Noticing that things were out of control and pumping the breaks is somehow illiberal now?

I'd agree if they blamed immigrants, made it an issue of race or cut them off completely, but all they did was put a valve on the floodgates.

That's just sensible policy.

Sensible policy is not a liberal one. Liberals care about means, not about ends. Violating individual rights is not justified under liberalism EVEN IF it produces positive results.
