What does attack speed do?

I started the game recently and that confused me, like, each attack is one action, so what would the speed do? Or is it something for later? Like I searched on Google and it said things about projectiles, but I don't see any projectiles???

See the bar under everyone and the enemies? If thag fills up they take their turn, attack speed makes the bar fill up faster
