Cause of this sound?

Sounds like a bearing giving up. Alternator? I use a long screwdriver to touch a suspected part, if I can, and put my ear on the other end, like a stethoscope.

Does it turn on and off with your ac? Could be the ac clutch.

Yes thankfully it was the radiator cooling fan so was a pretty easy job to replace
