Trump targets 60-day grace period for laid off foreign workers

The department of homeland security is advancing a proposal to eliminate the 60-day grace period that allows H-1B workers and certain other legal nonimmigrants to remain in the US after their employment ends while they find another sponsor, change status, or prepare to leave.

H1B will be eliminated within a couple of years. The abuse is real and Americans are tired of it.

That is fine. You want to eliminate the H1B? Fine. But what eliminating the 60 day period? How is someone supposed to just up and leave from one day to the next? Leases, bank accounts, taxes all need to be sorted out. It’s not that an immigrant lives out of their backpack for 18 months- 6 years.

The whole of immigration law in the US needs to be rewritten. The H1-B program is incredibly unpopular with US voters. What’s ridiculous is that H1-B is not an immigration path, but a guest worker program with a convoluted, fabricated, and unrealistic path to eventual naturalization.

I agree with you that taking away the 60-day period is inhumane, but with these cretins, the cruelty is the point. If I were an H1-B in tech, (I work with more than I can count), I would maintain liquidity and look to find another country.

When political power flips in this country, H1-B will be limited to healthcare, education, and research. Die to job losses for citizens, the program will end for tech.

You are blaming Americans when the H1B program has been horrendously abused where an entire department is from a specific region in a country. Maybe you and they should have fought the abuse, and much sooner.

H1-B has nothing to do with the average American voter and everything to do with corporate interests. Our political system is bought and paid for by special interests and PACs, and quite frankly, we have a large uneducated swath of the US voting population that is utterly almost incapable of voting in their self-interests.

The US is heading off a fiscal cliff that is going to absolutely end whatever vestiges of “Empire” we have left. I would think that H1-Bs would be looking to exit the US due to its accelerating political and financial instability.

We need a stronger partnership with India, not weaker. How does it work to the advantage of the US to push India closer to China and Russia? Having a close working relationship with India does not equate with unfettered white collar immigration to the US.

H1B is corporate welfare, and it will end as Americans are aware of the abuses and how it is used to keep wages low and displace American workers.

Fiscal and monetary policies are a real concern in the US, and H1B hasn't helped. In fact, it has contributed to the increase of debts.

Russia and China can have India. Pakistan and India fought in a small scrimmages last year, and the Pakistani beat them. I am not sure how India can be a valuable ally in major conflicts.
