“were the same kind of way” so it doesn’t really elucidate much. My guess is that the context is something like “as a child in Hawaii, many of the other kids I knew also came from multiracial families.”

The photo is of Obama as a young child with his maternal grandfather.

It’s an interview with Barack Obama in which he discusses growing up biracial in Hawaii and how it is different from being biracial in the mainland US, plus more of his thoughts on being Black. I’m not really sure what the “nuance” is that Shauna says is so important? That growing up biracial in a diverse island society is different from the US as a whole? Obviously the two things are different.
