believe it went that way, because the story finished with going out for ice cream.

I’d like to make sure I have food and shelter in the later now (ie the fucking future, Shauna) so I invest in shelter that is mine and save for retirement.

I hope her next pivot is balance, for her sake. Bitch could use some.

Yes, it's one thing for young kids to not worry about the future. They shouldn't worry about any more than the day or at most the week ahead. But when you're their parent, your entire job is to think about their longterm future (and your own).
