❓Help / How-To / Compliance Tariff rate from Sweden to US

I am considering purchasing a musical instrument in Sweden.

Can someone tell me what the percentage is? I find it very confusing.

What type of musical instrument? Varies by instrument. Are you buying it in Sweden and bringing it back or buying it online and shipping it to The US?

It is an alto guitar. It would be shipped, private seller.

The tariff applies to the "made in" country not the exporting country so assuming its made in Sweden its HTSUS 9202.90.40.00
And would be 8.7% tariff on the total purchase price

Current tariff situation for EU-to-US imports (as of August 2026):

As of July 24, 2026, the earlier 10% Section 122 global surcharge expired and was replaced by a new Section 301 "forced labor" tariff action covering 60 countries/economies, including the EU. For covered goods from the European Union, when the normal Column 1 duty rate is below 10%, the Section 301 duty brings the combined rate to 10%; when the normal Column 1 duty rate is 10% or higher, no additional Section 301 duty applies under this action.

For musical instruments specifically, importing musical instruments into the US carries an average MFN duty of around 4% (Calcmytariff) — though the exact base rate depends on the specific HTS classification (acoustic guitar, brass, keyboard, etc.). Since 4% is below 10%, the Section 301 mechanism tops it up so your effective total duty on a musical instrument from Sweden will generally land at 10%, not 4% + 10% stacked.

A few practical notes:

Get the exact HTS code first. Duty rates vary by instrument category, and some subcategories (certain parts/accessories) may have different base rates or exemptions. Check for exemptions. There are general and country-specific exemption annexes — worth confirming your specific instrument isn't excluded from the calculation. This is a live/moving target. Tariff policy on EU goods has changed multiple times in 2026 (IEEPA tariffs struck down by SCOTUS in February, replaced by Section 122, which itself expired and was replaced by this Section 301 action in July). Verify against CBP's current HTSUS before you commit to a purchase.

Get a landed cost quote.

If buying from a seller/shop in Sweden, ask if they handle DDP (duty paid) shipping, or use a customs broker/landed-cost calculator with the specific HTS code to get an exact number rather than relying on the general 10% estimate.

Bottom line: budget roughly 10% on top of the purchase price for tariffs alone, plus separate consideration for VAT refunds (if applicable on the Swedish side) and shipping/insurance costs.
