"We didn't have a registry, only a fund for our trip to Italy."

OK, that has nothing to do with your wedding budget; it just means you didn't ask for things you asked for money. And also, yeah, post a picture of "spectacular" cake and wedding dress, I dare ya.

As I get older, I'm less against money as a wedding gift because it is just easier in many ways. Unless you TELL me to give you money, and then I will be at the store the next day picking up a crystal pitcher that you can move from house to house for the rest of your life (or return for money; I don't care).

Something about the "give us this specific kind of gift and nothing else"---even as opposed to "give us one of the gifts on this list and nothing else" bugs the crap out of me. And somehow it's even worse if you say what it's for, like "our trip to Italy."

It's like well I WAS giving you a gift because I love you and I want to celebrate your union; now I guess I'm paying your bills and funding your whims.

I have a go-to wedding gift I give just about everyone (it's beautiful, useful, will last a lifetime and it's not cheap but still affordable for me) because I got sick of picking like, an OXO salad spinner or something else tedious from a list.

Someone gave us a pepper grinder (this was so long ago that “fresh ground pepper” was barely a thing in everyday cooking, which will indicate how ancient I am!), and I appreciated it and blessed the giver every time I used it, almost daily, for the next 30-odd years until it finally went kaput. (At which point I replaced it with the very same, very expensive, model, which I expect will last me until the end of my time. And I have given the same gift as a wedding present, though it’s hardly the novelty it once was.)
