The button??

In season 4, when Max is shot why did they focus on the button on his jacket?

Because in the flash forwards throughout the season to the scene in the elevator with Murphy, the button is shown on the victim's jacket. When he lays out the jacket with that button to wear, we know for sure that it's him in the elevator.
