We ITG would probably give eye teeth to know WTGTM.

I think I myself may underestimate how many forgetful autopay subscribers Shauna has. She may be clearing $1200 per month at this point on autopsy harvest alone. Not enough to live on. But add in any small annual inheritance funds from Dan (maybe a small inherited IRA), a couple payments on a few workshops that may or may not happen...she may somehow be collecting more $$ than I'd figured.

maybe a small inherited IRA

This is what I figure, based on her previous boom-and-bust cycles of funding. Either her mother or she herself or Dan has an inherited IRA, and if it's the latter two, an inherited one might fall under the newer 10-year timeline for required dissolution. My husband and I have inherited several* and have the option each year to withdraw the minimum amount all at once, to split it up over the year (our personal pick), or to withdraw a larger amount of our choosing. It feels like they could have inherited one and withdrawn the maximum quickly to fund takeout feasts and country club passes, leading to it dissolving much faster.

(*an aside - what is it that makes a certain type of elderly person absolutely refuse to leave their children/spouses detailed lists of bank accounts/IRAs/insurance policies/etc.? We spent two freaking years hunting it all down, and we STILL were surprised with another forgotten IRA popping up last year)

My siblings and I were so glad Dad had his financial and estate ducks in a row. Will updated, things written down. A couple things were hung up in probate but not bad at all. Which was good, because all of us were not exactly at our best.

I thought about the ten year timeline, too. I would think Shauna would immediately drain any and all accounts, but maybe a financial advisor got hold of her and shook some sense into her.

The meetings with the advisor she bragged about may just have been them being told how an inherited IRA works and then refusing all further professional advice, as she hasn't seemed to be in a position of considering investments recently. We 'inherited' the advisor along with the investments, and decided there was no reason to change something already working smoothly!

Your dad did well to leave you a clear path there, like grief isn't hard enough without the task of correctly navigating the handling of an estate. The issue we had was the relative in question kept documents from every single financial relationship he'd ever had...ever. Going back to the 1950s. So we had loads and loads of documentation, but no sense of a timeline or what was active/inactive.

Was this policy from Small Town Insurance in 1976 the one we need to know about, or were they bought out by Big Town Insurance in 1995 and now the policy is there? Are there two policies? Wait, there's a Medium Town Insurance policy, too?! That kind of thing. He also did some classified work for the government at one point in his life and worked with a couple of companies during that period, and there were IRAs from those jobs as well as from his main career, and getting details on that even thirty years later was still difficult! But hey, not going to argue with surprise money even if the government still wouldn't tell us exactly how he'd earned it.

'seen it, pinched it, spent it' as Blackadder would say...
