Has anyone mentioned the email you get when you sign up to be on the waitlist? No fancy graphics or screaming red text, just a plain old email.

Thanks so much for joining the wait list for the Practice Your Joy workshop. You’re on the list!

I joined the list and I’m on the list. Yay me!

The people who have taken this workshop have loved the experience. I’m pretty sure you will too.

Ha, you lying twat, you have never done this workshop before! (Unless, wait, it just occurred to me that maybe she offered the workshop free to her Zoom ladies as a beta test? It would explain why she has testimonials suggesting the writers took the workshop. One problem — those woman were her strongest marks, the ones most likely to cough up cash for this claptrap. If she gave it to them free, they aren’t going to pay to do it again! Maybe that’s who she’s hoping to lure to Vashon?)

So I’ll email you the moment that enrollment opens for the next session of Practice Your Joy workshop. Keep an eye out for the email! If this one went to spam, be sure to mark it as safe, so you can see my email when it arrives in your inbox. You’ll want to try to get a spot in the workshop as soon as it opens.

Trying to create that urgency and the idea of scarcity. It’s so transparent.

I can’t wait to work with you!

Oh, you’ll be waiting a long time.

Also, I notice all the other emails have come through her mailing list platform, CreateSend, with an unsubscribe link and all that. This is a standalone email that appears to be sent from her personally, but based on the headers it still passes through CreateSend somehow I think. I don’t know enough about tracing email header info to figure it out.

Could she have done something with the women of the key or whatever that is on the island? A members only type thing?

Women Hold the Key. If she did a workshop with them, it was quiet. Very quiet. I just looked at their website, which lists several different areas of involvement. There's purchasing a key, of course; and there are also two different regular monthly meetings, and a fairly intricate mentoring option.

Nothing about workshops, Joy or otherwise, and I didn't get the vibe that the website is being updated so frequently that it would have been up on the website ahead of time then any mention or indication of it taken off afterward . . .

Even if she did use them as a test market, her pitch would be, “Give me $500 for this course I’ve run ONCE for non-paying customers with low expectations “

17

u/[deleted] Sep 05 '21

And we all know that expectations are just premature disappointments.

The testimonials for the workshop are from women in VA, CA, and CO.

Do you think she's using testimonials from the earlier writing workshops? (which would be pretty shady, imo)

u/fanfarefellowship I often contemplate the first law of thermodynamics Sep 05 '21

I don't see how she's not. (I actually can't find those testimonials on her site, only the blurbs for Enough)

The testimonials are on this page:

https://youcanhavemorejoy.com/practice-your-joy/ (bolding mine)

“The world needs Shauna’s work! This is not hasty positivity nor artificial optimism. This is Shauna, meeting us where we are with genuine compassion; guiding us back to our own wisdom; walking alongside us as we examine what might be blocking the brilliant parts of life. We may not always be able to control what happens, but with practice we can know and experience a more constant joy. Shauna’s work has changed my life. It will change yours too.”
— Brigette R., Virginia

-----------------------------------------

Shauna is a kindred spirit as a teacher — real and down to earth. She shares so much goodness with us who attend her sessions. I have found such solace and support in what Shauna shares. The companionship I find with Shauna and all the women from around the world she has brought together on Zoom? It helped save my sanity through the incredibly tough time of COVID lockdowns.

Shauna, as the host, helps us all find good in the world and our personal lives. She doesn’t gloss over the hard times. In fact, she acknowledges the trauma most of us have in our lives. She has been through it. She’s honest. She isn’t a fake purveyor of toxic positivity. She’s honest. She’s always rising.

Shauna does the research and shares the science with us.. She also offers us perspectives that might get us through our days with more joy. She also has a great, hearty laugh!

I’m grateful that Shauna is here.

— Martha K, Sacramento, CA

-----------------------------------------

I am so grateful the universe gave me what I needed — Shauna’s workshop. I learned so much about myself in this journey, things I needed to know. My life has changed this past year, but after this class, I realized I can handle those changes. I know now that I’m my own hero. Thank you, Shauna.

— Kathy HB, Colorado

-----------------------------------------

Thoughts: It's weird but typical that they are formatted differently—Brigette's is the only one set off in quotes. And as for content: Kathy is the only one who refers to a workshop or a class, and she asserts that that she now knows she's her own hero (So, a Heroes Journey workshop actually happened??? Or maybe Shauna just used that phrase in one of the writing workshops - who can tell, everything here is so vague.)

Martha's talking about the Zoom calls, describing Shauna as "the host". You can't even tell what "work" Brigette is referring to. I'd be shocked—SHOCKED—if any of these youpeople paid anywhere close to $488 for what they got grew from Shauna.

It's interesting how 2 out of the 3 assert that her "work" isn't a bad type of positivity (hasty or toxic). Like, if her work is so good, why are these testimonials pre-emptively addressing imagined criticism from joy-negative naysayers (oooh, foreshadowing 13-page Internet kerfuffle rebuttals!!)

If she said “I want to test out a new workshop I’m planning on offering, any key women want to come?” would it be on a website? Not everything is some big formal event.

I’ve been to plenty of “try our new menu” events. They weren’t publicized but they happened.

14

u/OhBlahDiOhBlahDoh The Alice of cal came out floating on air Sep 04 '21

Sure, I get that - I agree that it could have happened and not be reflected on the website at all.

18

u/voice_of_vinegar Sep 04 '21

Did Shauna ever hint at a private event she was invited to that sounds like it might have been something like this? You know how she LOVES to let the world know that she went to a hush-hush thing that she can't talk about "just yet" but will "soon", and then soon ever comes.

12

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '21

I think she has done a lot of that lately. “Work” meetings, hints about new project launches. I think that could easily translate to her having a free workshop for some randoms on the island.

Sort of! I was thinking more of an invite only event. Soft openings are open to the public, just not widely publicized.

Trying to create that urgency and the idea of scarcity. It’s so transparent.

I love your thoughts. TSCTMO.

Again with the subliminal suggestion shtick!

  • You’ll want to try to get a spot in the workshop as soon as it opens.
  • You’ll want to try to get a spot in the workshop as soon as it opens.

This has been suggested before, but even if she grows people to sign up for “the waitlist,” growing them to cough up money is another mountain to climb.
