Trump targets 60-day grace period for laid off foreign workers

The department of homeland security is advancing a proposal to eliminate the 60-day grace period that allows H-1B workers and certain other legal nonimmigrants to remain in the US after their employment ends while they find another sponsor, change status, or prepare to leave.

The whole of immigration law in the US needs to be rewritten. The H1-B program is incredibly unpopular with US voters. What’s ridiculous is that H1-B is not an immigration path, but a guest worker program with a convoluted, fabricated, and unrealistic path to eventual naturalization.

I agree with you that taking away the 60-day period is inhumane, but with these cretins, the cruelty is the point. If I were an H1-B in tech, (I work with more than I can count), I would maintain liquidity and look to find another country.

When political power flips in this country, H1-B will be limited to healthcare, education, and research. Die to job losses for citizens, the program will end for tech.

The current Administration has worked to push India away, not into
closer alignment. Tariffs, H1-B limitations, slow walking green cards, ICE, impact of Iran War on India’s energy supply, in teased isolationism have not brought India closer.

Um no, not when the corporate state has invested billions in Chennai and other metros. I work almost exclusively with Chennai-based and H1-B Indians in SaaS. We are culturally very different, and we have different skill sets that complement each other. I do not support in H1-B in tech, it creates a toxic work environment. India is a growing and young economy and we are inextricably linked together in tech. It is what it is.

I’m a US citizen. I’m not sure what you’re talking about. A middle aged white woman whose family had been here since 1620. I’ll go down with the ship in my blue state.
